A. is closely linked to this social evolution, so in order to prevent abnormal conduct, an owner must learn to care and dominate the animal simultaneously
"learn to care...the animal?" need "for" to make sense here. incorrect

B. is closely linked as this social evolution, and so in order to prevent abnormal conduct, an owner must learn to care for and dominate the animal simultaneously
"as" what? should be closely linked to something, not linked as something.
canines....,and their behavior...., and so in order to.." not parallel

C. is closely linked to this social evolution, so in order to prevent abnormal conduct, the animal should simultaneously be cared for and dominated by the owner who must learn
owner must learn what?? not the best choice but hold on

D. and social evolution are closely linked, so in order to prevent abnormal conduct, an owner must learn to care for and dominate the animal simultaneously
seems fine

E. is closely linked to this social evolution, so in order to prevent abnormal conduct, an owner must learn to simultaneously care for and dominate the animal at the same time
use of words "simultaneous" and "same time" together in a sentence is redundant as both convey the same meaning.

between C& D, D conveys the meaning more clearly and is in active voice.
IMO D

Passive voice is not an automatic error on the GMAT. Considering the modifier "so in order to prevent abnormal conduct", "the animal" conveys an illogical meaning, as if it is the animal that needs to prevent its own conduct, and not the owners.

D clearly becomes the better choice after this consideration.

Thank you. I couldn't see this approach, but your explanation is really helpful.
I Appreciate the help.

A. is closely linked to this social evolution, so in order to prevent abnormal conduct, an owner must learn to care and dominate the animal simultaneously

B. is closely linked as this social evolution, and so in order to prevent abnormal conduct, an owner must learn to care for and dominate the animal simultaneously

C. is closely linked to this social evolution, so in order to prevent abnormal conduct, the animal should simultaneously be cared for and dominated by the owner who must learn

D. and social evolution are closely linked, so in order to prevent abnormal conduct, an owner must learn to care for and dominate the animal simultaneously

E. is closely linked to this social evolution, so in order to prevent abnormal conduct, an owner must learn to simultaneously care for and dominate the animal at the same time

This is a SC Butler Question

OFFICIAL EXPLANATION

Canines have evolved as pack animals, and their behavior is closely linked to this social evolution, so in order to prevent abnormal conduct, an owner must learn to care and dominate the animal simultaneously.

A. is closely linked to this social evolution, so in order to prevent abnormal conduct, an owner must learn to care and dominate the animal simultaneously

This answer choice is grammatically incorrect. The verb care requires a preposition in order to correctly connect to the animal. One cannot care an animal - one can care for an animal.

Whenever the first verb requires a preposition after it and the second verb does not, the preposition must not be omitted:

Incorrect: John cares and loves Jane.
Correct: John cares for and loves Jane.

What helps us identify this question as a Split Construction question and identify the mistake is the following Stop Sign:

    A split construction: Verb A + and/or + Verb B + object

B. is closely linked as this social evolution, and so in order to prevent abnormal conduct, an owner must learn to care for and dominate the animal simultaneously

Although this answer choice corrects the original Split Construction error by adding the preposition for, it is grammatically incorrect because it uses an incorrect preposition (as) in the phrase as this social evolution. The correct idiom is linked to.

C. is closely linked to this social evolution, so in order to prevent abnormal conduct, the animal should simultaneously be cared for and dominated by the owner who must learn

Although this answer choice corrects the original Split Construction error by adding the preposition for, it creates redundancy by using the passive form in the phrase be cared for and dominated by the owner. Since there is another grammatically correct answer choice that does not use the passive form, it is preferable to this one.

D. and social evolution are closely linked, so in order to prevent abnormal conduct, an owner must learn to care for and dominate the animal simultaneously

The verb care requires a preposition in order to correctly connect to the animal. This answer choice solves this error by adding the preposition for.

Note that this answer choice changes the subject to "behavior and social evolution", a plural subject, which requires the concurrent shift to a plural verb "are". The other answer choices correctly match a singular subject "behavior" with a singular verb "is", so SVA is not an issue in this question - the other answer choices are eliminated for other reasons of redundancy/incorrect use of prepositions.

E. is closely linked to this social evolution, so in order to prevent abnormal conduct, an owner must learn to simultaneously care for and dominate the animal at the same time

Although this answer choice corrects the original Split Construction error by adding the preposition for, it creates Redundancy by using the word simultaneously and the phrase at the same time in the same sentence since they mean the same thing.
