Well, personally, I was pretty wrapped up in studying for the GMAT until my test day five days ago- I did some brainstorming on the "What matters most" question before my test, but now that it's over and I'm able to focus on apps, I've decided to push back Stanford to round two. I just don't think I'll have good answers for Stanford's essays in time for round one.

Congratulations on the 740 - well done!

For question 3b :
* Option B: Tell us about a time when you made a lasting impact on your organization.

What do they mean by my organization? I actually consulted for a friend's company for a year and had worked on the prime product of the company. It actually resulted in helping them to expand in other countries and open channels for growth. I was wondering whether I can use that as an example here.

Please share your thoughts on this.

I think you can definitely write about that. Organization probably refers to any group or company that you were a part of/contributed to. This seems to fit the bill. If you're plagued by doubt, it never hurts to shoot the adcoms an email through their website :)

I'll be submitting any day now, I guess. I just need my 3rd recommender to submit and I'll have everything ready to go :)

I'm not nervous about any of the schools yet. I guess I'm just relieved to have finished my essays. We can worry when interview invites start going out!

Hey guys, has anyone applied for R1? Do share your experience of the application process and any tips you can give.
Lets make this thread active and useful, right now it looks dead.

Do we have any current Standford student here?

Hey all, Applying R1. Just finished with what I think is my final draft of the essays. All I can say is wow, what an excruciating process, but I'm glad I had my significant other with me to help me think through the "what matters to me" essay and re-write it like a bajillion times.

My issue now is.. I'm at 1910 words, and I'm having a really tough time cutting it down! I know I've heard in general that +5-10% is fine, but not from any truly reputable source. Also, Stanford appears to be a little more strict on the word count with their phrasing:

"Your answers for all of the essay questions cannot exceed 1,800 words.

You have your own story to tell, so please allocate the 1,800 words among all of the essays in the way that is most effective for you. We provide some guidelines below as a starting point, but you should feel comfortable to write as much or as little as you like on any essay question, as long as you do not exceed 1,800 words total."

Anyone have any insight on this? Should I take the knife to the last 100 words even if I think I might be weaking the overall product slightly?

Yes. I'm sure there are people who got in going over, but they make a point of the word limit being STRICT.

Generally speaking, 5-10% on an essay is acceptable. I think the fact that Stanford gives you the freedom to spend your 1800 words however you wish implies that they expect you to stay under 1800. 110 words is no insignificant challenge. I'd read over the essays again and scrap anything that isn't absolutely essential, then give it a read-through and see if you lost anything important.

I got all my essays to be EXACTLY 1800 :P (with the help of my editor, I managed to cut it from 2200, to 1900, down to exactly 1800).

I felt good last week, but now I'm going through some minor fixes/changes and my count is now totally off. I guess I can live with a word count of 1805 or something. :x

Almost done w/ this app. Will be submitting this sucka within the next 2 days! Good luck everyone

Guys, this question might come as a very stupid one to some here but still let me know...

How important/necessary it is to get your essays reviewed? (Though I have not even started writing one)
Also, can anyone share a good resource to consult on how one should approach writing these essays along with some example essays?

I would feel much better though knowing that someone here did get in and went over the word limit (and by how much).

I'd say "it depends" on how important it is to get it professionally reviewed. Some people will likely gain a lot from the process, some not as much. But it is vitally important to get SOMEONE to review your essays. At the very least, you need someone who isn't familiar with what you've done, and what you're writing to read it over and tell you whether it flows well and makes sense. Obviously, it's also good to have someone to look out for grammar errors and the like.

As for resources, there are a lot out there, but this one talks about the most common essays and how to approach them. I don't think theirs is the ONLY way to do it, but it is one that can get you started.

Woot! Down to 1830 words... almost there!

I'm still dying to know if anyone has been invited to interview and was above the 1800 word limit.
