KAPLAN OFFICIAL EXPLANATION

(D)

Step 1: Read the Original Sentence Carefully, Looking for Errors

The opening clause of the sentence is a modifying phrase, so what comes after the comma must be the noun that phrase modifies. The modifier describes something that consists of “dreamscapes,” but the underlined segment begins with the name of a person, H. R. Giger. Instead, it should begin with Giger’s artwork.
Note that the underlined segment ends with a verb; this is an indication that there may be a verb-tense or subject-verb agreement error. The singular verb “was” agrees with the singular subject “artwork,” and since the verb is used to describe an event that happened in the past (artwork used in a 1979 movie), the past tense is appropriate.

Step 2: Scan and Group the Answer Choices

There’s a 3-2 split between (B), (D), and (E), which start with “the artwork of H. R. Giger,” and (A) and (C), which start with “H. R. Giger.”

Step 3: Eliminate Choices Until Only One Remains

Eliminate (A) and (C), which both contain the modification error you initially spotted. (C) also contains another error; it incorrectly changes the verb at the end of the underlined segment to the present tense. (B), (D), and (E) all fix the modification error, so check to see which one does so without introducing other issues.

A vertical scan of the last word shows that (B) introduces a verb tense error with the present tense “is” at the end, so it can be eliminated. (E) changes “inspires” to “inspired,” which changes the meaning of the sentence. While the art was used as inspiration for a movie in the past, the sentence describes people who view the artwork, which exists in the present. Therefore, the present tense is appropriate here. (D) is thus correct. Confirm by reading it into the sentence:

Consisting of surreal nightmarish dreamscapes, the art workof H. R. Giger often inspires feelings of unease and dread in those who view it,and these reactions are why it was chosen as the basis for the design of the title creature in the 1979 horror movie Alien.

Ans: D

A. H. R. Giger created artwork that often inspires feelings of unease and dread in those who view it, and these reactions are why it was; Consisting of surreal, nightmarish dreamscapes incorrectly modifies H.R. Giger

B. the artworkof H. R. Giger often inspires feelings of unease and dread in those who view it,and these reactions are why it is; it corrects the modifier error from option A, but there is a verb tense issue with - it is - action to chose this artwork is complete and simple past tense would be appropriate here

C. H. R. Gigercreated artwork that often inspired feelings of unease and dread in those who view it, and these reactions are why it is; modifier error same as option A, verb tense error same as option B

D. the artworkof H. R. Giger often inspires feelings of unease and dread in those who view it,and these reactions are why it was; correct choice

E. the artworkof H. R. Giger often inspired feelings of unease and dread in those who view it,and these reactions are why it was; corrects modifier issue and verb tense is also correct, but there is change in meaning in saying artwork inspired some feelings, suggesting that it no longer inspires those feelings now

D

The option E says inspired feelings which makes it inaccurate for the tense.

Splits
1. Modifier placement issue : A and C gone. HR Giger can't consist of surreal nightmarish dreamscapes.
2. Verb tense : explained below

E - "inspired" --- Wrong. Need simple present here. Since the inspiration continues in present as well.
B - "it is" -- the artwork was chosen in the past as is indicated by the sentence giving a specific year reference.

D is our winner. No issues there.

A. H. R. Giger created artwork that often inspires feelings of unease and dread in those who view it, and these reactions are why it was ---- wrong modification. HRG should not come after the comma; his artwork should come

B. the artworkof H. R. Giger often inspires feelings of unease and dread in those who view it, and these reactions are why it is - use of it’ is’ is wrong for something that happened in 1979

C. H. R. Gigercreated artwork that often inspired feelings of unease and dread in those who view it, and these reactions are why it is – 1. Same modification error as in A. 2. Inspired may indicate that it inspired only in the past. The truth is that even today people are inspired.

D. the artworkof H. R. Giger often inspires feelings of unease and dread in those who view it, and these reactions are why it was --- inspires is correct. This must be the correct choice

E. the artworkof H. R. Giger often inspired feelings of unease and dread in those who view it, and these reactions are why it was -- inspired is wrong; please read it along with ‘who view’, which is in the present tense.

But generally speaking, isn’t ‘the reason why redundant?. ‘The reason that’ is said to be the correct version. The author may know better.

“it” seems ok for pronoun – only “artwork” applies here; but “it is chosen” (means now) for the 1979 is incorrect – out

often inspired…in those who VIEW (not viewed) it – parallelism issue
