smartperson - you have impressive stats. I'm sure you are a lock at HBS/Stanford in R2. Do you know why you were dinged at Sloan? That doesn't seem right to me with your stats.

Thanks! Just like I don't put much stock in the school rankings, I don't think the 'stats' matter that much in the admissions process for MBA - they just have to be 'good enough' to not raise any warning flags. Business school is all about the heart :)

Who knows why I didn't get in? Even if you look on this forum some great guys were dinged from Sloan in round 1 but were accepted to H, S, and K.

If I compare the essays that I wrote in round 1 for Sloan to the ones that I wrote for H and S in R2, I feel like there is a difference in quality. Maybe that was it, or maybe it was something else...

Hi everyone, new to the forum.
Still no news from the admission office? it's already Jan 21st... this time last year earliest invites have been sent out!

My status is still "submitted".

There is a lot that goes into admissions besides just numbers. I know people dinged from H/S and even Sloan with the sames stats so you can't say JUST because of numbers, someone will get into a top 10 business school. I think it has more to do with your package, what you can contribute and how you tell your stories (essays)--the numbers only get your foot in the door. Beyond that, it's a combination of a crap shoot and how well you put your application together.

Good luck everyone!

I'm in your same shoes, smartperson (tho clearly with a slightly lower GMAT). I agree that my R2 essays were MUCH better than my Sloan essays.

It's good to see other people approaching this process with the sense of realism that is too easy for us to forget.

I think part of being human is our desire to quantify and measure everything. We often cling to factors like GMAT scores, GPA, age, years of work experience, admit rate, yield rate, etc.

In the end I believe that business school, more specifically business school admissions, is much more about your emotional intelligence, which is essentially impossible to measure. This explains why the essay questions they ask feel so funky/difficult. Compare this to your undergrad application experience: wasn't that so much easier? I think it's because colleges know that 18-year-olds don't know anything about the world or themselves...

Read somewhere that the average GMAT score among HBS applicants is >700 and would assume the same is true of GSB. Seen in that light, the fact that the mean/median matriculation scores are only ~720 starts to drive home how little say the score has at the end of the day.

Admissions411.com data on HBS/GSB outcomes shows little GPA/GMAT correlation, as well.

Any R2 applicants get interview requests yet?

When do you think they'll start sending them out?

No word any interview invites yet....... My status is still "Submitted" too! Maybe there were no rock star applicants in R2 so they are taking their time to review applicants and determine who to interview. The person who was invited to interview on 1/20 last year was probably a rock star, like the person who was interviewed before the application deadline last year in the first round.

Now that you mention it, so true! If the average score of the applicant is > 700, then a mean of 720 among the accepted is very telling. Can you elaborate on the Admissions411 and GPA stats?

Admit rates based on previous two years' Admissions411 profiles, normalized to the actual overall admit rate. Thresholds represent approximate quartiles of the sample, with n=184 for GSB and n=255 for HBS.

GMAT GSB HBS
<700 5% 7%
-725 5% 11%
-750 9% 13%
750+ 8% 13%
Avg 7% 12%

GPA GSB HBS
<3.4 5% 5%
-3.6 3% 10%
-3.8 7% 16%
3.8+ 12% 16%
Avg 7% 12%

If you normalize GSB to match the overall HBS admit rate, then average the two rates for each category, you get the following, where Q1 corresponds to <700 GMAT or <3.4 GPA.

GSB/HBS GMAT GPA
Q1 8% 7%
Q2 10% 7%
Q3 14% 14%
Q4 13% 18%

So 725+ GMAT or 3.6+ GPA seems to matter but subsequent gains appear minimal. Ironic that presence on this forum is probably more indicative, even after accounting for response bias.

There is a sentence under my application status that says "Your application is complete and currently under review." Looks like this happened around 1/20 last year for everyone. Maybe interview requests will go out this week....... thoughts?

Roundel, I'm sure the first person here that gets an interview will post a message. Try not to stress out about it so much...go check out a book from your library or join a gym. You'll feel a lot better than sitting here pressing refresh (not to mention you'll be stressing us out less at the same time).

Yep, I have that status too, now. If last year is any indication, then that means that interviews will start trickling out this week.
