In the job_duties section of online application the space is for ~1600 chars roughly equal to 175 words. That's much more than the job_duties anyone would have listed on a 1-page resume. How long should job duties be in online app?

I am assuming resume is 12pt font single spaced. Is that ok?

It varies from person to person, but when you say "awards", what are the typical awards people talking about? I did not go through american education system so not sure what the level of award they are talking about..Do high school awards count?

can someone help with the above question..

(1) list as much as is needed to convey what you do and what your responsibilities are. i don't think this should be a copy paste job from your resume. mine was like 700 characters.

(2) 12pt single space is fine. a quick rule of thumb is about 45-50 lines (max) for a resume.

(3) i would avoid anything from high school. awards are what they are. like graduating with honors. scholarships. recognition for outstanding performance. were you the recipient of something only a few people got? if so it probably counts.

Now that I am working on online application I have many questions popping up..

Does the employment page in online application need to filled out chronologically?
- I had an employment this year for a brief period of 3 months. Do I need to list that?
- I had 6 months of unemployment this year because I was planning a move to different state.
Is it okay only to list major employers in the given space in online app, and other can be filled out in word sheet?

I have taken both GMAT and GRE and have strong scores (90% verbal). However, my AWA score in both is 4.0 and that is pretty low.

Should I not list the GRE score, so only one 4.0 AWA would not look as bad as two 4.0 AWA?

Also: what is the work # in the employment history; these details look like too much for wharton to care about? Do applicants usually fill out these details?

Speaking of resumes...I am seeing that 1 page, single space, 12 pt font is standard. What if I go with 11.5 pt font and 0.5' margins? It all fits on a page and I have some profession creditials that I want to list, but I have already scrapped the "interest" section, so I could make the font larger.

Are adcoms really this picky?

No one will care about dropping the font size to 11 or 11.5. Margins are a bit more obvious but still fine. Upload it in PDF so would only be able to tell visually. Both are better then a second page and prob better then leaving out something important.

Poll: on the word count on the class essay, is everyone getting close to 700 words? I am looking at a 350 word essay and wondering what am I missing. Others have written that this essay is a good opportunity to show your knowledge of wharton and give insight into your passions. I am feeling like if I can't come up with 600 words on this, maybe I haven't done enough homework or have enough conviction to be a succesful applicant.

For other schools I'm not including CFA in the education section (only in my resume) as there is no associate transcript for it. However, in the Wharton application, when I lookup institutions, I actually see CFA Institute. Which makes me think they expect you to put CFA in the education section. Did anyone else do that? How did you get over the transcript issue then?

Yes I am getting close to 700 words. I did not initially but I tried to substantiate my essay with more details, and some background. I think 350 is too short for an essay they devote 700 words to. If you can't come up with 600+ words, perhaps you should think about writing another essay that would also somehow highlight the basic point you want to make in the course essay? That's just what I think..

Actually I just noticed the Awards and Certifications section which is where it would go I guess. Just surprised to see CFA Institute in the search result for schools.

Can you add more details on why you want a class on this topic, what the class would cover (specific topics that will be discussed), how will the class benefit Wharton students, and why should Wharton have such a class (how does it fit in with the school's overall curriculum and goals/strategy/culture). Even if you dedicate 150 words to each of these areas that's 600 words right there.

Guys,

I'm picking a "failure story" and have 2 options:

1). GREAT LEADERSHIP story form my military experience, but 7 years old. And I want to show with examples how this failure helped me in my career. But I worry that the story is toooo old and not professional.

2). The second is professional, 1 year old, but not very impressive. Just an average good story.

What would you suggest?

My failure story was from 2003! I think the good thing about Wharton is that with 3 essays you can really diversify your choice of stories.

Keep in mind there will be a variety of industry applicants all with their own resume flavor. If you see Wharton Grad Resume examples they will use different margins and text sizes. I changed my resume to match Wharton's style and I'm using .5 side margins and 10 pt font and it looks fine.

No nothing from my HBS app came close enough! Seriously though, I think I have ended up in a better place. Here's my outline now:
-story about how I discoverd my passion for x
-what would a study of x look like
-where would this class fit into Wharton's value chain

I am still under 700 words, but I feel a lot better about my response now.
