I went to an info session yesterday at Stern and got some good info. They said that about 60-70% of those that get interviewed, get accepted. Those are pretty good odds. Yall may have known this already but I figured I would share it anyway since i think it is pretty positive - at least for all the interviewees out there. :)

Mine says: "If your application is incomplete, you will be informed via email and this Application Status Check Website. Please be sure to complete your application in order for the Admissions Committee to begin its review."

How does that compare to yours?
Mine was incomplete and said "Although there are items missing from your application, it is currently before the Committee and is being evaluated. Please submit any missing items as soon as possible" even though they received my official GMAT scores on 1/31.

I e-mailed them a couple days ago to ask why it still says that and they responded saying that my official GMAT score has been included in my application. My status now says:

Thank you for applying to NYU Stern. We have received your application and it is being presented to the Admissions Committee for review. You will receive initial notification on or before the notification dates indicated below.

If your application is incomplete, you will be informed via email and this Application Status Check Website. Please be sure to complete your application in order for the Admissions Committee to begin its review.

I am also international from London and still waiting :( Not sure if there is anything planned for here, but have not yet heard anything. In any case, I have read other places through the forum, and I think that they would still call you for an interview if they wanted to even after the India local interviews. that's just my thought..maybe wrong?

Also, many NYC buildings have ridiculous requirements when applying for apartments. If you are traveling in from out of town, I would suggest having the following when possible:

- Prior year's tax return and primary W-2
- Bank statements showing current balances
- A reference letter from your current/prior landlord (Can be very simple, just stating that you paid your rent on time and were a good tenant.)
- 1-1.5 times monthly rent for security deposit, plus a few hundred dollars for rental applications/credit check fees
- A cosignor

The last point can be tricky. Generally, buildings require you to have 48 times monthly rent in AGI. Most will allow you and your spouse/roommate to combine your income to meet that requirement. If you don't have that (we're students now), you can have a cosignor, but you and the cosignor will have to have 96 times monthly rent in AGI. Many buildings won't allow out of state cosignors or will only allow NY/NJ/CT cosignors.

Don't worry too much about any of these requirements, as they vary by building/management company. It's just helpful to know these things in advance so you can discuss them with the broker/management company before wasting your time looking at specific properties. Also, it helps having all of the paperwork and money squared away if you are coming here for 3 days and want to sign a lease.

Most NYC apartments aren't leased more than 4-6 weeks in advance of move in, so you can either come a little before school starts and find a place to move into within 1-2 weeks or you can come over the summer to look.

Be sure to ask if they offer 2 year leases, so you can get a month or 2 thrown in for free or a reduced security deposit. That can really drive the price down.

Sorry for the length, just trying to be comprehensive.

I 100% agree with this. The requirements can be ridiculous. Be prepared to have a co-signer if you don't meet all the requirements. My co-signer was from CA, but thankfully he was accepted (when I lived in NYC)

It might be a pain to get to class, but I have a feeling that it's probably easier to rent outside of manhattan so don't freak out if you feel like you might not meet all these requirements.

Geez, for the people that actually plan to rent in Manhattan while attending NYU, how big of a loan are you planning to take out? 150-200K over 2 years?

I plan to, yet haven't crunched the numbers yet. Is that what it'll amount to? Darn. I will be splitting rent on a one-bedroom with my boyfriend so that should help, but still! Anyone else plan to and have calculated the loan needed?

Oh yeah, unless you are financing some of it yourself, you will hit 150K easy with conservative living expenses. After taxes, the average placement salary probably drops down to $70k/yr. This is starting to sound like indentured servitude.

Yea one of the big things that worries me is paying for living expenses while in New York. I want to live in Manhattan, but the cost of living is so high I am not sure that I could justify it.

While completing a graduate degree, I've had a lot of interaction with MBA's. When they are working on group projects, late nights (10p-2a) can be normal, especially as the due date nears. The thought of having to hike back to Brooklyn from the West Village at 2a (45 min of travel at least depending on where you live) sounds awful. Almost worth the extra debt to have a small studio next to class. It would be conducive to my academic success ( and sanity)

Somehow I feel people who need until 2 in the morning to finish MBA assignments must be doing something wrong or waiting to the last minute. I've heard enough testimony that the typical week's worth of work, including classes, is around 40 hours, which for most of us will be much lighter than normal work. This isn't med school and I've never heard of anyone ever failing out. And if an extra 20k doesn't mean much to you, more power to you.

Completely a personal decision, but part of the reason I'd be excited to attend NYU/Columbia is to experience living in Manhattan. So I'd definitely choose to live close to campus. But, I'd also be sharing a one bedroom or studio with my boyfriend, so rent will be a tad bit easier.

I don't think you are talking about a $20K difference, depending on how far away from Manhattan you are planning on going. The most you would probably save is less than $9600 ($400/month) by living in Brooklyn or Hoboken. Factoring in transit/cab costs and it will be a lot less than that. If you aren't going home at 2am because of school work, you will be going home between 2am-4am because you are going out after class/group meetings or on the weekend. Having lived here for 6 years, I can vouch that there isn't much worse than having to wait 30 minutes for a subway and taking the subway another 30-45 minutes home at 3am. If you opt to take a cab out of Manhattan, prepare to spend $20-$30 per ride.

I think this is a personal preference and there is no doubt you will save some money by living outside of Manhattan. You just have to weigh that against wanting to experience life in Manhattan and the convenience of being close to home whether you are coming from class, a bar or a restaurant. Since the cost of an MBA is so high anyway, I don't think anyone is crazy for spending an extra $5-8K for convenience over 2 years. I also know that when I moved here as a non-native New Yorker, I wanted the quintessential NYC experience and I think you get that by living in Manhattan more so than the other boroughs.

Again, this all about preference and to each his/her own.

I think the convenience, whether due to group projects OR just hanging out with classmates, is worth the money to live in Manhattan. Now if I can just convince my boyfriend..

Having already experienced the late night treks back to Brooklyn (as much as I love Brooklyn), it will get annoying. This will be the case no matter what borough you choose to live in, even NJ. I wouldn't want the annoyance of a commute to affect my MBA experience in ANY way.

For those already admitted to NYU, what's the deposit and when is it due?

The deposit is $2K and it's due on 4/25. Admitted student weekend is 4/15-4/17, so you can attend that before making your decision.

and Furthermore $70k in NYC is pennies... Doable but not fun... Trust me.. I read an article a while back saying that to be considered "middle class" in nyc one must make around $125k. Now "middle class" is different for different people but that's what the article said lol...
