jc2010, CONGRATS! Double whammy eh? Nice!!!

It's a tough choice, but there's actually a thread in BW talking about this. Here is my response:
Quote:
Both wonderful schools for entrepreneurship, especially in tech.
Haas probably has a bigger focus (outside of tech) on non-profit, social responsibility, energy/net impact, and things like that. MIT is probably a little stronger in tech (though both schools are very strong).
Haas has better weather, MIT has larger classes (could be a pro or con). MIT is in the "M7", Haas is just outside of it (#8 in many rankings this year), and slightly better than Columbia in a few aspects (thus the Haas-Columbia exchange program for 3 students a year).
I don't think you can go wrong with either, so you really need to visit the schools to see if you fit their "culture". I don't know too much about MIT, but if I had to pick, I would decide based on where you want to live, where you want to work afterwards, and how much you like the professors and students.
(second post)
Anyway, again, to answer your question, MIT and Haas are great schools for VC and Entrepreneurship, with the difference that Haas might have a stronger (slightly) brand name and connections on the West Coast, while MIT rules the East Coast and Midwest.
MIT's general "brand" name is better than Haas because of its history, and its engineering/science school is also second to none. But Berkeley, like someone else said, is one of the top all around schools, which offer strengths in other subjects. Apples and Oranges I guess.
Haas is also strong in things like Net Impact, Energy, Social Responsibility, Real Estate, and Social Ventures, if that's the type of Entrepreneurship you want to do.
In the end, I don't think you can go wrong going to either school for Entrepreneurship and VC, and it really depends on location. Haas' name probably won't be as strong on the East Coast, while MIT will be strong everywhere but will diminish a little here on the West Coast.
My 2 cents, and hope that helps!
You can try to call MIT up and ask for a longer decision date, I'm sure they will be accomodating if you're nice about it and explain your reasoning. It would be unreasonable if they expect you to make your decisions without actually going to admit weekend events.
What do you want to do for your long term goal? That may help.
Here are some Strengths for each school, in my mind:
Haas:
- Strong in Tech and Entrepreneurship on the West Coast and Asia
- Smaller class size, tight knit group
- Very very collaborative culture
- Very strong in social responsibility, net impact, social venture, etc...
- Improving every year for the past few years, due to a very good "acting" dean (who may become full dean this year)
- Great weather
- Cheaper (though cost will climb about 7% a year for the next 3-4 years)
MIT:
- Strong in Tech and Entrepreneurship on the East Coast and Europe
- Stronger general brand name (UE vs E)
- Very established in the B-school world and the school is very established in the tech world
I might have to defer more MIT strengths to River and NC...
