I mentioned my timeline in the above post.

Regarding the interview, I got an email on 8th September from an admissions committee member for a face to face interview at Mumbai with him on 21st September. The interview was very straightforward, no curveballs or difficult questions. He asked me around 7-8 questions regarding my career path, Why Columbia, post-MBA goals, what I do for fun, etc. The admissions committee guy was very professional and straightforward. The interview lasted around 40 minutes.

Hey Ani,

I received an interview invite from Columbia Business School, and with it was a link which assigned me to an alumni in Mumbai. They gave me the alum’s email and asked me to contact her and schedule and interview. You mentioned that the alumni directly contacted you? Any idea about these different approaches for interviews?

Actually, I just realised the Mumbai Infosession was on 21st September so guessing that’s why he contacted you directly.

I was contacted by an admissions committee member, not an alum. It was quite strange because Columbia generally has alumni conduct interviews for them.

Not really, they have infosessions in September every year and so when the committee is down in India, they also interview people at the same time. Anyway, any tips for the interview? :)

I would say develop personal answers for all the common MBA interview questions and try practicing them in front of a mirror or with a friend. Ask the other person to notice if you speak like you usually do or are you stiffening up/sounding overly formal. I noticed that I was using 'Umm' a lot more than I usually do when I was practicing my questions. Other than that, I have no experience interviewing with alumni, so I don't have any comments regarding that. Maybe the interview might become more conversational in your case, but mine was very to the point and concise. All the best! PM me if you need any help.

Congrats! I have not heard that J-Term applicants have a higher acceptance rate post-interview. Is that what you mean? Or are you saying that most J-Term applicants receive an interview invite?
