I got my letter too today. Got awarded $25K for the first year. I don't mean to brag, but is that a lot? Because it's making NYU very tempting when I had already decided on Columbia...I know, I am very lucky.

Columbia: $53,208/yr
NYU: $47,956/yr

$5252(or $10,504 over two years) difference. Factor in the $25k, and you're saving $35,504. Not exactly chump change. These two schools are equally ranked, and probably offer the same job prospects. I would choose NYU hands down. Better facilities, better location (I love the west village), same ranking, same job prospects (assuming you're not doing something really niche), and you save $35k (which is like $500/mo for almost 6 years not including interest).

As someone who completed a competitive grad degree program at an ivy league school, the novelty of ivy wears off *very* quickly (like day 2). It's not like you're option is Columbia or Podunk U. I completely understand the pull of blatant prestige, but I would take the money and run...debt aint no joke. Just my two cents :)

*No idea if 25k is a lot. Seems like a tier 2 (out of 3) offer. Tier 1 being full ride, tier 3 being 5-10k.

What are your career goals and where do you want to live? If you want to live in NYC then NYU will open just as many doors. Outside NYC I would give the edge to Columbia.

Kind of hard for others to answer without knowing your financial situation. Look at it this way though-- it is essentially worth $500 a month over 2 years at school. You could either substantially change your QOL or substantially reduce your debt. It's not insignificant!

Did you apply to columbia in the ED round cause if so personally I think you are obligated to go to Columbia from a moral standpoint. Other question is what career path are you choosing and what company are you looking to work for? Do they recruit at both?
