I've withdrawn my offer of admission to Rice. It's an awesome program but I believe UNC is a better fit for me. Good luck everyone.

It's gotten quiet! How are people doing with setting up their budgets for this fall? I just realized that loans don't cover car payments and will be pretty tight on funds.

Although I do think "bridge loans" are available From private institutions if one were to run out of money.

have any 4th round applications heard anything yet? any interviewed or waitlisted?

I applied R4 (30 minutes before the final deadline!) and interviewed in mid-April. I was not the only interviewee that day. Most of them had much better 'pedigrees' than me, though of course that's no guarantee that the rest of their application was as strong.

I got in with a scholarship (found out this week). So people are definitely getting in for R4.

I hear you. My biggest concern is keeping my ancient (though reliable) car going for another 2 years. The commute between my initial lodgings and Rice is long and brutal, so I may be using the park and ride a lot.

Anyone know how/if Rice does their background verification? When is my employer going to find out about this "the hard way" (i.e. someone calling to verify employment)? So far my plans are a secret to all but a few :-D

Yes they do. Not sure if timing is by rounds, but if you were just admitted, I would call to find out when they're planning to start the verification process.

Congrats on the admit. Rice runs background checks through HireRight, which is similar to Kroll (another popular background check firm other b-schools use). I filled out my HireRight background form a couple of weeks ago. The whole process took about 45 minutes and I have not heard anything back yet. However, in this situation no news should definitely be good news.

Another item to note on the background form is that I had the option to prohibit HireRight from contacting my current employer (which I did). Feel free to contact me if you have anymore questions.

Has anyone looked into potential computers that will fit the requirements set forth by the program?

On a different note, did anyone see that Andrew Fastow (former Enron CFO) was released from federal prison to a halfway house in Houston? Something makes me think that he won't be giving guest lectures at the Jones School as part of his work-release program. I still can't believe that he only got 6 years and Skilling got 24 since the government basically made Fastow out to be the mastermind.

I think I'm gonna get a friend of mine to build my laptop. Are the laptop requirements listed online or just in the admit book?

They are listed in the admit book but an updated version with a few changes is on OwlSpace. I don't see recommended models anywhere (online or in the admit book) though.

I haven't seen the list on OwlSpace yet (submitting my deposit tomorrow), but the requirements in the admissions binder/FB group aren't anything special. You could get a decent laptop for about half of the $2k allowance. 13.3" or 14" models were highly recommended in other b-school discussions - primarily because we will be lugging them around a lot. You can always plug in a desktop LCD when you're at home.

Look at the Toshiba Portege and Tecra lines, Lenovo Thinkpad T and X lines, or the Apple MacBook Pro (with Bootcamp or Parallels). You want a sturdy business laptop and not a low-end consumer model (these tend to fall apart/fail after serious use, especially the keyboards and disk drives). Plus the cheap ones have lousy QA, meaning you may find yourself trying to RMA your laptop in the middle of Immersion.

Otherwise, regular laptop purchase rules apply. Spend money on memory before processor speed - 4GB memory + a basic Core i3/i5 will do just fine. Also, go to a store and try out the keyboards - you will find that some keyboards just don't work with your hands.

After reading through the comments here I've decided to apply to Rice in round 1 instead of 2. Rice definitely seems like a great program career wise (energy and financial in Houston), high quality facility, and the short turnaround time for admission... not to mention the generous scholarship they offered to many applicants here.

I will apply to UT Austin and Texas A&M as well. I'm from Arizona and I would apply to ASU as well.

Thanks for the great read in this thread!

Fastow cooperated. Skilling did not.

Those are all great choices. I can't believe 2011-2012 admissions season is upon us. The time goes by fast. I'll send you my contact info off the board.

Awesome, thanks!

I've just started posting today and I've already get acquainted with someone from the UT Austin thread already. This sure is a great biz school community!

Does anyone know when the new app for next year will be out? I received a user ID to begin my online app but the only date available for me to pick is 4/4/11. I aim to become the first person this year to submit the app :-D

If Rice maintains a similar Round 1 deadline, you're probably looking at early September. However, since you generated a sign-in ID you should be sent an automated email when the application becomes available.
