Is there a disadvantage to applying R2 vs. R1? I've heard different opinions on this, but still not sure if I should try and make R1 or submit in R2 with my other apps. Any thoughts?

we can make conjectures about differences in R1 (more "prepared/organized candidates, etc" v R2 ("more competitive candidates, etc") but these factors probably vary considerably from year to year and there is absolutely nothing you can do to control competition or admissions. so my take is this - control yourself. with the exception of R3 (very limited seating left), you should submit in the round where you personally think your application is the strongest. i originally intended on preparing a R1 submission, but I did not feel my candidacy was at its absolute best and so i made some adjustments and deferred to R2.

so far i have only seen one plus of being admitted to the gsb earlier - you have a slightly higher probability of getting housed in schwab (the all grad business housing building on campus) since they dont prorate availability by round. but thats certainly not worth a premature push for R1.

Thanks for the reply. Count me in for R2

I'm faced with a similar dilemma of R1 vs R2.

Interestingly, this is what Stanford has to say about it..

"We offer 3 application rounds.
Within each round, we encourage you to submit your application as early as possible.
If you are considering applying in either Round 1 or Round 2, we strongly encourage you to consider Round 1. Over the past few years, we've noticed more applicants applying in Round 2 and, as a result, this round has become bigger and a bit more competitive. You should never rush your application. But, on the margin, earlier is better."

Any thoughts guys?

Planning to apply in R1 this year. Considering a very low admit rate, I have always been scared to apply from last two years but then felt that it might be worth taking a chance!

One month is way too little for you to be able to give anything a good shot. I'd recommend applying to R2. The GMAT Preparation takes at least two to three weeks if you diligently work at it. Then there's essays, recommendations and so on. Don't rush and put in a half-hearted effort :)

No idea specifically, but I think as an outlier applicant, you might want to bring up your GMAT score. Given your approximate age you should make sure you have all your bases covered before you apply. :)

Program: MBA FT
Area of interest in MBA: Finance
GMAT: 770 51Q/47V (I think?), 6.0 AWA
GPA: 3.8, Physics/Economics, Ivy, High Honors
Work experience: 2 years at IB (GS/MS), 2 years at MegaCap PE (worked in both Europe and the U.S., lots of HBS alumni), interned at M/B/B, board observer for a couple of our portfolio companies
Nationality: Asian
Age: 25 at matriculation
Gender: M
Languages: English
ECs: Kind of weak here. Couple of club presidencies in college, editorships at some newspapers, some involvement with tutoring etc, worked on a 5-6 different on-campus jobs, a ton of econ/finance research, thesis in Physics, study abroad in central Europe (do these count?), worked with a charity for a 7-8 months (nothing too great though). To be honest, work schedule is so brutal that I can't find time outside of work at all.... but I have some good work-related stuff though. Like, I am fairly active on our Company boards, interact with the CEO a lot etc. But I think that's common for PE applicants.

I think I can write some interesting essays (lots of travel, interesting experiences while working on campus in several different jobs etc.)
