Have all interview calls for the first video interview been sent out already for Round 2. I applied R2 and haven't heard a peep yet. Wondering if I am out of the running!!!

I believe in a previous chat with Foster admissions, they may grant interviews up to the decision date.

This might not be the answer you were looking for, but I don't think anyone here knows definitively until decisions are sent.

Good luck, everyone!

Great post Wibble!

Would you mind sharing the reason behind applying to both full-time and part-time programs at the same time? Which would be your first choice :) ?

The full answer is a bit complicated, and I would suspect we all have different reasons why we apply to one school or another, but the short-answer is that I was born, raised, and currently live in Seattle and intend to remain here post-MBA. So UW makes the most sense from a regional standpoint in terms of opportunity, MBA brand, and the cost (in-state). Applying to both programs essentially gives me two chances to get in. Another reason is that our industry (game development) is so volatile that I cannot honestly tell you what my career situation is in early 2015 when I would theoretically have to make a choice between both.

I was an undergraduate at the UW School of Business (before it was renamed to Foster) from 1998 to 2002. I was also doing a double-degree in mathematics (I suppose out of sheer interest and stubbornness). During time as an undergraduate, though, I started my own video game retail business as a freshman and basically spent 100% of my time either studying for class or running my business. I never made room for the social interactions (which didn't seem all that important to me when I was 18) or even the usual interpersonal development growth that most college kids went through. Back then, I approached school as purely academic in order to gain knowledge and I foreclosed most of my social options there.

Fast forward 16 years later and I realized that I really did miss out on much more than I realized. The social development and engagement I missed out on could have made me a better speaker, communicator, and projector. No regrets though. After all, there is only 24 hours in a day and I was living a lifestyle that essentially required 30+.

For this reason, if I were admitted to the FT program, I would likely attend that. The social interaction and opportunities to change job functions and/or careers are enormous. As a PT student, however, my focus would be less on interpersonal development and more on academic training. The advantage there is that I keep my professional tenure, and the ROI if you consider opportunity costs makes the PT program the most sense. But as they say, we all have to pay our dues. I didn't years ago, and on a personal level I feel that I need the FT experience to really make a change.

Professionally, I actually want to remain in my industry (game development) but move into more of a business planning role rather than product execution. Both FT and PT programs will likely accomplish this transition, but the FT program allows me to fully engage in several entrepreneurial endeavors I've always wanted to do that would have been much harder to do in the PT setting. My reasons for the MBA isn't so much about salary or role seniority. It's about having choices and the freedom to do what you want, when you want it, and set the conditions of success on my terms.

Therefore, if I actually were admitted to both programs and had the awesome "problem" of choosing either, I would likely take the FT program.

Hi Wibble, How is the reputation of foster in Seattle area....You live there, so believe you will have good idea about its reputation and acceptance among employers...

Hi Wibble, How is the reputation of foster in Seattle area....You live there, so believe you will have good idea about its reputation and acceptance among employers...

Disclaimer: Since I'm an UW alum, it's hard to be 100% objective, but I will speak as someone who has been a hiring manager in one of the companies listed below.

Without a doubt, it is the #1 business school in the entire Northwest region of the US. The University of Washington is a big school and has the strongest reputation in the Seattle area, and by extension, the West Coast. The UW name / brand becomes less impactful as you leave the region (for example, anywhere in the East Coast) where the Ivy League (and "Ivy Plus", of which UW is actually a part of) tends to attract more attention.

At your blue-chip companies like Microsoft, Amazon, Starbucks, Costco, Nordstrom, Paccar, and Boeing, UW students make the largest contingent in numbers. The Foster program, however, is actually very tiny compared to the greater UW (with only ~100 admitted per year; compare that to ~6,500 incoming undergraduates). In my opinion, this is an understated strength. It has most of the benefits of "strength in numbers" by extension of the greater university, yet small and selective that each student doesn't feel like a cog in a giant cohort horde.

As you may know, other top-ranked schools have perceived stereotypical strengths (e.g. Kellogg = "teamwork"; HBS = "leadership"; Wharton = "finance"; MIT = "tech", etc.), it's also important to know that the reputation comes from having a large contingent in a particular industry or sector. (side note: the reality is that any of the top-30 schools are strong across the board and the stereotypes are not all that true in the real world).

Because Foster's MBA program is very small, it doesn't have a typical perceived strength stereotype, good or bad. If there is a reputation among employers, however, Foster students are perceived as very collegial, humble, and strongly well-rounded with a flair in entrepreneurship (due to the # of startups here). Foster, whether true or not, has a reputation of being more "techy" than other programs because of Amazon/Microsoft/Boeing and more "international" due to Seattle being a major hub for Asian trade. Beyond the stereotypes, however, any MBA program is what you make of it.

What Foster is not generally known for are high-finance or top-3 consulting, although none of these are absolutes and there seems to be a couple each year who find their way to BCG or McK. It's more of a consequence of a smaller program than anything else, IMO. Larger programs simply have more alumni elsewhere in the country.

It's also important to put UW it in a larger context. UW is regionally the top school, private or public, in various categories. Specifically:
* Computer Science / Computer Engineering / Electrical Engineering
* Nursing
* Medicine
* Biotech Research
* Business
* Law
* Forestry Services (debatable between UW vs. OSU)

As you go out nationally, UW has been consistently in the top-30 (and in some cases top-10) across the board with some topping in niche categories (#1 for Nursing, #1 for Primary Care Physicians, #1 for Forestry Engineering). For business and engineering, you'd have to go as far south to Berkeley / Stanford / UCLA to have competition from a regional recognition basis. As they say, strength in numbers, and UW is probably the most recognized in the Greater Seattle region. My $0.02.

R1 decisions don't get released until the 15th. However, getting the interview is half the battle. I would bet the acceptance rate for people with interviews is (at least) 50%.

I interviewed in Seattle last week. It required last minute air travel, but it was worth it to see the campus in person. I met with several MBA resource offices and current students. My interview was with assistant dean Dan Poston, and it felt very relaxed and informative. He knew my application front and back, and he had many questions asking me to go into detail. Overall, it was a great impression of the program and I'm even more anxious to hear the final decision - even though it won't come until January!

Had my interview yesterday with Sarah. It lasted close to an hour and was extremely conversational. My biggest draw factor for Foster is Seattle, and she's reaffirmed my beliefs. she had read up on my essays and resume and brought up names by herself. The interview was very pleasant. I really do hop I get in at Foster. He's the question debrief for those who are yet to take up their interview.

1.what do you do for fun
2.why did you choose your undergrad college
3.i'm sure you're looking at other colleges, so what criteria do you use to pick a program
4.can you describe a typical day at work
5.how do you see yourself contributing to the Foster community

I interviewed (face-to-face) a couple of weeks ago on campus with an Admissions Officer - sorry this post is so delayed. It was extremely conversational, much more so than either my Kellogg or McCombs interviews. She was very familiar with my resume, essays, etc., so we were able to skip over a lot of the "walk me through your resume" type of questions. We did not spend any time discussing my essays or resume specifically. My interview lasted 50 minutes, but most of that was simply chatting, and not just me talking. There were a few typical interview questions thrown in there, and here are the ones I remember:

Describe a time when you received constructive criticism. How did you respond? What change resulted from it?
What is the best compliment you've received from a superior?
What are you most excited about at Foster?
Why grad school? Why now?

I actually enjoyed my Foster interview. It seems like they use the face-to-face interview as a way to both get to know you and tell you about their program. Only 2 weeks until R1 decision deadline!!! Good luck, everyone!

Hi

Thanks for the reply.

I have some follow up queries as this si going to be first MBA interview ever.

Was the mood of the interview? Formal? or like how u talk to ur boss ? Or very casual where one can use words like 'Kickass' ,'Awesome' etc.?

What follow up questions did u ask ?

Is it okay if one has tea/water during the conversation ? Or is it strictly no drinks during interview kind of conversation you had ? Forgivr if it feels stupid. :|

The mood was informal, but with any interview I would recommend staying as professional as possible - avoid words like "kickass," wear a suit, etc.

I didn't have many follow up questions because I had attended an information session the evening before my interview and had asked questions there. I recommend coming up with a couple of real questions about the program, though. Even though I didn't have any specific questions about the program, I asked her what she thought was unique about Foster vs other schools and what drew her to the program in the first place. I've also asked interviewers what they like best about a certain program or what surprised them the most.

I think tea/water is absolutely fine.

thanks for the tips.
I have a couple more queries.
How many questions were you asked by the adcom ? Did you give any answers that were short (1-2 sentences)? Do I have to expand and add meat to every answer that I will give, even if I don't have much to answer on that particular question ? I am confused about this. :(

I don't remember how many questions I was asked, but abilash10's interview debrief reminded me of a couple of others I was asked:
What do you do for fun?
What do you think will be your greatest challenge will be while pursuing an MBA?

None of my answers were short (1-2 sentences), but I think every question they asked required an explanation, further detail, or context. Try to think of each question as an opportunity to expand on an aspect of your life. Yes, you could give one word/sentence answers (What do you do for fun? Yoga, cooking, etc.) but why not take the opportunity to explain why you love yoga or why you love cooking?

I haven't heard anything yet. Deadline is Monday and pretty good chance there will be no calls/emails over the weekend. It would not be much fun for most of us if they started making calls early. It would be brutal to have to wait all weekend when all/most the admits have been announced. Last year the deadline was over the weekend so decisions came out on Thursday I think. I would expect all decisions will come out on Monday. If you think about it, due to the small class size, they don't have to make too many admittance phone calls. But I could be wrong, maybe they'll start Thursday or Friday.

My guesstimated 50 percent acceptance rate is if you get an interview (video doesn't count), so either an interview or a video + interview.
