The tree sap has always been there even before. Only after its discovery has it been possible to anticipate ……. So, ‘which’ should logically skip over the sap and refer to the discovery. A case of an exception to the pronoun touch rule, in which an essential prepositional modifier is part of the main noun and can be ignored for pronoun purposes.
