Hi. It is totally possible. I have known a number of people from oil and energy background who have successfully transitioned into consulting.
You can also consider UNC and Jones potentially as your options. Your GRE score should be good and may possibly eek out a small scholarship but not sure. I am not seeing much of $$ being thrown out for GRE yet.

With over eight years of experience in the Product Control and Risk functions at global financial institutions such as Bank of America, Société Générale, and Barclays, I have led projects, managed teams, and implemented automation initiatives that delivered significant time and cost efficiencies. I currently serve as a Senior Manager at Bank of America.

Academically, I am a Chartered Accountant and have completed the CFA and FRM certifications. I also hold a Bachelor’s degree in Commerce through distance education, completed alongside my demanding CA training and internship. My GPA was low due to very tough evaluation criteria of Chartered accountancy program.

In the short term, I aim to move into a strategy or operations leadership role at a global firms. My long-term goal is to launch a tech-driven startup.

I’m targeting roles in the UK, Europe, or North America.

Sorry to hear about the rejection from HEC and INSEAD, @Ambitious93. It's a difficult moment. We've put together an article on the "Major reasons why your MBA Application got dinged". It provides some understanding of mistakes you might have made. Take a moment to review it, reflect on what you can adjust, and get ready to put your best foot forward next time. You’ve got this!

We’d be happy to discuss your previous applications, evaluate your profile, and help refine your strategy. If you'd like, feel free to book a profile evaluation session.

We are hosting a Coffee Session: “GMAT Strategy & B-School Application Tips from Experts” on 25th July, 2025 | 9.00 PM IST | 11.00 AM ET. Click here to know more details.

Cheers!

If you wish, I am happy to do a ding analysis; no costs involved. My worry is that if you repeat what you did in your dinged applications, you'll get the same results in future applications. Let me know if you wish to take this offer.

• Indian, Male, 25Y

• Work Experience: 2 Years as a Software Engineer in a Manufacturing, Tech-based SME (previously a startup)
• Acads: 9/7/9 (10th/12th/Undergrad)(Undergrad CGPA->GPA = 3.9/4)
• Undergrad: B.E (Mechanical Engineering) from a Tier-2 Engg. College

Extra-curriculars:
1. Patented an invention (IP, Government of India)
2. Published an International Research Paper (Elsevier)
3. Won a National Level Competition for an innovative business model.
4. Japanese JLPT N3 Certification (Japanese Language Proficiency Test)

Goals:
Currently studying for the CFA Level 1. Having worked in a startup and promoted to Team Lead within a year, I actively developed an innovative prototype for a 3-D Printing solution. The project did not achieve liftoff due to a lack of funding from Japanese Clients, despite being promising. A long term dream of mine is to work in Venture Capital, and be able to support growing startups that show great potential.

While I understand that it may not be possible to directly get into a VC Firm Post-MBA, the primary goal is to pivot from Tech to Finance as soon as possible. Getting a role in Consulting, for instance, could pave the way for me to transition into Venture Capital gradually, as I strengthen my foothold in the management domain.

To achieve this, I prefer to pursue a two-year, full-time MBA. I am eager to return to being a student and to contribute meaningfully in the classroom. A full-time MBA would allow me to focus on my chosen specialization and gain hands-on experience through a summer internship as I transition from tech to finance.

current senior in college (top 15 public school) applying to deferred programs. interested in the intersection between technology, sustainability, and business - want to work in sustainability strategy for a company, sustainable VC, or start my own sustainable tech company --> looking for more entrepreneurial or data-driven programs

internships: Kaiser Permanente, Truist Financial

extracurriculars:
2 years Business College Ambassador & Resident Assistant, 1 year Orientation Leader for incoming students, 4 years Student Government (highest position was to supervise a program including 40+ first-year students), 3.5 years of sustainability research in business department & business frat, 1 year leadership & sustainability fellowships, 2 year executive position on sustainble fashion organization, 1 year student consultant in consulting org (semester-long sustainability consulting project with different org as well)

I recognize that I am far from a perfect applicant, so hoping to do well on the GMAT to make up for a bad GPA. I also plan on using the additional essay to explain the extenuating circumstances below.

Extenuating Circumstances: bad gpa a combination of helping family during cancer battle and eventual death of father, some mental health struggles

Please let me know if you have any advice or suggestions as well! Thanks!

Hi
Priyanka here from ARINGO. Speaking about your profile, there is a lot to be excited about here. With about 5 years of diverse experience spanning finance, strategy, and now public sector consulting, you present a well-rounded and analytically strong background that fits right in with what Adcoms at top B-schools look for. Your role as an Associate Consultant, especially in the public sector, suggests you've developed strong stakeholder management skills, a keen understanding of complex systems, and the ability to drive impact in high-stakes environments.

A 3.9 GPA looks strong, while a 695 FE looks decent for some of your target schools like Harvard, Wharton etc. Adcoms at these top B-schools will also value your demonstrated intellectual capacity and your public sector consulting background. INSEAD’s global network and intense one-year structure could fast-track your finance transition, especially if you’re open to working in Europe or the Middle East.

I would like to know how flexible are you in terms of geography post-MBA? It will also be crucial for you to bring more clarity in your post-MBA goals. You’re in a strong position, and with the right storytelling, you could be a compelling candidate across your target schools.

Hello,

You’ve got a solid foundation—3.9 GPA, a consulting role with a public sector focus, and exposure to finance and strategy. That’s a great platform for M7 apps. However, aiming for a high-finance post-MBA with a GMAT Focus 695 (≈705 classic) is a stretch for schools like Wharton and Columbia unless the rest of the application hits hard. These roles are fiercely competitive, and schools will scrutinize both quant skills and pedigree.

You’ll need to double down on making a tight, finance-ready narrative about how your consulting + finance background translates to IB/PE. INSEAD, LBS, and Yale are great fits for your pivot, and Rotman could be a strong safety. Let’s dive into the details on a call and strategize around school fit, essays, and how to sharpen your finance story.

Thank you for sharing your profile @Double A! You come across as a good, well-rounded candidate with a compelling academic and professional foundation. With 5 years of experience across strategy and finance roles, currently working as an associate consultant in the public sector, you bring a diverse perspective and cross-functional exposure that top business schools value. Your 3.9 GPA stands out, demonstrating both academic discipline and intellectual capacity, particularly important as you target quant- and finance-focused schools.

Your GMAT Focus score of 695 is good, while competitive for many programs, it can be decent for some schools like HBS, Wharton, and Sloan, especially for international applicants targeting finance roles. That said, your high GPA, strong consulting background, and clear goals shall help compensate, especially if you build a compelling story around your post-MBA pivot into private equity or investment banking.

Transitioning into PE or IB from a public-sector consulting background is certainly ambitious, but not impossible. The key will be to convincingly articulate why you're making this shift, how your current experience has prepared you for the leap, and what steps you’ve already taken to develop relevant technical and commercial skills (like financial modeling, exposure to transactions, deal advisory, or valuation). Admissions committees will want to see clarity, realism, and self-awareness in your short- and long-term goals. This narrative will need to be particularly well thought-out for Wharton, Booth, and Columbia, which are deeply connected to finance pipelines.

Additionally, you might want to consider schools like Darden and Tepper or Georgetown, which offer strong quantitative rigor and good outcomes in consulting and finance.

To strengthen your candidacy further, we recommend reflecting on the following questions: Why specifically are you shifting from the public sector to private equity or investment banking? What technical or industry exposure do you already have that supports this transition? How do you envision using an MBA to close the gap between your current and future career paths? What leadership stories from your work experience showcase your ability to drive results in ambiguous environments? Answers to these questions will serve as the core of your essays and interviews.

Overall, your academic strength, well-defined goals, and diverse professional exposure can make you a competitive applicant for many top programs. With thoughtful storytelling, clear rationale for your career pivot, and potentially a slightly higher GMAT Focus score, you could significantly increase your chances of admission at top-tier schools. Good luck!

Hi @Double A,

You have a strong academic foundation (3.9 GPA) and a solid GMAT Focus score (695), which puts you in a competitive position. Your experience across finance and strategy, followed by consulting in the public sector, shows versatility and transferable skills for a finance pivot.

To strengthen your case for investment banking or private equity post-MBA—especially in the U.S.—focus on clearly articulating your rationale for the shift, and highlight any exposure to financial modeling, deal work, or client advisory. It's crucial to build an authentic, compelling narrative. Focus on articulating your goals and career transition plan clearly - make sure your goals are specific and well-defined. Connect your past experiences to your future goals, highlight the specific skills or exposure you're seeking and explain how the MBA will help you gain these to achieve your goals.

To maximize your chances, consider applying to a balanced mix of reach, target, and safety schools. Rotman could be a good safety school.

I work as a civil service officer int he federal government of Pakistan, at a leadership position in the oldest and most pervasive public sector organizations. I lead a team of 300 in my division. most work is administrative and geared towards achieving profit targets. I plan to pivot to consulting specifically in the development and public sector advisory roles. In the long term I plan to use that experience to return to my nation as an entrepreneur, venturing into increasing efficiency and creating public value at inefficient public sector institutions, the major factor of economic downturn in Pakistan.
