Hi All- I'm wondering, do you think it is worth applying for round 3 or am I better off waiting for ED next year (i.e. would applying now actually be detrimental to my chances if I get dinged and then reapply in a few months)? Also, anyone know approximate % of class that gets selected from round 3? Thanks guys.
NYU doesn't have ED, their R1 deadline is historically around Nov. 15th.
There has been a fair amount of discussion about applying R3 in general recently, and the myths surrounding it. Interestingly, most of it seems to be initiated by admissions consultants, who, lo and behold, are happy to help you out with your R3 app for a fee.
I went through this process last year. I put in a last minute R3 app to CBS and (predictably) was dinged. Then I applied ED 3 months later and had an awfully tough time explaining how my candidacy had improved beyond "I'm applying in an easier round." (I didn't actually say that, but that's the truth.) I'm not saying that I would have got in if I didn't have the prior app hanging over me, but I think my chances were close to nil because of it.
In this case, NYU has a later R1 deadline than most, so you have a little more time to supposedly grow as a candidate. The question is, do you foresee having credible personal and professional development in the next 8 months that you can write about in a reapp essay in case the R3 app doesn't work out? If so, and if you have a good explanation for why you're applying R3 to write in your optional essay, then sure, go for it.
I don't think anyone knows the % of the class admitted in R3 other than the adcom, and they aren't saying. If I was to guess I'd say 10-15%, but that's pure speculation.
