I think you're right. This is what a guy said on BW forum:

Quote:
mNeo,

It is in fact different. When you are waitlisted it means that the adcom will NOT admit you if everything goes as planned (i.e. good yield from everyone they have extended offers to).

When you are deferred, they are still debating if they should, in fact, extend you an offer.

Again, it is possible to get deferred and then waitlisted... or deferred and rejected... or deferred and accepted... they just have not made up their minds yet.

Another one said:
Quote:
as Fchung says, Defered is a much more posite answer that a waitlist. It's not as good as an admit, but it's gives you more chances that a waitlist.

Defered means that your application will be read again in mid/late january; waitlist means that your application will be read in may/june only if to many people withdraw their admit invite.

If I were in your shoes, I would be very proactive contacting adcom members and sharing with them any updates in my profile. I would definitely send them an email in early january with any promotions/raises/new experiences; maybe I would ask for a thrid recom or an email from an alumni; maybe anothet GMAT if you can take it 30 - 40 points up; anything that shows improvements and continued interest for CBS

But on what basis would they defer my application when they had another 6 weeks to give me a decision?

Ok,
Whats with Columbia? My application went under review on September 17, today is October 18. No change in status. No interview invite/no ding. Anybody else out here who has not heard anything from CBS.

I am just thinking of picking up the phone and calling up ad-com to thank them for making me spend one month in misery. And then gently ask them if they have dinged me or not?

I have reached new levels of desperation. I am now praying to get dinged from CBS so that I dont have to wake up every morning and open up my email and app status page.
Spare me the agony please!!!!!!!

mNeo, time to raise your score 40pts...oh like thats possible haha. I think columbia gives decisions as they read each application. You might be so borderline on being accepted that they want to see how the larger pool plays out. Time to get your boss to give you a new fancy title that you can tell them.

I hear ya avi,

They made me wait 6 weeks only to hand out a straight ding.

Wait another two weeks before you call them.

I would not call them. It's not going to help (it might even hurt) the situation. My app went under review on the 22nd, so I'm only a few days behind. It sucks, but focus the energy on your other apps.

hang in there, avi. Considering that no one else in the club has got a waitlist status, I think you are in a pretty good position.

no clue whats going on.

Called up ad-com.......I asked them if I was waitlisted or deferred....

and how is it possible to be waitlisted without an interview.

They told me that my app package was reviewed...they aparently waitlist candidates without interviews also...

They will review my package in R2 again to see if I need to be interviewed

Is this normal???

mNeo clarified that he is actually on the deferred list, not on the waitlist.

Dude, you got a non-ding result out of your very first application. You know how much you've improved in your application skills since then, don't you? So, I say, "Congratulations on the waitlist. Now go do one better for other schools!"

psst. That is what I've been telling myself for my "deferral". BTW, when you asked if you were deferred or waitlisted, did you also ask how the two differ anyway?

ps. It appears that Col likes to select only reapplicants in the ED round. I have read about more than 10 reapplicants getting selected, but not one 'first-time applicant' getting selected. I am sure that now someone is going to point me to a post of a 'first-time applicant' getting selected

asked Ad-com for the difference between deferral and waitlisted

deferral means u are in the game - they want to see how u r against other applicants in the next round.. if ur as strong or stronger.u r in....no more interviews.. not waiting to see who does not get admitted, etc

waitlist...means.. they will wait until they have vacant seats.. in which case.. they will do the next needful.

Thank you everyone for your support and words of enthusiasm..means a lot for me.. sniff..sniff

but ya.. Columbia ED is a total sham... there is nothing ED about it..

I guess I dont have to fork out 6000 bucks now.. Vegas.. here I come

Ya judging by appearance on admin411 and discussion on other sites the ED round should be the Reapp round.
