I don't think they "expect" internationals to go to SS, but they did say (I forgot if it was in an email someone posted or a blog) that if you cannot make SS, then they are sorry that they won't be able to schedule an alum interview until AFTER SS. So you could get an interview invite after the SS craziness is over, during the week of 1/21-25. Don't give up hope yet!

I sure hope so!

So honestly I had almost given up hope on getting an interview invite from Berkeley (my first choice), but much to my surprise, when I returned from a meeting this morning, I had an interview invite in my inbox!! My invite was not for Super Saturday so don't give up hope yet...looks like there may be more to come.

Congrats red_s4. My hope is dwindling by the day. What date is your interview if it wasn't scheduled on super saturday?

They gave a choice of a non-Super Saturday on campus interview or a local alumni interview. I chose the local alumnus option since I have already been to campus. Once I chose that option, I received an email instructing me to email the interviewer requesting to set up something. I've emailed him and awaiting a response.

I wonder why I was invited to Super Saturday since I'm a local? Berkeley's proccesses aren't as transparent as other schools.

same here... I wasn't given a choice at all. Just a "Come to Super Saturday".

btw, CONGRATS Red_s4! too bad we won't meet at Super Saturday, but maybe we'll meet if we both get in!

Saw this on the BW forum and was wondering whether you guys think it's true. It seems to imply that the admit rate for Super Saturday invitees is actually higher than 75%.

"Clear Admit had the following to say about invites at Haas:

'The school invites roughly 25% of the applicant pool to interview each year, and admits just under 20% (the selectivity for the Class of 2008 was 18%), translating to a 75% acceptance rate for interviewed applicants.

While these are certainly favorable odds, they are slightly skewed by the number of applicants who are invited to interview at one of the school’s two Super Saturdays and the high likelihood of admission for those who travel to the school for this event. This is partially because the program only invites applicants in whom it is quite interested, and partially due to concerns of yield, as willingness to make the trip to campus on a specified day is taken as a sign of interest in the program and likeliness to attend."

thanks JJ for the article. I would believe it to be true, since Haas is very interested in yield. It is interesting, however, that us Bay Area people are also invited to the SS, when the official letter sent out to us clearly stated that the SS is for people outside the Bay Area to "visit the campus".

I do like the 75% acceptance rate of those interviewed! Hope I don't mess up!!!

Kry,

don't worry too much everyone. Haas (like Stanford), sends out invites till the last minute (before decisions). And the good thing is, a WL just means they're doing yield control and evaluating you later. Haas had some insane statistics on their WL last year, with 50% of the people getting off of the WL. So think of it this way, getting a WL and getting an interview has about the same chance of admittance! (using the 25% interviewed, 12-14% accepted this year - estimate)

Some news from Haas regarding Waitlists:

https://haas.berkeley.edu/MBA/enews/jan08/story1.html

Quote:

In the Berkeley Full-time MBA admissions process, receiving an offer of a place on the waitlist is a very positive sign, especially in the early rounds. As we review applications in the early rounds, we are primarily “calibrating” our decisions based on the previous application cycle. In other words, we don’t know what is coming in subsequent rounds, but we have a very clear picture of the quality of the previous incoming class. There are some candidates whom we feel have potential, but we’d like to see how they compare with applications in subsequent rounds. These candidates are offered a place on the waitlist.

When receiving waitlist offers, applicants are encouraged to schedule interviews and are given a list of additional information that they can provide to potentially stregthen their candidacies. After we have released the decisions from the next round, we will revisit the waitlist. Based on the additional information that we will have about the applicants, some who are waitlisted may be offered admission at that time, some will be released from the list, as we know they will not ultimately be strong enough, and others will remain on the waitlist as we move into the next round. This process continues until Round 4, after which we narrow our waitlist to a smaller group of candidates who might receive an offer of admission if a deposited student is unable to attend.
