May I ask what questions you were asked on the interview?

There were 2 interviews- Virtual Assessment, and community assessment- VA were 4 behavioral Qs, CA were 7-8 Qs by adcom (or 2nd yr student).

While they don’t have a preference for admission, we have seen a lot more scholarships offered to GMAT test-takers. This could be purely anecdotal and informal but multiple consultants have sort of confirmed the same theory that you apply with the mediocre GRE to get in or you apply with a high GMAT to get in and get a scholarship. At the same time, applying with mediocre GMAT will not work and apparently applying with a high GRE also does not yield scholarships at the same level. Well let’s hope it don’t changes this year.

Thanks for the informational insight. I plan to take the GMAT in a month. Hoping for a 730+ score to get into the competitive side of the application round. Was wondering if plan A doesn't work, GRE could be a viable option to give and apply to B schools with. Let's hope it works out

PS. There is a rumor that Jerry scores tend to under perform with scholarships. I hope that perhaps you can break that rumor with the future results!

In my experience and observations, you get paid well really only at the very top level at CPG, so I think your goal makes perfect sense as long as you can break into that space. I have seen Blackstone bringing in former MBB consultants to run some of the companies they take over. Many of them have messed up royally but if you have background in CPG, that will be a huge asset.

Forgot to add, Kellogg would be the ultimate CPG and MBB school. 🤞

I am not going to say your chance is zero, but average for SE Asia applicants hovers at 750. Even Ross and the outer edge of Top 10 have fairly high scores. P.S. If you see multiple scores, this means people took GMAT Multiple times and you can assume the higher one was used.

Great profile! And interesting combo of schools. HBS and Olin! 👀

Haas is not big into consulting (though they do place folks) - Fuqua or Darden may a better fit though of course you may have reasons to apply to Berkeley. It never hurts if you have the time and you have an app fee waiver.

If you are looking at consulting and scholarship, UNC can be a good middle ground as well as Tepper.

PS. Social and non profit tend to be VERY popular and competitive. Everyone wants these spots and social places really lack $$ to hire a lot of consultants so the spots are limited. Just setting your expectations.

I would also like mention that my gpa is on a 5.0 scale. However since undergrad I have commenced my ACCA certification and I’m two papers from certification.

Given this, Do you think I have a shot at Stanford GBS and Wharton. If yes, how do I put my best application forth. If no, what can I get done by next year to give me a chance within the pool

The HSW are super competitive. Nobody can give a good chance prediction there (with a few exceptions of candidates)

Seeing that you did not get an interview invite at HBS, I think by default it would mean you need to assume they did not like you enough vs your peers. GPA may be one consideration. Even on a 4.0 scale it is low compared to 3.5-3.6 average so you need a 333+ GRE to offset any concerns about your academic success.

PS. It is harder to apply as a startup person and that’s likely one of the considerations since anyone can say they did a startup and make a few things up while working for BCG or even McDonalds is easier to evaluate.

PS. I am just guessing here a bit. Not trying to make you paranoid, but trying to probe for weaknesses.

Hello @dddi, Ola here, also from NG. Amazing profile overall. But I think you might need to take the HBS Core to strengthen your base. The GPA is sort of low. Also not sure what your college major was. If it wasn't Quant heavy and you had a 3.19/5, then you need to proof to Adcoms that you'd cope. If your college major was Quant focused, you still need the HBS Core + higher GRE to be competitive for your selected schools. Otherwise, you could consider some T25 - T50s that would yield similar results.

To add a bit more of rumor-grade feedback. In the last year we saw many GMAT scores get $$ scholarships and few of the GRE applicants. Not sure if that’s because GRE were low or because schools did not have as much appetite to fund GRE applicants - we will see better results in 2 months but if you are counting on scholarships, may want to consider a GMAT attempt if it is feasible. Again, this is highly speculative and not corroborated by hard data per se.

Hi. Great profile and a great GRE score!

One way to improve your profile is always to show your readiness for the next step in the career. Showing that you have just a handful of steps from your current career to the goal you have set after MBA is super helpful so you would be evaluated as a "low risk of failure". So if you can show that your current job/rule already includes some Tech PM elements that's helpful to your cause.

Good communication and articulation and doing a strong interview will be important for someone looking to recruit into consulting to show that are polished and client-ready so to speak. A poor interview will definitely put a lid on your chances. So if speaking skills and presentation are not your key traits, you better start working on those.

Don't focus too much on the extra curriculars unless they have some achievements to back them up. Your key evaluations will come from your work experience and academics (scores included) and then extra things are just to qualify how distracted you were from work type of thing. That may be helpful for the Fuqua 25 things but other than that, it is an extra.

If you’re looking at consulting and MBB, there’s not really a huge priority to attend one of the top three business schools. Going to Fuqua or Darden or Tuck will probably be even more productive since those schools have such a laser focus on consulting. More over, good chance you can get a decent discount on your tuition. so I would recommend expanding your list of schools to include some other options.

Of course if you get into Harvard, you should go there but a lot of schools have very strong placements into consulting and better stats than Harvard or Stanford. Just saying 😇

If you’re looking for consulting, you want to focus on programs that have been consistently placing into consulting for years. This creates a path and the very vital connection where people from five years ago and now in senior positions within consulting companies, there are people from a few years ago who are in the starting positions and there are interns who are in their second year of business school who will help you prepare for case interviews and who will Challenge you. This ecosystem allows for this cycle of new people coming in and old people helping them to come in. Usually you’re looking at a top 15 rank.

At the same time, consulting recruiting is very much about the person and not the school when it comes to the selection process however, as mentioned above having a school with a consulting pathway will prepare you so much better to the interview and that will help you to perform better individually.

Rank wise, I would recommend focusing on the top 15 and avoiding West Coast schools as they tend to perform with on campus recruiting. in terms of the other options outside of top 15, you can consider UNC which has larger class and consulting aspirations along with MBB recruiting paths. In general you want to stick to larger programs and higher ranked ones that will give you the best chance of getting into consulting.

Congrats on the IESE interview, hope that works out for you. HEC is also a solid choice along with INSEAD and LBS, dont have too much detail into your work ex so wont be able to give an objective assessment. But fingers crossed for your applications.

I have 2 years at EY as an analyst, followed by 2 years at Deloitte as a consultant, 1 year at Morgan Stanley as an Associate and currently I am at NetApp as a team lead. All of my experience is in Cyber Security/Cyber Strategy/Tech Risk. The idea is to move into strategy consulting but in a similar area of governance. Some solid consulting and banking names and good academics would position you quite well. Profile is solid, maybe think about some solid US MBA options as well as the programs there feed quite well into the global consulting pipeline.

Which schools would you suggest in the US?

I always recommend US schools over European ones just because of the job opportunities and salaries. Ignoring everything else…

The downside of the US market is how busy you will be and working long hours during your first three years. After you establish yourself, you can pull back but in Europe, they have pretty strict rules and laws that will allow you to have a strong delineation between Work and personal time but at about a 50% discount to your salary … choose your poison 😂

Lots of options for consulting in the US. All of the top 20 schools do quite well with consulting with the Car out of the West Coast schools. The biggest ones would be Tuck, Fuqua, Darden and Tepper for the mid tier and pretty much all the Top10/M7’s.
