Dear All,

I see numerous advertisements from Cornell Johnson for MBA. Is it common for the colleges to spend so much on advertisements? Or it is that Cornell Johnson is trying to improve its ranking and hence such a big investment?

Thanks,

Schools don't improve their ranking by advertising. But yes, some schools definitely want to get their name out there. And all schools (yes, even HBS) spend some money on marketing in one place or another.

More advertisements lead to more applicants, reducing down the acceptance rate. Also advertisements may help the school attract better candidates. As a result, college may improve its rankings.

I would also consider whether this is a regional thing as well. If you are in the New York area, you may be seeing a disproportionate amount of ads, but yes most schools, especially for their PT programs in heavy commercial areas.

Sadly, education has become a lucrative business; it is no more for knowledge seekers.
