GMATNinja , say we were down to 2 options and were to negate option A and D

A) The new system if implemented, would NOT increase the number of customers.

D) The shop DOES NOT make a substantial profit from pastries and other food bought by the coffee drinkers.

How would we decide, based no negation, which option is better?

It's important NOT to apply the negation test to anything but assumption questions. It works for assumptions, because an assumption is an unstated idea that is NECESSARY for the argument to make sense. Strengthens don't have that constraint. They are often new ideas that are in no way necessary; they just make the conclusion seem more likely. We could say that in this argument, the owner is ASSUMING that the financial gains will outweigh any losses from underpayment. (If we negated THAT, they'd be at a loss and the argument would fail.) Answer choice D suggests that the gains may indeed exceed the losses (since more customers will probably mean more pastry sales), but it isn't needed. The plan doesn't specifically rely on pastries, which were never mentioned in the argument. Answer choice A addresses something the owner already suggested, but gives us no new information about whether the new customers would pay well, so it doesn't really strengthen the argument.

Pre-think: Assume that both the statements (owner and manager) are true. Owner says honour system for coffee —> pay fair value —> likely to have more customers —> more profits.
Manager says people will cheat —> loss in coffee —> less profits.
So, manager has nullified one point (honour system) of the owner, but the other point (more customers) remain true.
If both the owner and the manager are correct, we need SOMETHING ELSE, which will increase profits. And this thing should make use of the reasoning given by owner - more people.

I'm not so sure about this question. I chose B, as it directly affects the cost of the coffee- lower costs=more profit, assuming revenue stays the same (if customers pay the same or more, as the manager describes, profits will increase).

Choice (D) addresses the manager's concern by saying, "Yes, we might lose some money on coffee, but by increasing the total number of customers, we will increase the amount of food/pastries that we sell. In the paragraph the increase of the total of customer is mentioned first, then the honor system -> This makes me think the number of customer will increase no matter there is a honor system or not

Let's start by breaking down the first paragraph sentence by sentence:

  • In the first sentence, the coffee shop owner discusses one consequence of selling coffee with "no formal charge" -- namely, that "a larger number of customers will pay at least the fair market value."
  • In the second sentence, the coffee shop owner mentions another consequence of selling coffee with "no formal charge" -- some people will pay more than fair market value.
  • In the third sentence, the owner points out a third consequence of selling coffee with "no formal charge" -- that is, the total number of customers is likely to increase.
  • In the last line, the owner suggests that using an honor systems (i.e. a system with "no formal charge" for coffee), will lead to an increase in net cash flow.

You're absolutely correct that the author uses the phrase "honor system" after stating that it will lead to an increase in total number of customers. However, the overall structure of the argument helps clarify the owner's logic -- the honor system, where people pay in the absence of a "formal charge," will ultimately lead to an increase in customers, which will in turn result in an increase in net cash flow.

support required for: improve our net cash flow by implementing an honour system in which customers pay what they wish for coffee by depositing money in a can.

my PRECISE statement: improve net cash flow, honor system, coffee. cash flow should be increased because of coffee only. this is what i think.

If i am precise here, then D is wrong.

You should always be precise. :)

Pay close attention to the language you used and compare it to the language in the argument. The official text never uses the phrase, "coffee only." Rather, according to the coffee shop owner, the honor system plan seems to offer the following benefits:

  • A large number of customers will pay at least fair market value for their coffee
  • Some will pay more than fair market value
  • More customers will come

If more customers come in response to the new plan, and these new customers buy lots of stuff beyond coffee, that still means the plan worked, right? Put another way, you interpreted the argument to mean that the shop could only increase revenue by selling more coffee.

But the actual argument is that they're going to increase revenue by implementing the honor system plan. Any revenue increase that results is a validation of the plan, whether the revenue is coming from coffee or yummy baked goods. Simple as that.

Owner Conclusion: Net Cashflow will rise as a result of increased customer base (mentioned in the STEM) when customers pay what they wish, assuming that a large number of customers will pay at least Fair Market Value for a cup of coffee.

A) Customers are already increasing, with or without the Plan - Reject A

B) No mention of cost breakdown or inventories in the STEM- Out of Scope. Reject B

C) Staying in the coffee shop for a long time doesn’t really mean more cash flow (remember the conclusion) - Reject C

D) Can help in more cash flow if customers pay for other stuff. Assuming FMV for coffee is paid.

Hold D

E) Doesn’t say about the success of this plan. Just because others don’t have it doesn’t mean that it’ll generate more cash for the shop in question.
