Hi @Amav
Thanks for sharing your profile!

First and foremost, you make a unique applicant given your Military & Defense background. But when you juxtapose this against your post-MBA plan which is to work in the Diversified Financial Services sector, your profile is like a double-edged sword unless the transition narrative is cohesive and you can show transferable skills. For this, we would need to understand if you have taken up responsibilities where you had to make strategic decisions, manage risks for operations, or have even remotely handled finance-related or cross-functional projects within defense (budgets, procurement, vendor negotiation) in your tenure. You need to connect the dots without which you won’t stand a good chance. If you don’t have any direct finance exposure, then you should consider pursuing some financial modelling certifications, attempting the CFA L1 exam, or gaining practical exposure to finance through internships, projects, or self-initiated finance-related initiatives. Also, your goals, have to be defined and your career progression should be expressed via short- and long-term plans. This should also build on your military experience so that there is logical progression.

Moving on to your academics, 86.6% is a good score but the 625 GMAT Focus score is an issue as its below the median for LBS, INSEAD, and IESE. You will have to push to a 680-710+ range.

We also recommend adding schools like Warwick Business School, HEC Paris, ESCP Business School, etc. for better chances.

We’d love to offer a 1-on-1 profile evaluation to dive deeper into your strengths, discuss more about your portfolio, talk through your fit across schools, and co-create a tailored application game plan!

Thanks for sharing, Amav.

I'd like to understand your work-ex better to assess. A military/defense background can stand out well, especially if you can highlight leadership, high-stakes decision-making, and cross-functional experience.

Transitioning into finance will need a clear story: why the shift, and how your current skills translate to your post-MBA goals.

Academically, the GPA is strong, especially if backed by a strong undergrad institution. The GMAT Focus score of 625 may limit options at LBS, INSEAD, and even IESE/ ISB. A retake could help: target 675+ to stay competitive at these schools.

Your school list makes sense given your preference for 1-year programs and international exposure. Some more schools to consider could be HEC Paris and Oxbridge.

Feel free to reach out for a deeper chat.

Thanks for sharing your profile @Amav. You bring a unique and compelling background to the MBA applicant pool, with 4 years of experience in the Military & Defense sector, a field that consistently produces strong candidates due to its emphasis on leadership, discipline, and high-stakes decision-making. Your academic performance is good, with an impressive GPA of 86.6%, and while your GMAT Focus score of 625 is slightly below average for some top-tier programs, your leadership potential and differentiated experience can still make you a strong contender, if the rest of your application is crafted strategically. We’ve had the privilege of working with exceptional candidates from military backgrounds who successfully gained admission to top B-schools, many with scholarships. You can take a look at one of the success stories.

Your target schools, ISB, LBS, INSEAD, and IESE, are good choices, particularly for career switchers like yourself. Schools like ISB and IESE value leadership-driven profiles and applicants from non-traditional industries. However, for LBS and INSEAD, your current score may be a bit on the lower side. That said, a retake aiming for 675+ would improve your competitiveness significantly, especially if you’re aiming for scholarships or a place at the most selective programs.

Your military background likely involved managing people, resources, and operations, skills highly transferable to your post-MBA goal of working in finance, particularly within diversified financial services. If you can demonstrate exposure to budgeting, procurement, logistics, or operations, and draw connections to your desired pivot into finance, your application can make a compelling case. Additionally, any experiences with international deployments or cross-functional projects should be highlighted, as they’ll resonate with global programs like INSEAD and IESE.

To strengthen your career narrative, try to be specific about your post-MBA goals within finance. Are you aiming for roles in investment banking, asset management, fintech, or corporate finance? Schools want to see not just ambition but also clarity and realism. If you haven’t already, consider engaging in finance-focused online certifications (like Coursera, CFA Level 1 prep) to demonstrate your commitment to the industry switch.

Start early with your resume, identify recommenders now, and begin outlining your essays, especially focusing on why MBA, why now, and why finance. We’d love to learn more about your journey. If you’d like, feel free to book a personalized profile evaluation session.

Cheers!

Hi Amav
Priyanka here from ARINGO. Speaking about your profile, a military background looks strong. You will have to highlight your leadership and decision-making skills to strengthen your profile. With over 7 years of technical experience in the R&D division of a leading FinTech company, I specialize in building enterprise-scale applications and data-driven solutions that enhance customer experience for major financial institutions—our product is used by 9 out of the top 10 banks in the U.S. My role blends backend development with data science and analytics, where I work extensively with large-scale financial datasets (petabyte scale) to develop intelligent features, predictive models, and decision-support tools that directly impact product performance and user satisfaction.

Education Background:
I hold a B.Tech degree from NIT Delhi, a Tier-1 engineering institute. Coming from a rural background where education itself was a significant challenge, I gradually discovered the importance of holistic development. In college, I began volunteering for campus events and ultimately led the institute’s tech fest in my final year. I also taught underprivileged children from nearby slums, helping improve their academic performance and encouraging their participation in extracurricular activities. I’ve also pursued sports passionately, starting from scratch and going on to lead my department’s Kabaddi and Table Tennis teams as captain in inter-department tournaments.

At work, I actively contribute to organizing team-building events and volunteer regularly for my company’s CSR initiatives.

Post-MBA Goals:

In the short term, I aim to transition into strategic and decision-making roles at a technology company to better understand business operations and product strategy. In the long term, my vision is to launch a FinTech and AgriTech venture focused on building sustainable supply chains and empowering rural communities, particularly farmers—by driving inclusive economic development.

Good foundational pieces are available in your profile. You will need to separate out the noise in your narrative from what will really matter in your applications. School selection is as much a science as an art, and you may want to go a bit broader. Keep an eye on any news re the fate of OPT/H1B.

Thanks for sharing your profile @Manoj Harsha! Your profile presents a good blend of strong academics, technical depth, and a purpose-driven narrative that will resonate with many top MBA programs. With a GPA of 4.0 from NIT Delhi, one of India’s premier engineering institutes, you have already established yourself as a high-performing student. Your GMAT FE score of 675 is competitive for most of your target schools. However, given the highly competitive nature of Indian male tech applicants, your success will rest heavily on your story, leadership, and clarity of goals, which you have articulated well.

Professionally, your 7 years of experience in the R&D division of a major FinTech firm stand out for both scale and impact. Working with petabyte-scale financial datasets and delivering intelligent, data-driven features used by 9 of the top 10 U.S. banks places you in an elite tier of technical professionals. What makes this experience even more compelling is the bridge you've built between deep technical expertise and tangible business outcomes. Schools like Tepper, Kellogg MBAi, and Cornell can especially value your hybrid role that integrates backend development with data science and business analytics.

Outside of work, your extracurricular engagement and leadership trajectory help differentiate you further. From leading your college’s tech fest to teaching underprivileged children and captaining multiple sports teams, you demonstrate a well-rounded personality that aligns with the values of collaborative and socially conscious MBA programs. Your involvement in CSR initiatives at work adds another layer of community engagement that top programs like Yale SOM and Ross hold in high regard. These activities help humanize your technical profile and show emotional intelligence, resilience, and initiative, all valued by admissions committees. You may take a look at this blog: Extracurricular Activities for MBA

Your post-MBA goals show ambition. In the short term, your plan to pivot into strategic roles within the technology sector is logical and achievable, especially with your current experience and the analytical mindset you bring to problem-solving. Your long-term goal to build a FinTech and AgriTech venture that empowers rural communities is deeply personal, socially impactful, and mission-driven. This shall resonate especially well with schools like Yale SOM, Ross, and ISB.

In terms of application strategy, make sure your essays emphasize not just what you’ve done, but why it mattered, how you collaborated across functions, and what you learned along the way. Show your transition from a problem solver to a visionary, someone ready to lead tech initiatives that balance innovation with inclusion. Schools will want to see that you’re not only capable of excelling in a business role but also that you have the empathy, adaptability, and vision to drive meaningful change.

To further sharpen your application, here are a few questions to reflect on: Have you had opportunities to work on cross-functional teams or directly influence business strategy? Are there any entrepreneurial side projects you’ve explored? Can you demonstrate progression in scope or complexity over your 7 years of work experience? And finally, how will you show that your passion for rural development and FinTech is not just aspirational, but something you've already taken early steps toward?

With thoughtful storytelling, clear articulation of goals, and alignment to each school’s mission, you can differentiate yourself from the crowded Indian male tech applicant pool. You can take a look at this blog: Overrepresented Applicants. If you’d like help with school selection, personal branding, or crafting essays that bring your story to life, we’d be happy to support you through the next steps. Feel free to book a profile evaluation session.

Cheers!

Hi @Manoj Harsha
Thanks for sharing your profile!

Your profile is eye-catching in many aspects. Your R&D experience shows substantial growth and outcome and you can strategically emphasize your technical depth in data-driven backend development, exposure to petabyte-scale datasets, and your role in enhancing customer-facing products for 9 of the top 10 US banks in your essays. Do show some quantitative impact as well to solidify the impact of your work. Based on your mix of software engineering and analytics experience, you stand a good chance for programs like Kellogg’s MBAi, Tepper, and Ross. They also admire tech-savvy candidates like yourself who want to progress in product, strategy, or innovation management profiles.

GMAT-wise, it’s better to use the Focus-edition. Given that you have scored 675 in this format, try to push your score by another 20 to 30 points for Yale, Kellogg, Cornell, and Ross. ISB and Tepper can be targeted with the current score.

Moving on, the extracurricular activities that you have undertaken further enrich your profile. Use you experiences in leading your college’s tech fest and sports teams, tutoring underprivileged children, and volunteering in CSR initiatives to explain what you have learnt from them, how they have helped you grow as a person, and how you could you draw on these experiences to help the school’s relevant clubs and student organizations. Speaking of contributing to the schools’ extra-curricular and volunteering initiatives will show that you are eager to contribute both in and out of the campus.

Coming to your goals, you’re on the right track by deciding to pivot into tech strategy roles post-MBA. Your plan to establish a FinTech venture in the long term is in sync with your current experience in a FinTech Firm. Only ensure that you adequately explain how an MBA build on this experience and how it will give you the skillset and knowledge to establish and run such a business and its supply chain. You’ve also mentioned your plan of launching an Agri Tech business. Since you haven’t mentioned any exposure to this sector, it’s advisable to explain why the Agri Tech sector, why you want to aid the economic development of farmers and how an MBA will support this, etc.

So, concentrate on these aspects and you will have a more compelling profile. We would also suggest expanding your school list for more success in R1.

We’d love to offer a 1-on-1 profile evaluation to dive deeper into your strengths, discuss more about your portfolio, talk through your fit across schools, and co-create a tailored application game plan!

Hi @Manoj Harsha,

You have a strong and well-rounded profile. With 7 years of impactful technical experience at a top FinTech firm, you've contributed to building enterprise-scale, data-driven solutions used by major global banks. Your blend of backend development and data science, working with petabyte-scale datasets, positions you well for tech-focused MBA programs. While your GMAT Focus score of 675 is decent, it is slightly on the lower side for top-tier programs. Also, being an Indian applicant with a tech background, you would be part of an overrepresented candidate pool - I’d encourage you to retake the GMAT and aim to improve your score by 20-30 points to strengthen your application.

Beyond work, your journey from a rural background to leading campus events, teaching underprivileged children, and captaining sports teams adds a deeply personal and socially conscious dimension to your story. Continued volunteering and CSR involvement at work further reflect leadership and community orientation. Your post-MBA goal to move into tech strategy roles and eventually launch a FinTech/AgriTech venture focused on rural development shows both ambition and alignment with your personal values.

Highlighting your leadership, professional achievements, relevant skills, career goals, unique experiences, and fit with the program effectively will be crucial in crafting a compelling application. To maximize your chances, consider applying to a balanced mix of reach, target, and safety schools. Feel free to book a free call with our MBA experts for a more detailed discussion. Hi Manoj
Priyanka here from ARINGO. Speaking about your profile, you bring a strong, well-rounded profile with 7 years of tech experience. Your ability to blend backend development with data science positions you well for post-MBA roles in product/tech strategy. What really elevates your story is your long-term vision of launching a FinTech/AgriTech venture to empower rural communities—a goal rooted in personal experience and social impact.

Your GMAT score looks decent for your target programs. The next important task will be to align other aspects of your application. Your leadership in college and continued volunteering work shows a strong, consistent commitment to growth and giving back to the society. Have you thought about how these experiences shape your leadership approach today?

You can also consider adding schools Fuqua and UCLA—both offer strong support for tech and social impact goals. With refined storytelling you can present a powerful application across this set. Work on sharpening your “why MBA now” and making that transition from deep tech to strategic leadership as seamless and compelling as possible.

I’d be happy to offer you a free profile review for top MBA programs to see where you stand and how to boost your chances— happy to help!

Hello,

Thanks for the detailed profile.

You bring good experience in FinTech, with technical depth in data-driven applications and scale, which will stand out in tech-focused programs.

Your work directly impacts top-tier financial institutions and showcases strong applied analytics, which makes you a solid fit for programs like Kellogg MBAi and Tepper.

Your background from NIT Delhi and rural upbringing, coupled with community involvement and leadership in sports, reflects a well-rounded, impact-driven narrative. The GMAT is slightly below median for schools like Kellogg or Yale, but your Classic 720 gives you a fighting chance, just ensure strong execution in essays and recs.

Your long-term goal in rural fintech-agritech is compelling and differentiating if tied well to past experiences and the MBA.

Happy to help you tighten the storytelling and school strategy.

@Manoj - Thanks for sharing your profile.

Your academic arc looks good, the GMAT is a bit on the lower side for M7's though, considering the competitive applicant pool - any scope to improve here?

The work-ex is strong, given the analytics/ fintech experience, international exposure. Some more details can help: have you switched firms? have there been any promotions?

The work-ex (7 years) is a bit on the higher side, but with a strong motivation and well thought out career goals, this would be alright.

Hope this helps. Feel free to reach out for a deeper chat.

Congrats on the profile and Fingers crossed for some interviews!
Startup and consulting should be a good mix and the fact that you have a pretty detailed job plan after graduation - that's awesome! Schools will love it though they have much less influence all the way in Asia (no on campus recruiting but the network should be strong enough). I just would not over-emphasize the network as you don't want them to think you bet all your money on a network that may or may not play out.

Hey BB thanks a bunch for your feedback. I have focused more on the hard skills + ops on the essays with very light inputs on the networking aspects due to this reason.

Do you think the school mix is too ambitious? Low stats has me really worried esp for T15.

In terms of chances, I would say two things which are kind of independent of each other and as always, anything you see on the Internet, take it with a grain of salt, including these comments.

There are basically two gates in the application process and gate one is getting shortlisted for the interview which is where I feel the most people get shut down which may have a great profile but for some stupid reason during the rush of the three weeks after the application applications were submitted, schools miss those great profiles and great applicants perhaps by overly focusing too much on a few quantitative or easy identify things such as demographics.

So I feel which is not a scientific truth or fact but the mere feeling based on a random set of factors that made me feel this way, so I feel that if you can clear the interview stage, you have a really good shot with your background and hopefully essays that are articulated OK. You don’t need to do an amazing job in essays by the way, you just have to be good enough showing that there is more than just what you put on the resume or even that the resume you presented is not embellished beyond belief.

Getting picked for the interview, that’s hard to tell. I think each school has different method for that and some do it better than others but I’ve seen a lot of them missing great applicants or denying them. Just had a conversation about that in the broad MBA chat. People who have been accepted to similarly ranked programs with full scholarships, have been denied without interview in others. There’s really no rhyme or reason but the best thing to do is to apply to as many schools as you can to minimize the chances of something weird happening and also maximize the chances of something weird positive happening. Last year, we had a moderator who got dinged everywhere in all the top 15 but admitted to Kellogg. Frankly, Kellogg made the right choice and all the other ones made a mistake because I knew the individual and they are highly capable. So kudos on applying to whole bunch of programs 👍

Fingers crossed that it all works out in a great way. I wish I could give you a guarantee that these would work out and you would get admitted to all of these. I know many start thinking about applying to lower ranked schools. I would also encourage you to think about it but not applying to programs you’re not willing to attend because that’s a waste of your time and resources, so if you considering top 25 programs, ask yourself if you would attend them and if yes then you can absolutely hedge your bets.

Academic:

I graduated from a tier-1 engineering institute in India in 2020 with a B. Tech. focused in Electronics. In my final year, I developed interest in AI, Machine learning and data science which assisted me in publishing two research papers and landing a job as a Data Engineer.

Work-exp:

Next 3.5 years at a leading financial services organization (Fortune 100) where I am serving as an Assitant Manager in the data governance and management team. I am working as an individual contributor in my current role with expertise in Product management, data science, data engineering and data governance. My current role also involves portfolio analytics and understanding about the credit and fraud risks associated in providing credit or lending to a customer which gives me an edge in understanding basic financial metrics.

4. Head of Mentorship Club in College.

Hi @akshatv45,

With 5 years of experience spanning data engineering and financial services, a solid GMAT Focus score (695), and a strong mix of technical and financial exposure, you bring a nice blend of skills. Your transition from tech to finance especially through roles involving credit risk and analytics sets up a logical narrative for your post-MBA goals. Investment banking, equity research, or VC are ambitious goals but feasible - it will be important to refine and prioritize them. These roles differ significantly in skillsets and recruiting paths. Schools (and employers) will expect clarity: pick one as your immediate post-MBA target and explain why it aligns with your background. For example, if you're leaning toward equity research or quant roles, your data and analytics expertise is a strong asset. If it’s investment banking, you’ll need to show that you understand deal-making, financial modeling, and client interaction - you can then make the case for such a career switch.
VC is a highly competitive and niche post-MBA path with limited placements, a well-defined rationale and evidence of relevant exposure will be key.

Keep your long-term wealth management goal in view, but clearly connect the dots from your current role to your immediate post-MBA goal and then to your future vision. Highlighting your leadership, professional achievements, relevant skills, career goals, unique experiences, and fit with the program effectively will be crucial in crafting a compelling application. To maximize your chances, consider applying to a balanced mix of reach, target, and safety schools.

Akshat - Are you sure you need an MBA education to get into equity/quant research? Be sure about this. Secondly, VCs in the US do not sponsor international MBAs.
Assuming my arguments hold true, where does that leave your short-term goals?

Thank you for sharing your background in such detail @akshatv45! Your transition from data engineering at Capgemini to a product/data governance role in a Fortune 100 financial services company illustrates adaptability and the ability to thrive in cross-functional environments. The blend of product management, data science, credit risk, and portfolio analytics provides a rare mix of skills that many business schools and employers will value highly, especially if you're aiming for roles in investment banking or equity/quant research. That said, your current role as an individual contributor may raise some questions about leadership experience, so it will be important to demonstrate how you’ve influenced outcomes or led initiatives even without formal managerial responsibilities.

Your extracurricular profile adds a rich dimension to your application. Serving as editor for a publishing house, leading multiple student organizations, and performing as a guitarist shows that you bring creativity, initiative, and strong communication skills to the table. Business schools consistently look for candidates who will contribute to the MBA community both inside and outside the classroom, and you fit that mold.

However, there are a few areas where tightening your narrative would significantly improve your odds. First, your career goals need to be more focused. From multiple distinct post-MBA paths, investment banking, VC/PE, equity research, and quant research, it’s essential to select one of these (like investment banking or equity research) as your primary short-term goal and align your rationale, school choices, and past experiences around it. Your long-term goal of building a wealth management firm aligns well with your family business and entrepreneurship experience. This can be positioned as your “why MBA” if presented with clarity and conviction.

Your GMAT Focus score of 695 is nice and should keep you in a competitive place for many top-tier programs. To strengthen your application, make sure your resume emphasizes leadership, impact, and quantifiable outcomes. Show how you’ve led cross-functional teams, managed stakeholders, or launched initiatives that had measurable business results. Your essays should tell a compelling story that connects your past experiences with your post-MBA goals and long-term vision, while your recommenders should be coached to speak about your leadership potential, maturity, and collaborative mindset. You can take a look at this blog on: How to bring collinearity in your post-MBA goals?

Overall, your profile seems a good combination of experience and ambition. The key will be packaging your story strategically and tightening your career goals narrative. If you'd like, we can help you structure your goals essay, sharpen your resume bullets, and build your school list further based on culture, recruiting strengths, and geography. Would you be open to sharing more details about your current projects or any quant-heavy work you’ve done recently? That could help us tailor your narrative even more effectively. Let's chat. Feel free to book a profile evaluation session.

Cheers!

Hello Akshat, thanks for sharing your profile.

With a GMAT Focus score of 695 (roughly 710–715 Classic equivalent), you're in range for some top programs but still below the median for ultra-elite M7s like Stanford, Wharton, and Sloan. If you have capacity, consider pushing it up to 730+ Classic equivalent (~715–720 Focus) to sharpen your chances at those top-tier targets and scholarship pools.

Your pivot from data engineering to finance through internal product and analytics roles is interesting. However, the leap to IB/PE/VC is still a tough sell, especially without frontline deal experience. Schools will look for more precise alignment between your experience and short-term goals. Try positioning product/quant research or FinTech strategy as your STG, and reserve IB/VC for longer-term ambitions.

Your extracurriculars are strong, including editorial, leadership, and music, all of which add texture. Just ensure your essays don’t come off as scattered. Anchor them with a focused, achievable post-MBA plan that links clearly to what you’ve done.

Let’s talk about how to make that positioning work across this ambitious school list.

Hi @AmeerKhatri, Thanks for taking the time to review my profile and provide your insights. I disagree with the classic equivalent conversions that you mentioned. I think the GMAC concordance table is the source of truth for this kind of conversion, which is very different from what you mentioned. Please feel free to keep me honest.

@akshatv45 - good profile, overall. Some thoughts/ clarifications:

1. Undergrad pedigree and GMAT score are good. A higher GMAT would help strengthen the case, especially for M7's. GPA seems a bit on the lower side - any particular reason(s)?

2. The work-ex looks strong, given the fintech/ product exposure and employer brand. Would like to understand your roles better e.g. key projects, any promotion/ progression(?) etc.

3. IB/ VC are typically tricky immediately post MBA (for internationals) without a core finance background, so the career goals would need some brainstorming. This in turn would also impact the right mix of schools.

4. Extracurriculars present some interesting angles. How long have you been involved in these activities? And what's the family business about, and your involvement?

Hope this helps provide some directional clarity. Feel free to reach out for a deeper chat.

Hey akshatv45
Priyanka here from ARINGO. Speaking about your profile, your profile looks rich and multifaceted. You are blending tech, finance, leadership, and creativity in a way that adcoms at these top schools would love to see.

Strengths that adcoms at these schools will take into consideration:
1. Academics from a tier-1 engineering school, a 695 FE score and 5 years of work experience.
2. Cross-functional skill set in data, finance, and product is rare and highly relevant to today’s tech-driven finance world.
3. Leadership experience as E-Cell, IEEE, and mentorship club head.
4. Creative edge (guitarist + editor!) — makes your profile memorable.
5. Clear career goals in IB and long-term entrepreneurship.

To further strengthen your profile, you should talk about any mentorship, leadership, or impact stories at work that show you're more than just a strong individual contributor.

Your profile shows serious potential, and with some positioning around your career clarity, impact stories, and leadership narrative, you will be a strong applicant at your target programs. If you’d like, I’d be happy to offer you a free profile review to see where you stand and how to boost your chances— happy to help!

Hi @akshatv45
Thanks for sharing your profile!

While your 7.44 GPA is slightly below average for M7+ schools, it’s still within range considering your tech major. What works well for you here is the depth of your undergrad involvement from leading multiple college clubs to publishing two research papers in AI and ML, which adds intellectual and leadership heft to your profile. Your GMAT Focus score of 695 is decent, but it places you in the lower quartile at schools like Stanford, Wharton, and Sloan. A score in the 725+ range would materially enhance your competitiveness, especially if you’re eyeing highly selective finance roles post-MBA.

On the work experience front, you bring 5 years of diverse exposure, transitioning from a technical role in data engineering to a more strategic and analytical role in financial services. Your current stint as an Assistant Manager at a Fortune 100 financial firm is a strong aspect of your repertoire. Most importantly, your skills in data governance, product management, and portfolio analytics makes your application more favorable. Adding to this is the fact that you have some grounding in credit and fraud risk. While you don’t have direct pre-MBA finance experience in investment banking or asset management, your current exposure to data-driven financial insights can be used to build a compelling pivot narrative into roles like equity research, quant finance, or fintech VC.

Your extracurricular participation speaks for your well-roundedness. The leadership roles you have helmed in college, i.e., Head of E-Cell, Mentorship Club, and IEEE, illustrate your initiative-taking nature. Your creative side as a guitarist performing at local gigs also adds more flair to your personality. Your editorial work and involvement in a family business can be strategically positioned as additional signals of initiative and versatility.

VC/PE/Equity Research/Quant Research spaces are hyper-competitive, and career switchers without prior banking/PE experience like yourself will have to prove that you have some preliminary understanding of the domains. This is where the MBA can help you. Frame your goals clearly, talk about how the MBA will help you venture into these sub-fields of finance and how your existing background will aid in the same, eg., you can speak about leveraging data science and analytics to drive investment decisions. Your long-term goal of launching a wealth management firm can also work well, especially if anchored in your current exposure to credit risk and analytics.

Looking at your school list, you’ve cast a wide net. At M7 schools (Stanford, Wharton, Kellogg, Sloan, Columbia), you are competitive on work experience and leadership but will need a sharper GMAT and a well-polished story to offset GPA/score concerns. Darden, Stern, Yale, and Johnson are good fits for your goals and profile as they have a well-regarded finance faculty and a distinguished focus on analytical thinking. ISB is a very feasible target, and you’ll be a solid contender with your GMAT and 5 years of experience. European programs like LBS, HEC, and INSEAD offer good pathways into consulting, PE, and IB as well. Be thoughtful about splitting your applications across Rounds 1 and 2 based on bandwidth and whether you plan to retake the GMAT.

We’d love to offer a 1-on-1 profile evaluation to dive deeper into your strengths, talk through your fit across schools, and co-create a tailored application game plan!

Post-MBA goal Luxury Retail in Beauty Industry (Product Marketing/Retail Strategy/Merchandising)

5 YOE - 2 in Product Management in Tech and 3 in Tech Consulting in Big 4 firm.
Certified SAFe Program Consultant and SAFe Product Manager/Product Owner
undergrad Management Information Systems at Virginia Tech
planning to take GRE again once more

Debating if I should take the acceptance i get this year or reapply to Stern R1, they told me to reapply in the rejection letter, that they loved parts of my application but others could be strengthened (i applied with test waiver that they gave me) and this was after interview.

Also unfortunately i did lose my job this year but all the schools were aware of that before I applied what happened, was a non-issue for Georgetown (also received test waiver here as well but submitted a score right before final decision was made). Columbia I applied to with a not amazing gmat score before i realized i liked the gre better.....

Hello,

You've already made impressive progress: 5 years in tech across Big 4 consulting and product management, plus SAFe credentials that show leadership potential.

Your post-MBA pivot into luxury beauty/retail is distinctive, especially for U.S. schools that value niche, consumer-centric career goals. Stern's rejection with an invite to reapply and McDonough's admit validate that you’re on the radar of strong programs. The missing link is a stronger test score; your 315 GRE doesn’t fully reflect your analytical readiness, especially for marketing/strategy tracks at top-tier schools.

If luxury retail is the dream, Stern is a great fit, NYC access, strong retail marketing electives, and industry exposure. I’d seriously consider reapplying Round 1 with a GRE 320+ and refreshed career narrative. In parallel, use the McDonough admit as a strong fallback, it’s a good brand, but the location is less ideal for beauty retail. Let’s hop on a call and plan your reapp strategy with precision.

Hi thanks for the feedback! So the thing with my gre I got a 160 verbal and 155 quant and I’m planning on taking it again to send to USC! Also I applied to stern with a waiver that they gave me after going through my college transcript and resume. Yeah I have considered reapplying R1 I think I’m just deciding about Georgetown bc they do have a good retail and luxury club I recently talked to their president and the school is only an hour away from my parents house. They also have lots of people get the Estée Lauder LDP post grad and Estée Lauder is very connected with the school along with a couple other beauty brand alums (glossier). I guess I’m just thinking in my head is it worth waiting another year off of stern telling me to reapply cause then that means I probably would have to switch gears to job searching. If I get USC I think no brainer I will go bc the Tower 28 founder went there and they have connections to lots of indie beauty brands + L’Oréal and Estée Lauder.

I’ll schedule a call for sure!

Hi @prekanda97,

You have a solid profile with 5 years of experience in tech product management and consulting, strong certifications (SAFe), and a unique post-MBA goal in luxury beauty retail - a niche but achievable pivot with the right positioning. Your undergrad from Virginia Tech and a 3.16 GPA are respectable, but your 315 GRE is currently below average for top-tier schools, so I would strong encourage retaking it, especially if aiming for Stern.

Given that Stern encouraged you to reapply and liked elements of your profile, you’re clearly competitive. A GRE score of 325+ and tighter alignment between your story, goals, and past experience would strengthen your reapplication. Georgetown McDonough is a solid option, if you're looking to start soon and want a career pivot. But if Stern is your dream school, it would be worth putting in the effort and reapplying in R1.

Hi VikSeth
Priyanka here from ARINGO. Speaking about your profile, your GMAT score is a bit low for FT programs like Wharton and Stanford. Your GPA is also a slight concern; I would suggest a retake and aim for a score close to 715 as it will compensate for your GPA. For top global B-schools, I would recommend applying with atleast 3+ years of full-time work experience. Your ECs look strong and can make your profile stand out amidst the pool of applicants.

Hello,

You bring a differentiated story with national-level sports credentials, leadership roles at Decathlon, and a rare sustainability angle.

That’s a potent mix, especially for Kellogg, INSEAD, and HEC. The GMAT Focus 665 is below M7 averages, but your athletic excellence and brand ambassadorship could more than compensate if your essays are sharp.

You’ll need to craft a tight narrative that links sports, sustainability, and consulting. Schools like Tuck and Duke could also be strong cultural fits. Let’s connect one-on-one and build a game plan to make these strengths work for top schools.

FocusPocus, your work experience sounds relevant for your career goals and that's one of the biggest requirements for submitting a winning application (ofcourse the writing execution is equally make or break). European MBAs have a good focus on sustainability so you should find substantial academic and extra curricular resources around this area. For this same reason, i would also add INSEAD to the list of b-schools. They are big on sustainability and are a consulting powerhouse as well - so it makes sense to apply from your career goals perspective.
I would really love to see a higher GMAT score- even around starting 600s FE - as a more competitive score. consider retaking the GMAT.

Hi. I think IESE and HEC will be tough with that score. Rotman is much more forgiving however.

Hi @FocusPocus,

You bring a compelling profile with 7 years of experience in corporate finance and demonstrated leadership on a sustainability-focused project with regional impact. Your pivot toward sustainability particularly in Sustainable Finance or Sustainability Consulting is well-aligned with global trends and increasing employer interest in ESG-focused professionals.

However, the GMAT Focus score of 575 is a concern, especially for competitive programs. If possible, consider retaking the test to improve your score (aim for 645+), which would significantly strengthen your academic profile. In your application, highlight how your finance background equips you with the quantitative and strategic skills needed for sustainability roles, and clearly articulate how an MBA will bridge your industry pivot.

Highlighting your leadership, professional achievements, career goals, unique experiences, and fit with the program effectively will be crucial in crafting a compelling application. To maximize your chances, consider applying to a balanced mix of reach, target, and safety schools. Feel free to book a free call with our MBA consultants for a more detailed discussion. Hello,

Thank you for sharing your profile. With 7 years in corporate finance and leadership on a cross-regional circular economy project, your pivot to sustainability is both credible and compelling. IESE and HEC are great cultural fits, especially given your focus on Sustainable Finance and Consulting.

However, the 575 GMAT Focus score is well below the median for these schools. To stay competitive, a retake is highly recommended. If not, leverage your impact story, international scope, and financial expertise to offset the gap, Rotman could be a more realistic option.

Thank you for sharing your profile @FocusPocus! You bring a compelling background with 7 years of experience in corporate finance and a passion for sustainability. Leading a high-impact circular economy project across South and Central America is a notable achievement and aligns well with your post-MBA goals in Sustainable Finance and Sustainability Consulting. Your intent to pivot into roles that focus on environmental and social impact demonstrates a purpose-driven mindset, something top MBA programs deeply value.

From a strengths perspective, your professional maturity and regional diversity are immediate advantages. As a Peruvian candidate, you are part of an underrepresented demographic in most MBA cohorts, which can help you stand out, especially at European schools like IESE and HEC Paris. Moreover, your exposure to cross-border financial planning projects showcases leadership, multicultural collaboration, and initiative, key traits that admissions committees seek.

However, the most significant area for improvement lies in your GMAT Focus score of 575; this result is below the typical range for your target schools. For IESE and HEC Paris, a 665+ GMAT Focus score range can be a better place. That said, recently we had a successful applicant who got admit+scholarship offers from IESE and Cambridge Judge even with a low GRE score of 305. Similarly, while Rotman in Canada can be slightly more flexible, they would even recommend a stronger score for full competitiveness and scholarship potential. If you're targeting top-tier programs, retaking the GMAT or exploring the GRE as an alternative would substantially strengthen your application.

You might also consider adding a few more programs to your list. Oxford Saïd, Cambridge Judge, and ESMT Berlin could also be some options; they all emphasize innovation and responsible leadership. For test-flexible programs, you can look into IE Business School in Spain or UBC Sauder in Canada, which can be more flexible on GMAT requirements.

To further strengthen your application, we encourage you to reflect on a few key questions: What specific areas of sustainability are you most passionate about, climate finance, ESG consulting, or circular economy implementation? Can you quantify the business or environmental impact of the projects you've led? And how can you demonstrate leadership both within and beyond your job description? Strong, personal answers to these questions will help you craft powerful essays and a cohesive story. You can take a look at these blogs on: Exhibit Different Forms of Leadership and How to Write Winning MBA Essays

Overall, you're on a promising path. With a stronger test score and a clear, impact-driven narrative, you can be a competitive candidate for top MBA programs in Europe and Canada. We’d be happy to help further with shortlisting schools, structuring your personal story, or preparing for interviews when you're ready. Keep pushing forward, you have an inspiring mission. Best of luck with the GMAT exam.
