Hello, my name is Joseph Kao and I’m one of the admits in the MSx Class of 2024 at Stanford GSB (took the GRE and got Round 1 admission). I received my Ph.D. in Materials Science from UC Berkeley around 9 years ago and I’ve been in the tech companies such as Apple and Facebook developing optical materials for AR/VR hardwares. During MSx, I plan to pursue entrepreneurship to found a startup developing new material technologies to accelerate lithium ion battery circularity. I’m here to share my experience applying to Stanford GSB or 1-year MBA programs in general as it’s not an easy journey, especially for the applicants with more than 6-7 years of work experiences. Hope it helps. If I don’t get to answer your questions, feel free to contact me at [email protected]
Thanks Joseph for sharing your experience! I’m Dan who’s been doing data analytics in Tech companies for the past 3-4 years. I’m interested in applying GBS for 2024 school year : )

Hello! Hope you are well. My question is, for someone who is applying right after their undergrad or around a year later (and not looking for a deferred program), but has around 2-3 years of full time paid work experience with startups, does Stanford count it as relevant work experience, and does this have an effect on their overall application or chances at a scholarship? Also, would to connect on LinkedIn. My profile is: https://www.linkedin.com/in/kainat-nazir-4b4b661ba/

I’m actually quite interested in my current career path providing analytics solutions to Tech products. I’m looking to learning more about leadership&management skills when I’m advancing in this role, and further opportunities to co-found my own data analytics companies

Yes. The adcom will consider your experience towards the "work experience". So you should be good to apply. One thing to note is that GSB doesn’t give merit-based scholarship. It’s need based

and it’d be great to also emphasize on your motivation to found a data analytics companies and tie it to GSB’s ethos (change lives, change organizations, change the world).

Hello Joseph. Love to hear more about the potential options in a full time MBA!
I personally think that the opportunity cost is too high to do a 2-year full time MBA as a mid career professional. So I focused on the 1-year MBA and the sloan fellow masters programs. I applied to INSEAD, Kellogg 1-year, MIT Sloan Fellows MBA, and Stanford MSx

Does GSB put a lot of emphasis on entrepreneurship when reviewing the applicant’s package? I mean, do they prefer candidates with entrepreneurship after-MBA goals more than other goals?

I actually think they do. And I’ve got the same feedback from the MBA/MSx students that I’ve met so far

You don’t need to become an entrepreneur post GSB and the success rate for GSBers to be an entrepreneur is <15% right after GSB. But it’s good to show your entrepreneurial spirits through your work experience and express your open mindedness in entrepreneurship to create high impacts

Thank you! Yes I think this definitely makes sense.
