Tab 1 gives the details of parking space in terms of departure, accumulation and arrivals.
Departure and arrivals are cumulative, that is the graph gives us total data at any point of time.

Q.1 Each of the following options describes a condition that occurred at least once between 5:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. on the day of the parking study. For each option, select Before 1:00 p.m. if the first such occurrence was before 1:00 p.m. Otherwise, select 1:00 p.m. or later.

Cumulative arrivals were greater than accumulation.: The line of accumulation is lower than cumulative arrivals, the moment departures start. Logically too, the first vehicle departs, the accumulation becomes one less, while the cumulative arrivals remain intact. Thus, before 1 pm, as departures start before 1pm.

Cumulative arrivals were greater than 2 times cumulative departures.: Again, when the first vehicle departs, the cumulative arrivals are already 20-30. Again, Before 1pm.

Cumulative departures were greater than accumulation.: Cumulative departure line crosses accumulation at 2pm. Hence after 1pm

Q.2 If the detection system had been in operation on the day of the parking study, at which one of the following times would a Red Alert have been in effect?
Red alert happens when accumulation is 1000 and more. We can see that the time this happens is from 08:00am to slightly after 03:00pm. Hence 03:00pm is the answer.

arkaja11, before 1 pm means anytime from early morning till 1 pm.

I don't think that answers for Q1 is correct:

It should be: YES NO NO.

For second sentence, at 1 PM, accumulation = 1100-1200, cumulative arrivals = 2100-2200 . It doesn't look clear from the graph whether "Cumulative arrivals were greater than 2 times cumulative departures"

Also the question is getting repeated here: https://gmatclub.com/forum/city-x-condu ... 30496.html
chetan2u if you could delete one.
"Cumulative arrivals were greater than 2 times cumulative departures."
Let's evaluate wheather this occured for the first time before 1 pm or not as that is what is asked of us.

For example at 12 :00 noon

Cumulative departures : between 500 and 1000

Cumulative arrivals : 2000

Hence defenitely Cumulative arrivals were greater than 2 times cumulative departures at 12 noon

Answer: Before 1 pm.

Q1- Each of the following options describes a condition that occurred at least once between 5:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. on the day of the parking study.
For each option, select Before 1:00 p.m. if the first such occurrence was before 1:00 p.m. Otherwise, select 1:00 p.m. or later.

We need to look at when "The first such occurrence" for the given options happens. Before 1:00 PM OR After 1:00 PM

P-1) Cumulative arrivals were greater than accumulation. There are multiple points before 1:00 PM for which CA > Accu

P-2) CA> 2*CD : before 1:00 PM

P-3) CD > Accu : After 1:00 PM

Hope this helps

But aren't the cumulative arrivals more than the accumulation at almost all times? (maybe barring 5am to 7am, when it is difficult to separate the two)?

Hi Souravi99,

Cumulative arrival is >= accumulation.

Cumulative arrival = accumulation as long as no vehicle departs. For instance, if 20 cars have arrived into the parking lot, and none have departed, then the "accumulation" is also 20.

But when even one car departs,

-> Cumulative arrival: 20
-> Cumulative departure: 1
-> Accumulation: 20-1 = 19 (Arrival>accumulation)

So,
Cumulative arrival is >= accumulation.

What we need to worry about is -> Does the first instance when Cumulative arrival is > accumulation happen before 1 PM?

In this case, YES. This is clear from the graph.

When would the answer have been NO?

If there was no departure that occurred before 1 PM. Imagine a situation where the first vehicle to depart did so at 2 PM. Then, till 1 PM, whatever has arrived has still not departed. Hence, it would be "accumulated".

Hope this helps.
