Graduated from a top 2 Canadian business school and now have 8 years of progressive experience in banking and healthcare with a CPA to go along with it.

Post-MBA, the plan is to transition into brand management within the healthcare or technology industry or move into a senior management role in the healthcare industry

Congrats on your profile!
CFA should make you a strong candidate for a score waiver. I would maybe consider touching on your GPA in the optional essay but I’m not sure if you’re using it for anything else....

It seems like it would be a good candidate for an evening program but being in Canada it probably doesn’t work very well.

I would strongly suggest to have them defined and very specific goal in your application than essays and not keeping it open ended or flexible. At least in the application. You can do whatever you want on your own but it will make you stronger in the application to the admissions committee if you have a very specific call Down to the company you want to work at.

Since you don’t have a test score, that’s one less date point for you and evaluation of your profile by the admissions so they will look at your work experience very closely specifically looking at promotions and compensation. Keep that in mind.

I like that you were stretching your applications into multiple rounds. There is valuable experience you will get after round one and so it would help you with your round two applications..

Hi, applying into multiple rounds does not require you to land the deposit in every decision release?
User avatar
17 Sep 2024, 21:49
Not in every round. Unless R2 performs much better with a scholarship.

But yes, if you get admitted in round one to a great program, you will have to make a decision whether to make a deposit or let it go before hearing the results of the second round but it looks like the schools distributed in the way that round two is more of a safety along with Johnson being an opportunistic application which would be worth letting go of a potential admit to UNC or Owen.

Hi ksc07
Since you are applying with a waiver, ensure you build a strong narrative around your work experience. With 8 years of experience, I am sure you will have a lot to highlight. Be it impact or leadership skills or major projects that you were a part of or even if you have global experience. Your GPA also looks a bit on the lower end for the schools you are applying to, thus ensure other aspects are strong- LORs, essays.
Good Luck!

Hi dhruvipopat22,

Vashi here from LilacBuds.

You have a well rounded profile, with good GPA and extensive Marketing internship experience across multiple companies. A good GMAT score will be very crucial to converting both the UK schools. Your post MiM goals/ job roles must align with your school choice. Strong essays and recommendations will be a must to crack these schools. Write essays describing your unique experiences and aspirations that will allow the adcoms to see you better and your uniqueness.

We at LilacBuds would love to assist you and would therefore request more details about your profile. You can connect with our team for a detailed profile analysis at https://lilacbuds.com/services/mim-mif-consultant or drop a message on +91 84483 35484.

You can also mail your CV at [email protected] for a detailed profile evaluation.

Hoping to hear from you.

1 year in software consulting followed by 5 more years as a software engineer in a late-stage marketing startup. I was promoted to senior software engineer, then later given the role of team lead over 5-8 software engineers (senior software engineer is still my title). Hoping to start a business after graduation in tech or tech consulting, but would be open to typical tech/consulting positions if I liked the domain/culture/etc. I'm also applying exclusively to Ross in R1 and hope to stay in Southeast Michigan after graduation.

I have solid professional accomplishments, a good LOR from a University of Michigan alumni (not Ross affiliated), and high quality essays. Significant extra-curricular activities and accomplishments, but none involving direct leadership such as serving on boards, etc.

Wow. You have a fantastic GMAT score for a domestic applicant. Your application looks solid. I am not sure if you covered your GPA in an optional essay - that could be something to touch on (my big value add here). However, even if you did not, your GMAT should cover that up and the concerns, but the usually recommended path is to give them a good excuse for the sub 3.3 GPA or 3.4 in Ross's case.

Applying exclusively to Ross is fine but there are trade offs you are making by not applying to other programs. There is value in applying to multiple programs. E.g. what if Broad gives you full ride? What if Fuqua does? or Kellogg admits you? Are those attractive potentially? I do think chances of you making through the process are good. I would not worry too much about the interview - that's not a deciding factor but if you are looking at Consulting as your target industry you want to come off polished in the interview and prep and practice.

Thank you for the feedback!!

I wasn't sure if my GPA was low enough to justify mentioning it in the optional essay, but I decided to mention it anyway. Your feedback makes me glad that I mentioned it!

I go back and forth on whether or not to apply to other programs. I already live in Ann Arbor and really want to stay here, and I also liked the Ross program significantly more than other programs I've researched (even higher ranked programs feel less appealing to me). At the same time, it would be a tough choice between paying full/most tuition at Ross vs. full ride at Fuqua, etc. The rational part of my brain agrees with you and says I should try to apply to 2-3 more schools in R1, but the emotional side of my brain kind of wants to put all my eggs in Ross's basket. I think I'm leaning towards just Ross in R1 and then possibly applying to other programs in R2 if Ross doesn't work out, but I'm aware that's a very emotional action plan to take. It's a conundrum!

Thanks again!

It does not hurt to mention it. They would see it anyway. It has impact on their average, so they would have to contend with that (it has an impact on the rankings).

Totally hear you about Ross. Hope you were able to communicate that to the AdCom as well in the essays. I mean I also applied to 1 school (I tell people it was a mistake though ) but it worked out with 1 egg in 1 basket.

Another play/argument for multiple apps could be to get a scholarship match but Ross is not known for matching or negotiating scholarships unfortunately. With other programs If you get an admit with $$ at Fuqua, you could try to match or at least ask something but Ross is pretty tight after they release decisions and scholarships and usually have no spare funds to spread.

So, I think 1 application is fine though definitely unconventional.

Do consider improving your GMAT score to a level that is 20–30 points above the average of the school you apply to. This is a hygiene requirement from an Indian male (tough luck, I know).

I am Priyanka, Client Manager at ARINGO. Speaking about your profile, your GMAT score is decent for the schools you are targeting; however, your GPA looks on the lower end. But this can be compensated by your CA certification. Since you are targeting for most schools in R2, if possible, go for a retake to improve your score by around 30 points, it would make a huge difference.

Your extensive work experience will let you demonstrate your leadership skills to the adcoms. One more thing the adcoms look for in an application is the impact created at previous workplaces, try to statistically demonstrate impact wherever you can. Top programs like Haas, Booth, Columbia, and Ross will value your deep finance background and the leadership skills you've demonstrated throughout your career.

What makes your profile a bit unique is the combination of buy-side and consulting experience, which gives you a rare perspective on both the technical and strategic aspects of finance. This dual skill set will resonate well with your post-MBA goal of continuing in asset management. I would also recommend you add a few safe schools to your list (Kenan-Flagler, Jones, McDonough).

I’d love to learn more about your journey. FEEL FREE TO CONNECT TO FOR A FREE DETAILED PROFILE ANALYSIS.

Hey, athreya1205

Your GMAT score and GPA may pose some hurdles, but don't let that discourage your extensive experience in finance and the certifications you've earned are powerful assets. In your essays, focus on telling your personal story. Talk about your accomplishments and why an MBA makes sense for you now. Highlight what makes your journey special. Strong recommendation letters will further strengthen your case. Passing CFA Level 1 isn't just a checkbox on your resume it's a reflection of your dedication and passion for finance, and it sets you up well not only for your MBA but also for the next steps in your career.

Feel free to schedule a call with us here for an in-depth profile evaluation.

After 5 years in Software Engineering (3 before postgrad and 2 after), I want to gain expertise in the business side of the equation. After an MBA, I plan to join a consulting firm to gain exposure to diverse business challenges and strategies. In the long term, I plan to expand the operations of our family business in software products.

I am currently targetting the US east cost schools in Top 15.
I have a Master's degree from one of the top engineering colleges in India with a CGPA of 3.76.

Awesome results and great that you have a strong CGPA as well as a great score - I think as long as you are not fumbling anything, you will get admits.
Scholarships will be a bit of a question. Have you joined Forte (not sure how much it is of value) but I have seen some Scholarship options/etc. but not sure if the time has passed already for those.

Either way good luck - hopefully you won't need it 😇

Strong profile by the way! The Expat, staying in the same industry, strong experience, and women-power.
FYI - Some schools have started accepting updated scores - just saw the policy from Haas for example so taking the GMAT again may help make you more competitive, esp if you can hit the average for the schools and not be dragging their average down with your score as they would likely like to take you.

P.S. Include some of client-facing, leadership, and presentation examples if you can in your applications.
