Did B.Tech. in Computer Science and Engineering from Tier 2 university in India. Right after my undergrad, joined a top tech company (currently 2nd in world by market cap) in Digital consulting space and then internally moved up into Software Engineering.

I want to grow my career in technology itself, but more on business and customer facing roles. That's why after my undergrad I want to work as a Product manager.

Hi. Great profile! Awesome to have strong brands on your resume and sticking with the job.
Just a quick question - you marked your post MBA goal as Consulting? It should be Tech PM type of thing?

Good luck with the results from Kellogg and Tepper! I would also recommend Foster for R2 for Tech PM. It is in Seattle, so you will walk into a job sooner or later ;-)

Thanks bb for the quick reply. Big fan of yours btw :) . To your question, I must have selected "Consulting" by mistake. Corrected it now. Can you also share any insights on the other schools that I am planning to apply with respect to my profile and goal. Texas mccombs and Duke Fuqua?

Thank you. Happy to help with your way I can.

McCombs and Fuqua were quite good for tech before the bottom fell out from the tech last year 😬

You’ll see big declines and tech recruiting across many business schools but before this calamity, those were pretty good choices for tech. Ross as well potentially….

Hi! Given your profile I would consider Tepper and Foster to be best options for you in the safe category. However, since you are so clear about your post mba PM goals, I suggest you also check out some other one year programs that can get you into PM roles in big tech will lower opportunity cost. Tepper’s MSPM program is one but there are several others. Do note that the job market is not at its best and therefore targeted programs with strong tech pipelines can be better options than doing a FT MBA from just any college.
It’s honestly very hard to comment on the odds for Duke, as it depends on how you strategise and present your story coming from an over represented pool. Same for the other aspirational schools. There will be plenty of profiles with better gmat scores and similar professional experience, therefore you must meticulously strategize how you articulate your narrative and showcase your experiences.

Best wishes

Hi there! Thank you so much - my interview experience was a mix actually. My 1st interviewer played a bit of a tough role, asking lots of counter questions apart from the usual 'Why INSEAD, Why MBA now?' questions. The 2nd interviewer was very smooth and conversational, felt like a warm discussion. If you need a list of all the questions asked during my 1st interview let me know your ID and I shall share!

4.5 years of work experience mainly in conducting financial research. 1 year as a equity research analyst, 1 year experience of working with family business, 2.5 years experience working with a MNC as a Research Analyst, in a client facing role. Not been promoted in any of my previous roles but my current role (Research Analyst) has seen a low of growth in responsibilities in the last 1 year. Led two student club during my Masters - one as the Deputy club head and one as the Main Club Head. Also organized a high grossing event for college's annual festival. Have provided 2-3 mos. of pro bono consulting to two different NGOs last year. Volunteered with NGOs as an Accountant while doing my undergrad. Also have 1.5 years of international experience since I was pursuing a post graduate diploma in Economics in Scotland. Recently also attended a conference on behaioral economics, in Prague. Currently working on developing one main side hustle, based in providing data and consulting services. Hobbies include stop motion movie making, which I post on my YouTube channel which has a modest following.

Hi. Great profile. Not great GMAT score… but my guess you know. I just hate for a score to hold somebody up. Have you given your best to the GMAT? Have you considered potentially GRE? We have seen greater success with low Jerry scores… seems admissions are willing to close their eyes on those but not on the GMAT 🥴

the most impactful things are the hardest to change but if you can eek out a promotion, expansion of responsibilities or even promise of a promotion, those are BIG value adds. You can also try the GRE. Seen a person admitted to Darden with a 315 or smth like that the other day here... GRE seems a lot more forgiveable from the adcom perspective.

You have a wonderful profile! Make sure to highlight the following in your SOP -
Your varied experience
Your International Exposure (Prague)
Your Volunteering experience
Lastly, your post study goals. It would be important to know what is it that you seek from the university and align it with your Vision.

Since you're looking out for Internet & neew media, even CMU Tepper would. be a good University choice!

Feel free to reach out to me at contact@involve-consulting.com if you need help with your SOPs, Application or Interviews!

I launched a tech startup straight out of college, targeting a notably inefficient sector in India. The journey from initial funding to achieving profitability, and ultimately being acquired by a top American competitor for a decent valuation, was rewarding. Also, landed me a place in Forbes Asia 30 Under 30. After two years of leading significant markets post-acquisition, I am now contemplating a new venture in PropTech, while also considering enhancing my skills with an MBA.

@Hardattemp -
Congratulations on your Startup & being a part. of Forbes 30 under 30! It is indeed a notable achievement.
I would like to highlight a few points here -
1. As you are aware, getting into Harvard has been competitive even for the best of the best! And hence demonstrating a clear understanding of why you would need an MBA after your present journey would be very important. It would also be important to showcase any. other achievements during your journey and explain your story pretty well!
2. Point 1 also needs to be clearly aligned with what you're looking for as your future goal and how it would be relevant to pursue an MBA in this context.
3. You would have to demonstrate and elaborate on the nature of your startup and what is the impact it has created. A social angle to the startup would also be helpful in demonstrating your commitment not only to profits but to society as a whole.
4. You would ofcourse need to score a brilliant score in GMAT, so all the best for your attempt!
5. Lastly, you could also target other schools -Columbia,Wharton, MIT Sloan, Chicago Booth

Hi,
Your journey from launching a startup to acquisition is super strong. If your real estate startup involved shaking up old ways, bringing innovation in an inefficient sector, changing consumer habits etc- then it will make for some solid essay stories.
While other things look great in the short description you have given, round 3 applications will definitely not be competitive. You may as well wait a year in that case and apply R1 next year, although given your higher work experience, it will be best for you to shoot some applications in R2 this year. Also, if you wish to be in the real estate sector post MBA, you should also consider applying to programs that focus on the sector (CBS and Stern come to mind).

29M, Latin American, 690 GMAT

Hello,

I am a Peruvian applying for Round 2:

* GMAT: 690 (Q:47|V:38|IR:8)
* Undergrad: Management degree from top college in my country, GPA 3.9, top 10% of class.
* First-generation college student
* Work Experience: 7 years work experience in corporate finance/corporate development. Did investment banking for 1 year and then transitioned to corporate finance in the industrial/mining/energy sectors. Currently, I am working in an energy company doing M&A and developing renewable energy projects. In the two years since I joined, my company tripled its installed capacity through big M&A acquisition and the completion of a big solar project, in which I had a leading role.
* EC: After college I was a teaching assistant for 2 years at my university, and during COVID (2020-2022) I joined a local NGO that provided advisory to SMEs in my country.
* My goal after MBA is to continue in the energy sector but relocate to Europe or US join a big energy company or PE fund focused on renewables.

Hello! I'm seeking some guidance and feedback on my profile:

Nationality/Age: Chinese, 26 years old
Education: Bachelor of Arts in Arabic Language and Literature from Shanghai International Studies University (SISU). GPA: 3.24
GMAT Scores: 640 (Q47 V32) and 640 (Q48 V31). Due to a tight work schedule, I couldn't improve my score further.
Work Experience: Nearly 4 years

Governmental Relations and Legal Affairs Manager at a leading Chinese oilfield services company. Location: Baghdad (Iraq)/Dubai. Duration: ~2.5 years. Responsibilities: Stakeholder relations, key account management, PR, and compliance.

Business Development Manager at a top Chinese TMT company. Location: Dubai, with business trips across the GCC and Africa. Duration: ~1.5 years. Responsibilities: Strategy planning, regional compliance, business analysis, and key account management.

Other Activities:

Volunteering, including recent involvement in Tarahum for Gaza and cultural exchange programs.
Post-MBA Goals: Transition into Consulting/Corporate Strategy. Plan to work in Canada to obtain PR, followed by a return to the Middle East, leveraging my Arabic language skills and regional experience.

MBA Applications:

Applied to Rotman, Schulich, DeGroote, and RSM.
Received offers from Schulich/RSM with scholarships. Surprised given my lower GPA/GMAT, but Admissions Officers seemed particularly interested in my work experience in Iraq.
Awaiting decisions from Rotman/DeGroote (Co-op program).
I would greatly appreciate any advice on which program might be the best fit for my career goals. Thank you in advance!

Wow! Awesome achievements on your resume and a good fit to continue in your career track! I guess it is more finance than accounting but maybe our drop downs don't have good enough options for the type of finance... sorry, will improve!

You can consider Sloan as well as well or Johnson on the safer side if you are looking for those options. They are a poor mans' Columbia ... and by a poor man I mean a reach guy with a scholarship 😂

I had the exact thought about accounting background staying in accounting - so I hope it is to do with the options presented in the drop down menu and not your real career goals. Because that made me wonder, why do you want to do an MBA at all.
Your profile is great otherwise. the achievements and promotion are noteworthy and being active in the substantial fund raising add a solid dimension to your profile. Any extra curricular activities?
Don't know what your goals are but I'd swap Fuqua with Tuck, Cornell or Stern given goals around finance.

Thanks bb & Namita!

Sorry for not being specific with my goals. I'm currently in middle management in a FMCG Growth space startup. My skillset in terms of making strategic decisions + contributing to the long term vision of the organization needs improvement.

I aim to be the CFO of leading B2C startup in South East Asia in the next 10 years, and I intend to stay in the corporate finance space. I believe an MBA from a top notch school will provide me the impetus to make this change. Thanks again!

I am applying to fuqua, Ross, Kellogg, yale. I am hearing from everyone that for an Indian female this list is too ambitious. I have some decent eca, nothing spectacular would appreciate if someone could give a profile review and a list of target and stretch colleges

On the surface, your profile looks good for the programs you have mentioned. Bschools look for good acads+ professional achievements and career progress + impact outside of work through ECAs - you seem to have these ingredients.

That said, I wouldn't be able to comment very specifically as I would need to get into the details for making further evaluation. Feel free to share your resume at contact@mbadecoder.com and schedule a call with me.

Big 4 to Big 3. Love it 👍
Awesome job on getting the Booth and Johnson interviews! Good schools choices! I see you are hanging towards Finance. That's a good safe move! If you are looking for more consulting schools, I just posted my data collection of the Consulting placements (this is still 2022 as latest score reports not out yet for all schools) https://gmatclub.com/forum/best-mba-pro ... 21312.html

I did my undergrad from IIT Delhi, work ex of 9 years includes 1.5 years as a founder in start-up, more than 7 years in a central bank of the country. Completed FRM certification. I have published research papers in Journals with awards and have field experience of working in a developing state in India. After my MBA I'm looking to work in consulting and then move to entrepreneurship in the long term.

Hi. You have a unique and amazing profile. I feel well-seasoned and good match for Booth. Your GRE is likely a bit on the lower side but we have seen schools be quite forgiving of that in light of work experience, and value brought to the program. Note that very unlikely to get any scholarships with that GRE.

P.S. If you are looking for consulting, HBS is not the only program per se. They do put 150 very capable people into MBB. Lots of other folks are strong in consulting including Tuck, Yale, Fuqua, and Darden. A bit more here: https://gmatclub.com/forum/best-mba-pro ... 21312.html and the good thing about consulting is that you have pretty equal chances despite the program and exactly the same pay regardless of the program. So whether you go to HBS or Fuqua, it is the same. Of course the experience, prestige, and alum networks will be somewhat different.

Good luck with applications!
-BB

I am a former National level University Athlete. Currently working as a manager in a public sector bank in India. I have 1 year of experience in the technology domain and 3 years in the public sector banking domain.

Post MBA goal is to focus on risk management or finance executive portfolios in Multinational Banks.

That’s an awesome profile. Business schools like athletes and people with strong achievements like that. You’ve definitely worked and trained really hard to be where you are.

I would recommend applying to places like Darden and Johnson and maybe Simon if you thinking about a scholarship. All of them have relationships and hissed auricle placements into investment banking. I think UNC does as well but you’ll have to check that.

Thank you so much for the encouraging words @bb. I have applied to Simon in Round 1 and am waiting for the decision. Darden and Cornell I will be applying to, but with IE could you share some info whether it would be worth joining as a non-local with regard to job prospects.

Scholarship is very crucial for me to pursue my MBA as I have dependents. Due to this fact I've not applied to many colleges as I felt my GMAT score could handicap me.
If you could shed light on the difference between US and Europe job market for indian immigrants, it would be a huge help. Thanks again.

Hi. I am not super familiar with Europe, so I may not be reflecting the most accurate picture (and welcome anyone from EU to correct me - please!) but looking at the US vs. Europe, I see a lot more people who have to go home after a year because they are not able to find a job or things don't work out. They do OK at home and seems salaries in India are quite attractive for people with a western MBA, but still that does not seem like a great outcome.

The reasons are in part language - you will graduate from a french or german or spanish school but the local employers need you to be fluent in the local language. This means you only can recruit in London or Amsterdam. Those are pretty limited options since everyone is doing it too.

Here are the Pros and cons:

EU
    PRO's:
      1. Visa is straightforward if you find a job
      2. Good life/work balance
      3. Living expenses can be manageable

    CON's
      1. Harder to find an MBA-level job
      2. Local language skills needed
      3. Pay is about half of that in the US

US
    PRO's
      1. Best chances of getting a job out of MBA and career change
      2. 2x pay and bonus of what you would get in EU
      3. You have 3 years to find a job and get H1B with STEM OPT

    CON's
      1. H1B is a lottery. Green card is hard
      2. Cost of living is high, esp in large cities
      3. You work your butt off in the first 3 years after MBA

Thank you so much for the information. It pretty much sums up the whole scenario. One of my cousins did his MBA from HEC Paris in 2014 and had the same thing to say about Europe.
On another note, Could you also shed some light on the MBA program at Australia like MBS and AGSM, since a lot of my friends and family there say it is a beautiful country to settle in.
I know the post MBA pay will be way less that in the US. But in the long term I feel it's a good place to immigrate to.

I am afraid my information may be dated about Australia. You may want to verify it since this predates the pandemic.

What I have heard was that Australia employers, similar to Canada employers doesn’t put much value on the MBA degree. Instead, they value your work experience and that’s what the hiring is based on so if you’re planning to change industries or don’t have a good brand on your résumé, it will be hard to find a job. And the job you will find, will not have a substantial enough pay bump but at the same time I’ve heard that the quality of life is great.

Finally, this is also dated information but I’ve heard several students mention that it’s really hard to get residency in Australia and if you’re not a resident, going to school is not going to help you a whole lot. That is a bit concerning and hopefully it has been changed so I would definitely verify.

Good luck!

Thanks again for the info. I spoke to few alumni at Melbourne business school and they said the same if I'm willing to stick to my line of work it's going to be good. I'll be applying for PR once I start my MBA. Hope things work out. I heard from relatives and friends that PR is not that hard to get as compared to other countries.
