Please correct the round 1 deadline. I think it's Oct 10th or 11th.

Corrected R1 deadline. Thanks, mreevit.

I'm interested in cleantech and sustainability, but I'm not interested in spending an extra year for the Erb Institute program.

Would this hurt my chances with Ross?

This is a great question, and I wanted to take some time to answer this. First, I want to make the disclaimer that I am not in the Erb program - I'm only in Ross - so take what I say with a grain of salt.

When I was applying, I did check out the Erb dual degree program; however, the three-year duration was the deciding factor for me in my decision not to pursue this option. Did it hurt my chances? I don't know, but I'd like to think not, since I did get in. During my on-campus interview, I was indeed asked this question - if I'm interested in cleantech/sustainability, why did I not apply to Erb? My answer was honest. I already have a Master's degree in engineering, so I didn't really feel that a dual degree would offer that much value to me, even though I wanted to pursue something in that sector.

That said, if you have a year to spare, and you don't already have an advanced degree, Erb could be an excellent option for you if you want to go into sustainability. The SNRE program (dual degree with Erb) is ranked top 3 in the country, so you will be in excellent company. If you decide to spend your first year in SNRE - you have the option to start with SNRE or Ross - you would still be able to establish ties with the Ross community. From what I've heard, the Erbbies - obviously, they don't like that nickname so I would recommend saying it as often as you can - are really passionate about what they do, so you would definitely be in great company - and a tightly-knit community - if you decide to pursue this option. The Erbbies that I've met have been smart, motivated, and nice people who are a lot of fun.

I'm probably not the best person to talk about the Erb program, since I'm not in it, but I would be happy to put you in touch with someone who is, if you are interested.

Best of luck!

When I met with an admissions officer from Ross last weekend she suggested that Erb candidates start with Erb so they can learn lessons from their Ross buddies before their first year. This way they can maximize their Ross experience and participate in more of the programs that they otherwise wouldn't have known about.

I won't be applying for Erb, but peaceyall (a current Erb student) would probably point the prospective students in the right direction.

Hi all,

I'm considering applying fall 2011 . I have seen on Ross website that only 20 students went on exchange abroad this year. This is a few comparing to other MBA programs... Are the international exchanges not appealing to Ross students? Or are they very selective?

Thanks!

Thats a good point, even I am interested in doing a study abroad if I get in. From what I've heard, usually the students go study abroad in second year and you have to let the university know much in advance...which leads to lot of students not signing up coz they are still waiting to get their internships lined up and don't want to be away from campus in case the internship doesn't work out.
Would like to read some current students' opinions on this.

I'm an incoming student at Ross this fall, and here is how I view it. Personally, I'm not considering the study abroad program for a few reasons. First, I want to work in the US immediately upon graduation, so there is no significant incentive for me to participate in the program. Secondly, if you do study abroad, then you will be giving up part of the 2 years - and part of the network - here at Ross. So it really comes down to what matters more to you based on your background and future goals. That said, I'd like to think the main reason is b/c once people come to Ann Arbor, they fall in love with Ross and the city and never want to leave.

Anyway, that's just my $0.02. I haven't met anyone yet who's expressed an interest in the study abroad program, or at least the conversation hasn't come up yet. So the anecdotal evidence does seem to support your perception. That said, there're a ton of people who are interested in international business, myself included, and there is a sizable and diverse international student population here. For what it's worth, I really love the people here, and classes haven't even officially started yet!

Best of luck!

What Milas said is pretty true. The majority of the exchange programs are for the second semester of your second year so you miss out on the last chance to hang out with all your classmates together. Also, there are other opportunities to for international experiences without giving that up. For example: MAP, there is a two week course in Germany over the summer, I did a marketing in Russia class and went to Russia over spring break (2nd yr)....you get the idea. I simply didn't want to be away from A2 at the end of my two years and already felt I'd had plenty of opportunities to travel internationally.

Some people I know wanted to do the exchange because they wanted to work in that city post-graduation and took advantage of being there to network and/or interview for jobs. Selectivity depends on the school. London Business School would be one of the more selective programs for example. For the most part people get their top choice though. Also, if you are an international student make sure you apply for the required VISA etc far enough in advance. I know someone who almost didn't get to go because of a VISA holdup.....

and the application is open as of today! Good luck all!

One quick question: is there a reason why Michigan Ross is not interested in knowing the MBA applicant's extracurricular activities/honors? I was working on the application and when I got to that section, it indicated the section designed specially for some other Michigan programs, but not for MBA. I haven't really delve too deep into the application, so maybe this is asked of the MBA applicant somewhere else...if that's the case, sorry for the rhetoric question.

Not sure why it's not showing up in the application, but Ross admissions is definitely interested in your extracurriculars. When I applied, I'm pretty sure I had to put that in my application somewhere, in addition to what I wrote in the essays. Good luck!

that's what I would imagine as well. I guess I'll keep working on the application and see if it's hidden somewhere...

I'm excited to apply to Ross -- unfortunately I probably won't get to visit before applying. I need to sell my spouse on Ann Arbor but it might have to wait until admit weekend -- yes, I'm visualizing success already!

hmm, after working some more on the application, I still can't find the page where it asks for extracurricular activities. I just can't really fathom the idea of a b-school not wanting to know what its applicants do outside of work. Can anyone help with some clarification? This is for the MBA application, not anything else.
