Finished with my interview yesterday. Pretty exhaustive compared to the other interviews that i have given so far. Abt 80 mins in total.
the interviewer was from a big PE fund and asked in depth questions.

Began by giving his background. ( was a double MBA !!!)
Tell me about your background and what was your thought process in taking major decisions that have affected you.
Why moved from a company X to Company Y. ( had moved from real estate dev to real estate PE)
what challenges you find in your job after one year and after two years.
Ethical dilemma.
Two leadership instances.
Professional and personal failure.
A time when you did not live up to the expectations of others
Why not MBA in India? Why not IIMs? Why not ISB?
Why MBA? Why Wharton? Why now
What do i bring to the table?
Extracurricular. had mentioned stock trading so which sectors you like and why?
LT and ST goals? Why sector agnostic PE? Which sector if all you would like to choose?
Undergrad academics?
I then asked a few questions and he was very forthcoming in answering them. Overall a phenomenal experience just meeting a Wharton alum.
Not sure what to take out of the interview as i guess its always conversational.

Best of luck to evryone else interviewing.

Hey. Congrats and I must say that was a pretty detailed interview.....sounds good. Just curious.....was urs a HUB interview or an alum interview???

Ya it was very detailed compared to others that i have had so far. But as someone pointed out in other threads, most people have had a pleasant experience. Am not sure how the final shortlisting/elimination happens and how big a role the interview has for Wharton.

The mail i got mentioned me to select only alum or on campus location. I chose the alum interview..as on campus was not possible for me...

I had my interview on Thursday @ Wharton with a 2nd year student.

It ran for about 35 minutes covering the following:

Walk me through your resume and tell me why you made the decisions that you did?
Tell me about one life changing experience
One leadership instance (personal/professional)
Why MBA? Why Wharton? Why now
What do i bring to the table?
Extracurricular in university and currently and why they are important to you?
LT and ST goals?

She the gave me some background on herself.

I then asked a few questions and he was very forthcoming in answering them.

Overall an excellent experience since I thought we connected due to some shared upbringing.

It was certainly fairly structured but she interjected as did I - all in all relaxed and pretty straightforward. If you know yourself well - the Wharton interview with 2nd yr students should not be stressful.

I just had my interview with Jackie Zavitz.. It was slightly strange and I dont know what to make out of it
As soon as I got in she told me she had to leave in 30 mins (even though the interview confirmation said that it would be a 45 min interview)..
she mostly asked me questions around why i had made certain choices -
- why this undergrad school,
- why this major
- why this extra-curric, how did you get involved with this club
- why did you move from company x to y

she did not ask me anything about my career goal or whj mba and why wharton! and thats what has left me wondering what to make of it! it felt like she already decided she didnt want to select me :(

Try to include those points (why mba/why wharton) in the thank you email? Don't give up!

2010 - I wouldn't read that much into - maybe she was hearing the same responses over and over again and just figured she would concentrate on some other things. Also, maybe there were somethings about your resume or history that make it obvious as to why you want an MBA or why Wharton is a good fit. You are just that good! think positive - Its not over til its over...

csino - thanks for the words of encouragement!

yes one way to look at it could be that she wanted to know if what i had done in life so far was by design or by chance

I have my fingers crossed!

Interview Report.

Just finished my alumni interview in New York. 40 minutes long. Very pleasant, she had not reviewed my resume before hand.

Questions I remember:

Why Wharton? Why MBA? Why now?
What was your biggest challenge professionally?
Why did you pick Company X to work for?
Why did you pick University Y?
What three contributions would you make to the Wharton community? Be specific.
Describe a leadership role you have taken in the work environment? Outside the work environment?

That's pretty much it. We chatted at the end about her experiences at Wharton.

I'm planning to apply to Wharton in R2, but it looks like I'm not going to get a chance to visit the school. Is that going to put me at a disadvantage?

the going theory is that HBS/Wharton/Stanford do NOT care about a school visit whereas the slightly lower schools like it because they are protective of their yield and want truly interested candidates (the top schools know you would love to attend there because , well, they are the top schools)

Oh, those theories...

This isn't entirely the best way of looking at things. You implicitly assume that if schools do not care about a school visit, one then should not visit.

This seems to be following the "magic pill" thinking: many people assume that there are "magic" recipes one is supposed to follow in order to get admitted.

The truth is that there is no such magic recipe, and while for some candidates a visit does not really add much value to the overall strength of the application (it is either really strong or astonishingly weak beyond repair), for others showing genuine interest through a school visit goes a long way.

On the other hand, one can learn a tremendous amount of new things about the school and the people/community/city, etc. by visiting hence gaining competitive advantage in at least three areas:
a) Making a unique judgement about the school and defining the fit.
b) Gathering more hard data and facts that will help either with essay writing or interview strategy.
c) Expressing interest in the school in a very straightforward way.

All of the above are a big part of "schmoozing", so while no school - no matter how big or small - really cares if you visit, an extra share of "schmoozing" would not hurt your application.

This is from another applicants perspective/experiences. I was there for a class visit last monday. Try to reach there early in the morning as I was hoping to be there by 9 and reached about 10 mins late and could not go to a class. I went for the 10:30am class but the prof decided to email students about cancellation and no one informed the admission office as they dont have to. We were about 4 students in class and by the time we went to admission office it was too late to go to another one.

If you dont see the students or professor on the dot just go to another one nearby.
Wharton students dont accompany you to class. You go on your own so you can walk into one of the rooms in the list of class (you can get it from admission office in the morning). Just introduce yourself to the prof and he will ask you to sit in a particular area.
I did attend the student lunch/tour and info session.

Being the week of thanksgiving we seemed to have the worst of luck as the class I picked at 1:30 was full but from previous experience, I went into another nearby class which was interesting. Being the last week of classes you might expect similar situations so be prepared.
Another good about Wharton you can attend as many classes as you want.
Current first years suggested to pick one case based and one instructor led class to get a good feel about the styles of teaching.
Core are all first yr classes
Most electives are for second yrs.
No complaints though as I did use the time in the morning I had to talk to current students and also to visit Small Business Dev Center and Center for Ent. as that is my area of interest.

Hope this random list of thoughts help you :).
