I am a civil engineer seeking a transition into marketing - specifically brand management. I know I have to show my reasoning for the switch. I have no experience in marketing and I am afraid that adcom won't see my switch a viable on. Do I necessarily need to show a long standing interest in marketing or is showing that I have knowledge of the field more important? I am currently taking a marketing course and plan to take a market research course. Is this enough to support that my interest isn't fleeting?

You should strongly consider working with a trusted consultant, because it will take finesse, strategy, and real thought to make sure your goals story is a good one.
There's no reason your progression can't be viable, but I'm afraid this is one of those areas where it takes multiple revisions with an expert to make sure it is done right. There isn't really a quick note I can pass along as to what you should write.
