KidA,

You will certainly not get in if you don’t apply, but know that your chances in R3 will be smaller than they would have been in R1/R2. If you have the time to put together a quality application, you might as well give it a shot. One of my buddies got into Booth two years ago in R3 with a fairly generic but strong profile. But do hold realistic expectations and don’t be too discouraged if you hear back negatively for R3. Most of the seats will have been filled by the time they get to your application, and who knows what types of people they will be looking for to fill the few gaps left.

Your age may be a concern as you are closing in on the “now or never” window. While the rest of your profile looks reasonable, my guess is that most acceptances from R3 will either be a clear cut superstar or someone who offers a good amount of diversity. You don’t need me to tell you that there are plenty of IB types who have already applied.

Do you have any work experiences or ECs that could significantly differentiate yourself from the rest of the pool?

Hi guys-

Does anyone think it's worthwhile to apply to Wharton Rd3? I am very late to the b-school game.. I only decided this fall I wanted an MBA so everything was kind of rushed (GMAT study, applications etc) and as a result I only applied to 2 schools rd two because I didn't want to compromise the quality of the other apps.

Now I'm wondering if its simply a waste of money to apply Rd3, as I read somewhere (forget whether it was on gmat club) that last year Wharton accepted 2% of rd3 applicants?

Does anyone know about this? I would push it til next year but I will be turning 30 and really don't want to wait over a year to start an mba so I'm planning on 2011 start. My background is in finance (6 yrs at major IB), undergrad at top Ivy League school with good gpa (3.5), Econ major. I think everything in my app is pretty strong except for my gmat (680)- which is the clear weakness- As I had little time to prepare I was way off on timing on test day.. re-taking at the end of the month.

Anyhow- any advice on Rd3 and whether it's a wise move or not would be greatly appreciated. Everyone on this board seems to have a great deal of knowledge so I'd love the feedback.

Thanks so much

KidA

I'd say go for it. You seem like a strong candidate - and Wharton is sort of a dice roll for everyone anyway. Sure you're chances are probably better applying in R1 or R2 next year, but based on the info you provided it sounds like you have a compelling reason for applying in R3 (age). I'd make the decision based on what's best for your time schedule (Fall 2011 or Fall 2012), not the acceptance rates.

As far as whether or not it's worth the application fee - that probably depends on whether or not you want to go to Wharton over the schools you applied to in R2.

I had my Wharton and Lauder interviews yesterday, on campus. Here's my short recap.

Wharton - as others have already mentioned, it was 3 of the 6 behavioral questions.

Lauder - a typical conversational interview - tell me about yourself, what are your goals, why Lauder, tell me about a time you had to multi-task, and then some questions based on my international experience and my resume. We also talked a little about the research papers. It was quite relaxed and the interviewer (second year Lauder student) definitely made sure I felt at ease.

I'm interviewing next Monday, and am planning to spend the weekend in Philly. For those who have made the trip / are familiar with the area - is there a specific part of town that you'd recommend staying in? I'd like to be close to campus, but equally don't want to travel too far to access cool restaurants, museums, etc. I'm not planning to rent a car, so will have to rely entirely on public transportation. Thanks!

You can stay anywhere in Center City. I believe the Sheraton is down there. In Center City, you will be about a 7 min cab ride from Wharton and a 20 minute walk if you want to strut it. Anyplace on or near Chestnut Street, Walnut Street or Spruce Streets will be your best bet. Stay within the confines of like 19th and Walnut Street.

blind? are you asking if it's done with a blindfold on?...or through a one way mirror?...if so, it is not. if you're asking if the interviewer has reviewed your application...then the answer is also that they have not.

But that would be a good way to ramp up the intensity level very quickly!

Haha, that was not what I was asking but I agree, it would indeed be very nerve-wrecking.

I was curious because MIT is behavioral but not blind..so since the interviewer has read your application, they want examples that are outside of your essay (and preferably more recent). But for Wharton it seems you can repeat examples from your essays, since the interviewer has not read them.

I have been wondering about something similar. I know the interview is blind so the interviewer will not have read the examples in my essays. However if the interviewer is taking notes during the interview (which multiple people have reported the interviewers doing), and I tell the same story as one of my essays, wouldn't the ad com end up reading the same story once they received the interviewer's notes? It's not entirely clear to me whether the interviewer will submit all the notes to the ad com or just his/her score of the answers and perhaps a few additional comments.

I agree, that's an interesting point. I suspect that the interviewer will be sending all the notes to the adcom - otherwise, why would he/she be writing so much? In my opinion you should just go with your strongest stories. In my interview, I ended up discussing a situation that was very similar to one that I'd addressed in an essay.

If you have great stories outside of the stories from your essay, then use them. But if they overlap, I don't think its a deal breaker.

Saritalr, that's solid advice. First priority: use the most compelling story. Second priority: consider using a different story (if equally compelling) that showcases a different side of your candidacy. I think you are right in saying that if you end up discussing a similar event it is by no means a deal breaker.

I used a story from my essays for one of the questions. Its definitely not a deal-breaker!

Just had my interview and yes, the questions are the same as they were in the first round. However, just in case, make sure you can also answer the standard questions (why MBA, why Wharton).

Cheers!

All six questoins are divided into three categories. Do you guys prepare different episodes for all six questions or just one episode for each category so that you can twist little?

I'd like to know this as well. Some seem so similar!!

Yes, for some weird reason all the slots got filled up (except for tomorrow, February 23rd, at least until this morning). I called adcom and they said my only options were tomorrow on-campus, or alumni interview.

Longhorn07 and Saritalr-

Thanks for the thoughtful advice, you are both right. I suppose since its not my first choice school I don't want to put all the time in for the application (which is brutal compared to other schools) if its basically a known fact that no one gets into Wharton Rd3. As longhorn said, my background is not hugely unique for a school like Wharton- finance focused, a lot of kids from Ivys, etc. I have some decent ECs and I was a nationally ranked athlete but I don't think that will come into play given it was so many years ago. I think longhorn was right that at a school like Wharton you need to be a clear cut superstar for Rd3 and I think my disappointing gmat score is going to knock me right out of there.... There are a couple other schools I will apply to Rd 3 (where I may have a better shot) so perhaps it doesn't make sense to risk diluting the quality of those two apps at the expense of the Wharton app, when chances are so slim. I'm not sure how to best allocate my time I guess. But I need to figure that out asap.

Thanks again guys for your input.

ps. I have never felt old until I decided to go to b-school! killer.
