Hi guys! I submitted R2 on 01/13 and received the e-mail with the check status information Friday 01/21.

I have a doubt about the "Initial notification date" (April 1). Does this mean that we are not supposed to hear anything until that date (and still have chances of acceptance), or accepted applicants must hear before that date?

No it means that is NYU's deadline to give you some kind of feedback. They could very well contact you before then with an interview invite, a waitlist response or a ding. However, April 1st is the date by when you'll definitely hear back with one of these responses.

No you will not. The point is to be expressive and also creative, which does not only apply to the medium by which you present your story. In fact, at one of the admissions events I went to they said that some of their BEST Essay #3's have been essays

I heard the same at one of my events. If it's the medium you are most comfortable in, then I would definitely recommend going for it.
