I was hoping that you could evaluate my profile and help me position myself with my application for Haas Evening & Weekend MBA program.
GMAT: 730 (Q 50, V 38, AWA 4.0) + 690 (Q 50, V 32, AWA 4.5)
BS: GPA 86/100, chemistry, top school in China
MS: GPA 3.2/4.0, chemistry, average US school
Work Exp:
-5 years as a research associate in drug discovery for pharmaceutical/biotech companies. Main responsibility is to synthesize drug candidates. Drove a cancer drug candidate to development. Promoted once to senior research associate. 2 papers and 3 patents.
-But never had a subordinate.
Extracurricular:
-Co-founded a scientific database company in China
-Part-time sales associate on weekend computer shows
-President of Chinese Student Association at graduate school
-Taught and supervised undergrads in chemistry lab course
-Captain of Intramural Basketball Team at undergrad school
Community Service:
Volunteer, then director of volunteer and director of business development at a non-profit organization serving local Chinese community
Short Term: A position in Business Development in a pharmaceutical/biotech company
Long Term: Start a consulting company serving US firms that plan to enter into biotech industry in China
Why MBA: to beef up the fundamentals of management and the latest theories and best practices in business to prepare for the long term goal

Your profile looks good. Obviously, the lack of leadership in your job is a weakness, but you compensate fairly well outside of work. Not sure when you're applying, but if there's time to beef up the leadership *in any aspect of your life* I would do so.
In terms of positioning, in your essays I would emphasize leadership stories (don't let them put in the 'just a lab researcher' box). Maybe talk about the 'informal leadership' (which can include 'initiative,' 'consensus-building,' and 'managing up') you had to show during the cancer drug project. Your community organization directorship roles, your extracurricular presidency in grad school, and your entrepreneurial experience in China seem like the most promising non-work leadership stories to me. (I discuss emphasizing leadership in chapter 3 of my new book.)
