I may be wrong, but here's what I think:

No one is sure shot admitted until the interview....after the interviews are over, whoever they find to be utterly awkward socially and who they don't think will work well in a team or who will be succesful in a professional interview later on gets tossed...them they make some tough decisions about the rest. The try to build a balanced class with whoever is left.

I had my interview yday. The interviewer was VERY nice....she was personable, told me in advance that she would be writing and won't be able to look at me while I talked. Also, she replied to my thank you note within hours. Who knows whether I will get in, but atleast the experience was not as nerve-wracking as I had imagined it to be.

Fingers crossed till the 17th!

Had my interview yesterday. Same three behavioral questions as expected. My interviewer was very nice. She told me in advance that she would be taking a lot of notes. Now the wait begins for the 17th...

LOL, um, I wouldn't read too much into it. it sounds like a standard, polite response. I received a similar response to my thank you note. What do you expect the person to say?? I don't exactly see some hidden cryptic meaning in anything that's written there.

I think you should lay off the caffeine!! :yikes

Interview on campus yesterday. Questions were as reported, so no point in reposting.

Not that it will affect us, but I did learn that the 1st year core is likely to be revamped for the class of 2014.

One thing that my interviewer let me in on was that they're introducing more "global modules" to their classes. Essentially students take the class and then travel to a location where the class is focused on during winter/spring break to do more experiential learning.

My question is - when you ask the adcom whether interview is a make or break deal. They say "No"

When they call 800 for interview and let go 400 of those, then what basis do they make to let go 400? because all 800 are supposed to have good candidacy right? good essays, grades and workex?

Or is it that the adcom knows that the 200 out of the 800 are sure shot admits. Let's see who does well in the other 600 and lets chose the remainder 200 from that 60

If the above isnt true, then interview has to be a make or break.

Comments/Opinions???

Here is an excerpt from a recent Chicago Booth blog post:

[quote2Booth]On Tuesday, we finished the last of our admissions interviews. Applicants had the opportunity to interview with students or alumni either here in Chicago or at different locations around the world. After each interview was conducted, an interview report was submitted and added to the applicant’s file. The file then went to a member of the Admissions Committee for another review. We’ve now turned our attention to building our class. This is an exciting part of the process where we are able to craft a class of students who will bring a unique set of interests, experiences, and perspectives to Booth. We will announce our decisions on Wednesday, December 15. And, as we have done in the past, we’ll call our admitted students to welcome them to the Booth community.[/quote2]

I suspect the same process would be followed at Wharton and most other schools. While everyone who was interviewed is considered as admissible to the program based on the application merits and a small percentage of this group may be dinged solely based on a poor interview, almost everyone else will be thrown in to the mix of "building the class" and then its just a question of whether u qualify as a piece of the puzzle they're solving without any one aspect of your application (including the interview) being a "make or break" deal.

Wharton's proposition has suddenly become much more valuable, so for all of new applicants who have built DCF and Cost/Benefit analysis to make decisions about school, it is time to update and overhaul your models: Wharton has re-vamped its curriculum, and strategy. In addition to a revamped core in the full-time program, the school is starting to offer life-time business education, and cannot stress enough that executive business education for new MBA grads will be FREE.

Expect a detailed editorial exclusive on Wharton's most recent curricular innovations in Bloomberg Businessweek any time soon.

My understanding is that Wharton is transforming itself into a school with unmatched global influence. The management are pushing all the right buttons to capitalize on Wharton's obvious strengths: cutting-edge research, superb research-based teaching, and alumni community.

Anyway, the prize for the new admits has just appreciated in value.

Thanks for the update.. this is in line with an interview of the Wharton and INSEAD Deans I saw some time ago where they talked about how most other professions (law, medicine, accounting) have life long education but this was missing for MBAs. They talked about how continuing education throughout life could be one tool through which to try and prevent the decisions that led to the recent crisis. Nice to see Wharton taking this seriously.

That's really exciting. Will be interested in hearing about how they plan to implement that program and what topics it will cover. Like I needed another reason to apply to Wharton...

Are you just speculating or do you know you've been dinged? I was under the impression they weren't releasing any decisions until the 17th...

Edit: Er, sorry, I guess I assumed you had been interviewed. My mistake.
