I am on waitlist at Wharton and in process of shifting jobs. Is it required that I let wharton know about my new status?

nath99

This sounds like something only the S2S forum could answer.

For roll call purposes, recently decided to withdraw my R1 admit to pursue other opportunities. Hope that this translates into good news later on for someone waitlisted here. Good luck to all!

I am going to Welcome Weekend. Let's meet up.

I'm not sure if it has already been discussed on this forum but here goes: I heard from at least 3 admits from 2009 about this. Around 200 admits(!) decided to defer until this year. That's an insane number, close to 25% of a matriculating class. I am quite curious as to how this affected admit/WL decisions this year.

I didn't hear an exact number, but a close friend of mine there now also said that an abnormal amount of people deferred last year. Could explain why there seems to be a strangely high # of WL's this year. When do deferrals have to confirm by? R2 matriculation date?

wooooow, i'm really surprised that adcom would allow that many deferrals :?: i don't think it could be that high. that would mean there had to be an unusually high number of people coming off the waitlist at wharton last year.

and i think the high number of WL candidates comes from them interviewing fewer people. if you're already more selective in who you interview, there's a higher chance that you like that candidate enough to give them a shot should your waitlist open up.

I thought W interview a higher pool of candidate than other schools.

in the past, they interviewed like 40-45%, this year, supposedly, they only interviewed around 30%. which to me makes sense, a waitlist as big as this year has to come from only interviewing stronger candidates - even if last year's deferrals are true, then they would still want to interview fewer people since there are fewer slots.

I also heard about a high number of deferrals from last year from a friend who volunteers at the Wharton adcom office. I was actually told the number was around 100.

I applied on the day of the deadline and have been going crazy checking my email. So i called Wharton and a super nice person called Lisa told me that they are sending out invites on a rolling basis. So presumably if you applied late you can expect a late invite. She told not to worry because they are going to send out a whole bunch of invites on Monday and Tuesday so thats when we should worry. Either way, Tuesday we'll find out. Good Luck!

I am really surprised that Wharton would allow around a 100 candidates to defer, if that is indeed true. I thought the stated policy of all top schools was that unless it's for an extraordinary reason, that they don't allow candidates to defer b/c they are trying to round out a diversified for THAT year, not the FOLLOWING year. Crazy. I really hope this isn't true, as I think the chances for waitlisted candidates is going to significantly diminish. Unless, do you all think that those admits that deferred from last year, already had to put in a deposit, and are already accounted for?

Not trying to spread rumors, so someone please correct me if I am wrong, but I remember hearing that last year more students accepted offers at Wharton than the school had expected so they actually asked people to defer. Perhaps another reason why they are keeping such a large waitlist this year?

I guess a major question would then be at what point did Wharton require deferred admits to reply by this year regarding whether they were indeed attending Wharton (or not). I would think that Wharton would not allow deferred candidates to wait until this late in the game to reply, that they would perhaps require deferred admits to reply shortly after round 1 decisions came out, so the admissions committee can better gauge who to take in round 2. just my wild-guess theory.
