Hi. This is a nice eye candy of data and people always look for it, but the reality that I think we all know and understand deep down in our hearts is that all it is, is just a trinket for reassurance.

The chances of an admission after an interview, don’t really depend on your interview for most programs. This is just a short listing of people who looked interesting for one or multiple reasons that the school did not deny in the first sifting through the resumes and applications. Many schools spent just a few weeks reviewing the applications and the resumes and make very hasty decisions that are often more hasty than right. Then they spend another 6 to 8 weeks more diligently reviewing profiles and figuring out who to admit with interview playing a minor role in the whole process so I would have to dive in deeper and digging deeper into the interview statistics but I don’t think I would be doing more than just creating data that is nice but not meaningful. So I kinda don’t have much of an inspiration in focus on it. Sorry.

That’s a very solid insight! Also, thanks for the clarification!

I was of the opinion that since pretty much all the top schools accept more than 60% of the interviewed candidates (per this data), this must mean that most of the scrutiny wound’ve happened pre-interview invite! Interesting!

That is exactly what I thought in the past as well but after working with the number of admissions directors and engaging with them about the process, and reflecting on it, I realize that a number of schools will spend 3 to 4 weeks to send out interview invites and then they’ll spend two months to roll out the decisions. It seems it would be illogical if they evaluated the entire profile of 1,000 people and then needed twice as much time to just add the interview component of 500 people they interviewed. And I knew that the evaluation time after the interviews was really busy and there’s a lot of work, so that means the pre-interview evaluation has to be weaker and more hasty simply by logic. I hope no school takes offense because I don’t mean any but I’m just looking at the number of hours in the day....

Then I realized the reality that the interview invites are done very hastily. Not always, but quite often. And that is why you have to apply to as many schools as you can in order to avoid being rejected hastily or take advantage of being included hastily. The only protection to that is applying in numbers unfortunately.

Your point about applying to multiple schools is valid, as the admissions process has multiple elements and the analysis varies everytime(depending upon the applicant pool and their stories). Different schools prioritize different factors, some focus heavily on GMAT/GRE, while others emphasize leadership and impact. Applying strategically across a mix of schools increases your chances and mitigates the unpredictability of the process. However, applicants shall prepare in a way understanding that 'the key to securing interviews isn’t just volume but positioning'. A well-crafted application, that has compelling essays, strong recommendations, and a clear personal brand ensures you stand out early, reducing the risk of being overlooked in the initial screening. Schools may/may not move quickly through pre-interview evaluations, so making your profile memorable from the start is essential.
