Hello all,
So I am currently halfway through a large statewide budget implementation for CGI. We were supposed to go live this august but the state opted to extend for another year. On this project I have taken on a Senior consultants share of work (80 hour weeks on the regular). I ended up being the only person on the project who could perform extensions and patches for the product, this is while i was designated as a functional analyst. CGI's product manager was frequently on the project because it was high profile and mentored me directly, she actually wanted me on the project team, however the following issues prevent that.
- Me and my direct manager are the only two people on the budget team who have been here since the start, they are trying to shoehorn me into steady state support, post go-live.
-My manger is literally the worst deligator and person I have ever met. She frequently takes her anger out on me and has told me she is "on her happy pills again".
So career advancement might be possible, but CGI seems to be bad with promotions and I am also making far less than I deserve (50K). The software I am working with is also only implemented by CGI so staying might greatly decrease my odds of ever working anywhere else.
Anyways Accenture is about to offer me a position for 65K plus even though it is a strictly lateral move. The position would not be a title increase but I am considering asking if I can be promoted sooner due to my prior experience. I would also be learning SAP, which is a far more versitile product. I am wondering how this will effect my MBA hopes. It worries me because i am not finishing the project and I am not moving up vertially with this hop. The recruiter even told me I was overqualified.

Thanks for sharing your situation, however I don't have enough information to answer your question. When are you planning to apply? How long have you been with the firm? How would your responsibilities change at Accenture? What do you want an MBA for? What does your general profile look like?

I have been with CGI for a year and a half where I moved up in responsibility, but not rank quickly due to roll offs. I was in charge of all patches and xml/sql customizations, I was the only functional SME who has been on the project who knew the business processes and functionality fully other than my manager, I also helped lead user acceptance test efforts and lead design on numerous modules. The project go live is in August 2016 due to the a delay (we were ready to go live this October but the client was not prepared). If I were to stay long term it is likely I would be here for over 3 Years with small pay increases (the high end here is 3% which I will be receiving again) and no promotion. The job i am interviewing at Accenture for is described as follows.
"The System Specialist is responsible for analysis, design, and testing of components of SAP APO, SAP ECC, SAP BW, and JDA Manugistics. The System Specialist is involved in maintenance, enhancement and/or development work of SAP APO, SAP ECC, SAP BW, and JDA Manugistics modules and those that interface with other applications. The System Specialist has a range of skills and knowledge of the technologies used and applications supported by Client Service Teams. The System Specialist is required to participate in pager/on-call support. The System Specialist reports to the Client Service Team Manager"
My Pros-
-This position would likely pay 40% more even if it is not a "higher position" and is more technically oriented.
-I can tell the manager out of the gat what my goals are, my current manager is not exactly easy to talk to.
-More prestigious company, and SAP is a technology that is widely used and implemented, unlike CGI's ERP which is only implemented by CGI and used by state governments.
My Fears-
-Not Finishing the project
- The product manager and me are very close and she could possibly give me opportunity down the road, it just seems like i will be stuck on this project for a very long time. She would likely still write me a recommendation even if I leave.
My long term goal is to be a product manager of technical manager at Google or another high tech firm/ or a high tech startup. I want to know if this move will hurt or help my profile and MBA aspirations.
