Congratulations to all those who have been accepted today or yesterday out of the watilist. Can you guys tell us what steps you have taken after you got waitlisted. I have already written an update essay to the school, but couldnt manage to get any recommendation letter from an alumni. Wondering if you have any suggestion?

I did submit an additional recommendation from a alumni, since I work in MC, it's not hard to find someone who went to Booth. If you really can't find a alumni, I have heard of people asking current Booth students to write them a recommendation letter as well. Perhaps you have a friend or met someone there during campus visits?

Rhyme, I would love to agree with you, but this isn't an issue of just 3 months. This isn't even an issue of just 6 months. The reality is that this "process" can be as long as 9 months or more depending on when you submitted your application and how long Rose, her team and Chicago Booth choose to abuse the waitlist process.

I agree the process is long - or well, at least can be - and I think there's some merit to the concept that if they haven't said "yes" to you in 6 months, they probably wont say yes to you in 9, and they should put people out of their misery. I don't think its any kind of intentional 'abuse' though. Unpleasant as it is, at least one has a chance (and as seen by the people getting off the waitlist recently, a real fighting chance not just a token one).

Quote:

I get it. Chicago Booth is a difficult place to recruit. It's clearly below H/S, and at best, competitive with W. And no knock to Chicago Booth or its students, but for most applicants Chicago Booth is a hedge against being reject from H/S/W. Add to it it's in the Mid-West and it's obvious Chicago Booth is at a disadvantaged compared to its peers.

I'm of course biased, but I'm not sure I agree its a 'difficult' place to recruit. They get plenty of applications from plenty of qualified candidates. I don't disagree that it tends to come after H/S -- it certainly does -- but that hardly makes the school 'a difficult' place to attract talent. Were talking a top 5 school pretty much any way you want to dice it.

Second, placing people on the waitlist doesn't strike me as a good recruiting strategy anyway. If anything it's a risky one -- the best candidates are the ones most likely to have offers from other programs and even those who are boderline are unlikely to hang around waiting for Booth when they have another yes in hand. The goal wouldn't be to maximize waitlist use, it would be to minimize it. Worse yet, waitlist candidates are historically low yield, precisely because many will have moved on (new job, other admits, etc).

Moreover, last year they had exactly the opposite problem - yield was higher than anticipated and the class ended up being something like 50 people bigger than intended. This creates some obvious challenges -- e.g. ensuring enough class space and courses to accommodate - and some less obvious ones too such as not having enough lockers in the building. Rose certainly didn't plan for that and there's no question this contributed to people being stuck on the waitlist for long periods of time. If you get to know Rose, you'd know she'd never waitlist candidates she didn't seriously consider and she wouldn't keep people on if she didn't think there was a point.

If anything this strikes me as the more reasonable explanation for the waitlist -- given unprecedented yield they have to be more careful with the number of acceptances. It's not 'abuse', its intake management.

Quote:

In light of these expectations and my clear sense of what is reasonable and what is not, Rose continues to undercut Chicago Booth's reputation by abusing the waitlist.

I really doubt their waitlist management strategy has a meaningful impact on the schools 'reputation'. I'm sure being put on a waitlist -- for any amount of time -- makes that school less attractive to that particular candidate (after all who wants to be 2nd choice?), but I can't see how it would impact other people's perceptions or the school's overall reputation.

Finally, if someone chooses not to apply to Booth because they don't like their waitlist policies, I'd find that pretty near-sighted. I've never heard of anyone talking about the school's reputation as a function of their admissions process -- and certainly not in a negative light - if anything, people tend to praise it for being more transparent and open than most.

Quote:

Chicago Booth doesn't command a yield comparable to that of the top 3, yet it continues to set deadlines that coincide with the likes of H/S/W.

Well, doesn't that make sense? If they set their deadline prior to H/S/W, they risk having a number of people capitulate (at least for H/S), if they set it to after H/S/W they are simply taking themselves out of the running for those candidates outright. While I agree that people will choose H/S over C nine times out of ten, Wharton is less clear cut I think. Finally, if you want to be a peer school to the top programs you can't simply "work around" their schedules, giving them "first dibs". You have to compete head on.

Also, and im asking seriously to anyone who knows, is Booth really the only school that does this?

I actually didn't send in any additional materials. I was planned on doing so early June (work was too busy beforehand), especially because I was positive I wouldn't hear back on May 26th since I was a R3 waitlister. That's great that you sent an update essay - I don't think another letter will hurt, but I don't think it'll make or break your case. I wish you the best of luck, Lionvish!

Is it me, or am I the only one who's starting to think Chicago Booth's waitlist has gotten out of control?

While I understand your frustration, wouldn't you rather still be in the running than just be arbitrarily denied based on some other criteria -- e.g. no one can be on the waitlist more than 3 months? At least this way you still have a chance.

It's crazy, but I found a thread from last year where the very first post was from someone waitlisted in R1 who continued to be on the waitlist into the summer (and presumably was rejected since no one came off of the waitlist that year). So no, Rhyme, this has moved beyond just me being frustrated to Rose unnecessarily alienated a large recruiting base and arguably undercuts Chicago Booth's overall reputation.

However, this doesn't mean Rose and her team need to apply unnecessary, and in some cases, unreasonable tactics to recruit students. For instance, I have a friend who works as an admissions officer at a top 3 liberal arts college (read: Amherst, Swarthmore, or Williams), and although the undergraduate level is different from the graduate level, many of the practices remain the same. According to him, one such example is NOT double waitlisting a student. At the undergraduate level, this would be akin to deferring a student during early decision then waitlisting him or her again during the regular season. This does NOT occur at his institution and he's been told by the Dean that it's tacitly understood among all elite college admissions officers that this tactic is both unreasonable and unfair. In light of these expectations and my clear sense of what is reasonable and what is not, Rose continues to undercut Chicago Booth's reputation by abusing the waitlist. Chicago Booth doesn't command a yield comparable to that of the top 3, yet it continues to set deadlines that coincide with the likes of H/S/W. As a result, Chicago Booth unduly forces itself to not only carry a deep waitlist, but also regularly double/triple waitlist students. That's fine if your end goal is to artificially enhance the school's yield, but one needs to understand that this comes at the expense of the school's reputation.

In short, Chicago Booth is unnecessarily monkey-barring each and every one of its waitlist students not for the better good of the school, but because of a lack of institutional control, lack of foresight, and lack of leadership to compete in this difficult space. By failing to adequately address these challenges and instead, choosing to abuse the use of the waitlist, Rose unduly alienates its prospective students.

It's standard practice at all the top b-schools to keep a waitlist through the summer. The second deposit deadline for Chicago R1 and R2 is tomorrow so I expect that a LOT of currently waitlisted candidates will get definite responses in the next two weeks. The actual number of candidates kept on the waitlist through the summer is pretty small (typically limited to students that already live in Chicago). There is absolutely nothing unusual about this at all.

It is undeniably frustrating to be waitlisted from R1 or R2 and I can imagine that it is also frustrating for the admissions committee to have candidates that pay BOTH deposits and then end up not showing up for classes in the fall. The summer waitlist appears to be a necessary evil. Be assured that if you are still on that waitlist, the admissions committee is still very interested in you.

PS - It's presumptuous to assume that Chicago is a back-up for Wharton. For me, it was the other way around and I know several other people who think the same. Wharton has way too many negatives that counteract the benefits of its reputation.

Supersonic,

I fully understand your frustration and I know many people that are in the same situation as yours, or even worse, because being internationals their chances to be admitted get slimmer by the second.

However, I would like to point out a couple of things out of your rant. First, their admissions process is by far the most honest and transparent to the extent of what an admissions process can be. A couple of examples: 1) You know what to expect during the decision date, they will call you if you are in, they wont if you are not and they will send you an email or post in the adcom blog what they are going to do. Decisions are out at 9am CDT and we are all clear. 2) Rules for the waitlisted are clear from the very beginning, you can send extra material and you can be as pushy as you want. There are no double standards like in Wharton where they say "Do not send anything" but in the end they really care if you can get extra rec letters. 3) They keep in touch with their waitlisted candidates, unlike MIT, Kellogg or Wharton.

Second, agreeing with Tdave and Rhyme, Chicago is no longer Wharton's back up, given Booth name in the finance world and the prominence of its faculty, combined with the long tradition of Free-Market/libertarian thinking of school, Booth is a huge draw for many many people. Also, Chicago is hundred times a better place to live than Philly. I agree with you that Wharton has more name and reputation, but hard data has been cruel to Wharton over the last couple years and that has made many people think twice.

Third, today is deposit deadline, if there is massive summer melt they will take people off the waitlist for sure.

That may be possible, but I find it hard to believe that everyone who put down their initial money for round 1 paid their second deposit. I'd imagine there would be at least some movement with the second deposit that was due on Friday.

I received an email asking me how much more interested I am in staying on the waitlist and how long I would be willing to stay on it. I think that means another 2 weeks of waiting...

I've been on the waitlist since R1 and I applied in August, so we're coming up on 1 year of waiting....
