I submitted my app in early October and received an interview invite yesterday also. Congrats to everyone.

Painful wait... Guess it'll be about 12 more days.

The wait isn't painful; it is excruciating ... I think they should all send invite on the same day and be done with it. At least we wouldn't stress too much before the D-Day... Arrgggghhh

Also, my phone battery is dying really fast. Checking email every 5 minutes doesn't work too well. I think I should have backup batteries...

Maybe I'm just more laid back than others but I'm not too concerned as to how soon it may come. They told me I would hear by the 12th and if it comes any earlier that is just an added bonus.

Where are you guys staying for your on campus interveiw? While I live in San Diego, I have been in Detroit for business for a while, and as such, will be flying in from Detroit to O'Hare on Thursday night. Since it is too late to change that flight leg, I am planning to take the train from O'Hare to Midway and find a hotel there. I figured this would be best, since I would only be about 9 miles from campus for the interview, and easily be able to get back to the airport to make my flight afterward. However, I started wondering whether I would be better off staying somewhere downtown. It would make it more challenging to go back and get my luggage before flying back home, but I wonder how noisy a night at a Midway airport hotel would be.

Keep in mind that the area around Midway airport is very run down. It's probably the last place I'd want to spend a night in the Chicago area.

On advice from some Chicago residents I'm staying in the Loop/Magnificent Mile area...they said it'd be easy to just take public transportation to the school, and it was fairly close to the midway airport.

I'm booked at the Peninsula right now because my company has a relationship there but if somebody knows a good hotel I would easily change. Is anybody else staying in the Water Tower area?

For the interview i stayed at UChicago's own International House, which is just a couple blocks from Harper and pretty cheap ~$70 a night. The accommodations are pretty poor (think dorm room), but my biggest concern was getting to the interview.

I think I will stay in the Midway area, just because it's an easy drive to the GSB down 55th street from Midway. I'm getting there Thursday night, interviewing Friday, and leaving Friday afternoon. As long as I don't get stabbed, shot, or mugged, I'm OK...fingers crossed.

Perhaps I will try to stay downtown then. I am just a bit concerned as to whether I can get from my interview (which is supposed to end at 12:15pm) to the hotel to grab my bag to Midway for a 2:40pm flight. As for crime, I've been working on a project in downtown Detroit for six months, so it'd be something I'm used to.

In general I recommend people stay downtown because you get a much better feel of Chicago, and theres a lot more todo at night, but if you are coming in late, leaving early and doing absolutely nothing other than checkin in, sleeping, interviewing and checking out, it really doesn't matter where the heck you end up staying.

Also, crime really isnt an issue in Hyde park... honestly.

As for your plan.....Its a bit tight -- depends on your risk aversion i guess. I'd suggest you just bring the bag with you to the interview, its no big deal - a lot of people do. HP to downtown is approx 15 to 20 minutes by car, assuming you finish at 12:15 on the dot, get into your cab by 12:20, youd be at your hotel by 12:35 or 12:40 - ten to fifteen minutes to get upstairs, grab your bag, check out, back out by 12:55pm, back in the cab to midway by 1:00, you should be there by 1:30pm to 1:45pm - giving you approx an hour to make your flight.

edit: If your flight is out of ohare and not midway (which I thought it was) this would be quite tight. Traffic on fridays is hard to predict, it can take 20 minutes to get to ohare from downtown, or it can take 45 minutes to an hour.

Hey guys - good luck with the next week of interview invites! I am crossing my fingers for you all, and trying to preoccupy myself with things not involving the computer, blackberry, etc. So far it's not working!
