+1 on the WL roll call.

Do we really need to wait until March 1 to see some movement in this space ? Please share if you've any info on this. Cheers mates !

I think a current student in the main Yale 2012 thread said that he/she got off the waitlist on Jan 23 (I may have the date wrong.)

I am a current student at Yale, and I had been on the wait list. I was offered admission on 23 January. My results may be slightly a typical as I am currently on active duty in the Army and I had to know by 31 January or the Army would not send me to Yale period. I made that clear when I sent them my update, and that they were my first choice.

I was so surprised that I was getting off the wait list in January and I asked the ADCOM what caused the change. She said they do a review of the wait list after the deadline for round 2 submissions.

The advice in the articles posted by Jontron is essentially what I did. Actually, I did almost every single bullet point. I gave one very thorough and polished update at the beginning of January. The really great thing about this update opportunity is that you are not constrained by formatting. You can make it look really really good. I also found ways to address every single potential weakness. My final packet was 10 pages and included:

1. Promotion
2. Complete rewrite of MBA purpose essay and made it slightly more ambitious, but not fictional.
3. I actually clarified some interview questions i felt i did not answer well (no one recommends this but I thought it could really help my situation)
4. Past performance reviews from my military schools outside of undergrad to compensate for GPA
5. Letter Stating that Yale was my #1 choice and I would accept immediately, but that I needed to know by 31 January.

I put into a PDF portfolio with links and tried to make it look professional, I am sure others could do better with tools available out there.

I scoured the web for info last year, so here is a success story. I do not know what parts if any of my update helped, but I did make it in. Good luck to everyone. Feel free to PM me if you have any other questions.

I think my waitlist was because of my GMAT score but I still want to understand THEIR specific reason. Do you guys think it would be OK to email them asap first asking to clarify what the weak point was and then send a following (like in 1 month) a letter of interest stressing that Yale is my first choice and giving them an update on my latest status?

What was your GMAT score? I would retake it and then email them an update saying you improved your GMAT! Feedback is pretty rare during admission season from what I've heard...

Hi All - I was waitlisted as well (with Interview).

Dbalks - thanks for creating this forum. I'm sure it will go a long way in helping us all keep calm over the next few months.

If any of you guys are in the Boston area, come by Cambridge Brewing Company in Kendall Square this Thursday 12/20 at 8pm. A small group of first year SOMers will be hosting a casual get-together, and we might be able to offer tips on wait-list strategies.

Aksed waitlist adcom the feedback two days ago, but did not have any reply back yet.

I will write my essay during this weekend again, and then will send them.

It seems like there is not bright hope on waitlist as there are not that many people who got off waitlists last year.

sigh.

Hi Shushu -- did Adcom say they would give us feedback if requested? Also, what are you basing your essay on - just changes in your profile since you last submitted your application?

Let's not be so pessimistic, some times you have to make your own breaks. For example, there is a post out there right now titled Yale SOM vs Insead. That poor lost soul doesnt know which school to choose. Now clearly for that candidate, Insead is the right school choice. It is up to us to make them realize they dont want to go to Yale. It is time for some psychological warfare, not time to curl up into a ball and say there is no bright hope.

I say most of this in jest. Although, Insead is definitely that candidates school choice.

I think it is a possibility that they might give feedback but I don't think we should be banking on it. NYCFinanceGuy - was your email a simple one or did you elaborate on our interest on Yale etc? Just trying to form my email now...

I wrote an informal email to get details on protocol for an additional recommendation (what format, where to send it, etc.) I wrote that shortly after receiving the waitlist info, and have not heard back. Personally, I would assume they're handling admits and then will get to waitlisters after the break. (May or may not be a bad assumption. :) )

As far as what to do: jontron had a great post. I particularly liked the mba admit post.

There is the secure a promotion/take on new leadership responsibilities, but frankly I can do neither in my position. So I ignored that. Also, there are the get a better GMAT score and take courses to prepare yourself analytically. Well I took up to differential equations and linear algebra, have two science degrees, and an advanced degree with biostatistics and epidemiology research, so if they think I need to spruce up my "analytical background", then they're silly. :P

However, I will certainly write a formal letter of interest. I can secure another letter of recommendation from someone who was too busy during the months before due date. And hopefully, I will be able to make a visit to campus. Been to the med center and main campus plenty, but never to SOM.

Anyway that's my plan; good luck! :-D

As, an aside, I have two impressive offers on the table with substantial scholarship/fellowship money. I am still strongly considering Yale despite that. Is that something I should point out in my letter of interest? I would assume yes, and it would be great for them to know that I still think highly of them despite great offers, but I know this process is littered with bizarre fortuitous faux pas that my head spins.

I found a great post from last year's thread -- hope it helps you guys get in this year!

TIPS FOR WAITLISTED CANDIDATES:

1) Send an email within the 1st week to the WL manager to ask questions to make sure you know the WL rules well. For example, when and how they would assess WL candidates from now on? On rolling basis or in a batch after some time?

2) Send your Letter of Interest say latest by January end. During my own WL, I was advised to send the LoI in at least 1-2 weeks before the Deposit Deadline of Admits. [Edit: Deadline is March 1, 2013 for R1 Class of 2015]

3) Ask for more recommendation letters, especially from graduates of Yale or peers schools. I provided 3 more recommendations during my WL.

4) Don't send them more than 1 email update per month, but try to send one at least every 6 weeks. Content of updates I sent included: deepened understanding on Yale SOM after chat with current students, job promotion and job change.

It's been while to come to this thread.
Merry christmas, guys.

I think I will apply for some schools I targeted along with YALE on 2nd round as it is a bit risky only to rely on yale at this moment.

But once my promotion is officially announced, I will send the essay again about why~ with more serious and detailed approach.
Situation is not the optimisic, as I have the slightest chance not to get prmoted even tough I got the highest rank in performance review (who knows) and the recommendar, yale alumni, whom I expected to get another recommendation letter from, does not reply back to me yet.

Worst christmas every. phew.

If we were to submit additional letters of recommendation, how would we have to submit the same:

(a) Would it be as part of the letter of intent we would be sending them (in this case, we would have visibility to the LOR - which ideally we shouldn be having)

or

(b) The recommend-er sends it separately to the Yale address??

Thanks,
