Completed solving OG 2020, What next?

Question

Hi All,

I studied GMAT theory from Youtube, Gmatclub and other free resources and solved OG 2020 completely. Below is my accuracy from the error log.

Quant:
 DS - 67%
 PS - 75 %
Verbal
 CR - 64%
 RC - 73%
 SC - 63 %

What should I do next to improve my accuracy?

I have given 2 mock tests, Started my prep with GMATprep 1st mock and scored 540 (Q36, V28). Gave another mock test yesterday from Jamboree and scored 650 (Q46, V32).

My doubts
1. I know GMAT is adaptive, but what is a broad accuracy level required in exam to score 730+ on GMAT?
2. Which section should I focus more on?

accuracy doesn't define score because we don't know the difficulty level of the questions you attempted. You have to achieve 95%+ accuracy for easy (500-600 score) questions at least to be able to think 710+
Best way to judge your current position is to give the free GMAT adaptive test by the test makers, GMAC. that should accurately tell you current position.
Looking at what you've shared, its difficult to conclude but I think you might need to improve your accuracy.

Before I can offer you the specific advice that you’re looking for, it would help if you could provide a bit more information on how you've been studying and your goals:

1) How long have you studied? How many hours do you typically study each week?
2) Have you used any set study materials besides the OG (re: other books, courses, etc.)? 
3) On what dates (or approximate dates) did you take EACH of your CATs/mocks?
4) When are you planning to apply to Business School and what Schools are you planning to apply to?

To get 730 a potential score combo that can get you there is a Q50 V38. (This is likely on the higher range of the combo, though).

I think the further course of action depends on your target score. If you are happy with your mock scores then you should just focus a bit more on areas in Sentence correction where you are getting most wrongs and then move to CR section. With 3 points improvement you should see a bump of 20-30 points in overall score.

Ideally you should revisit all the questions where you had time trouble, you guessed and the ones you got wrong. For additional practice official Review books are great place if you have time in hand. And then move on to mock tests to get time management right.

Hi EMPOWERgmatRichC,

1) I have studied for 2.5 months, Around 2 hours a day 
2) Besides OG and free material available on GMATClub, I have referred Jamboree videos borrowed from a friend
3) I took 1st mock test (GMATPrep) without any study in start of April. I took 2nd mock (Jamboree) 10 days back 
4) I was planning to apply this year if I meet my target score of 730+ since my undergrad GPA is very low and I come from highly represented demographic. My post-MBA goal is to get into product management from current Tech consulting role. Hence I am targeting following schools.

Dream: Haas, Sloan
Target: NYU tech MBA, Cornell Tech MBA, ISB
Safe: Foster

I haven't researched schools extensively, I'll be happy to share the profile as DM to get further suggestions

To start, since you are interested in some highly-competitive Schools, you would likely find it beneficial to speak with an Admissions Expert about your overall profile and plans. Those Experts should be able to answer your Admissions questions and help define the specific areas of your profile that could use some improvement. There's a Forum full of those Experts here:

The scoring algorithm on the Official GMAT is far more complicated than most people realize. Since that algorithm is proprietary, no GMAT company has an exact match for it, thus CAT scores can vary a bit based on the 'biases' involved in their respective designs. While the most realistic CATs available are the 6 from GMAC, retaking a CAT that you've already taken is NOT a realistic way to assess your skills - since you will likely see some 'repeat' questions that you have already faced. Unfortunately, seeing even a couple of repeats can 'throw off' the Scoring Algorithm and impact your pacing, energy levels, fatigue, etc. (meaning that they would likely all appear to be better than they actually are). Thankfully, the CATs from Kaplan, MGMAT and Veritas are all 'close enough' to the real thing that they will provide you with a relatively realistic score assessment (assuming that you correctly take the CAT in a realistic fashion that matches the parameters that you will face when you take the Official GMAT) - so you can use any NEW CATs from any of those sources next.

Since we have just these 2 CAT results, it's tough to say for sure how accurate this most recent result is (as you may have gotten a bit lucky or unlucky when you took it). As such, I suggest that you study/review for the next few days, then take a NEW CAT from one of the sources I mentioned (above). Make sure to take it in a realistic fashion that matches-up with what you will face when you take the Official GMAT (take the FULL CAT - with the Essay and IR sections, at the same time of day as when you'll take the Official GMAT, if you will be at a Test Facility, then wear a face mask, etc.). Once you have that Score, you should post back here (or you can feel free to PM me directly) and we can discuss the results and how you might best proceed with your studies.

I am planning on reviewing the material again and solving more questions on GMATClub for another couple weeks. After the review, I plan to take next official mock test.

Yes, Verbal is a problem. specially Sentence Correction. Hence I've purchased Manhattan "All the Verbal" guide for practice. i am solving 2 RC, 5 CR and 15 SC questions daily from GMATClub.

Clearly, you’ve done a ton of work at this point. But you’re probably about 10% of the way through the work that can be done out of the OG. For example, you know that word problem with the sandwiches and “m” students? How do you solve that again? Can you explain it to me please?

Actually, don’t. My point: you can now turn around and learn to teach everything out of the official guide. Because once you can teach all of that stuff, the day of the test will be far easier than you can imagine.
