Hello Dee,
Thank you so much for the response! I am still a full-time student right now completing my final year of Masters. I just worry that most of summer internships have primarily been research-oriented. Math in particular. I haven't worked with any IB/Consulting firms in the summers since it is super uncommon for a degree curriculum like mine.
What GMAT score should I aim for to have decent chances for the deferred programs? Also, what schools(beyond M7) would you suggest for a profile like mine?
dee1pug1
All good, but!
1. Trust you know that you are not supposed to have formal work experience as a deferred MBA applicant. Assuming you are aiming for April 2025 deadlines, you should be in your final year of full-time education.
2. Indian male engineer: 720 will not be enough.
3. Think beyond M7; there is a wide world out there worth looking at.

I think that around 720 is on focus edition than classic.

725 on focus is equivalent to 760 classic so assuming score might work out.

But there's so many things to unpack here. There will be so much to and fro with the follow ups.

My reference to 720 not being enough was based on GMAT classic scores. In GFE, aim for a 705+.

I would recommend you do some research on why the deferred MBA programs were introduced by schools. Your internships should ideally be connected with your stream of education, not necessarily directly correlated to your choice of career. As quoted, there are too many things to think through, unpack, and repack for applications. If you haven't already started working on April deadlines, you are late. I had worked with a candidate over 11 months (elapsed time) for his applications.

The number of deferred admits is generally low in most schools, except a few like CBS and, more recently, Darden. All T15 are great choices, and you won't go wrong.

Thank you so much for the response! Any recommendations to salvage some applications considering that I began preparing now? What should be the general priority list of tasks to be done ASAP? Also, what other T15 schools should I consider in your opinion? I would greatly appreciate your answers. Thank you.

I am a Male, First Generation student, lower socio-economic background (traditional Indian farming household, <13k USD per annum)

Education:
Managed to get into one of the top research institutes in India, currently in my final year of integrated Bachelors + Masters degree(transdisciplinary) focusing on mathematics, data science and social science(my final year thesis project is in Applied Mathematics as well).

Grades:
8.2 / 10 CGPA (During my third year, I had to move in and out of campus due to my father being a recovering alcoholic. Had to finally enroll him in a rehab program. Took a big toll on my own mental health. Missed many exams. Had to help back at home while my mother and I tried to make ends meet in the absence of my father. GPA for this year tanked to 5.9 but over the next two years I consistently raised it and eventually ended my final two semesters with 9.7 and 9.6 respectively. Also received a scholarship recognizing this increment in my GPA which covered my fees for both of my last semesters) Also, note that we have a notoriously tough grading system.

Scores:

Yet to give GMAT but based on mock tests, I am roughly around 720.

Awards and Scholarships:

Fee waiver scholarships for academic performance

A government scholarship for research students (Lost this scholarship for a year after the GPA drop that I mentioned above, recovered it the next year after an exceptional performance. Was also additionally awarded the above mentioned fee waiver after this recovery)

Fellowship for student entrepreneurial activities (pitched an idea which was selected for further development)

Internship Experiences:
All of my internships (4 total) have been research internships in tier 1 indian institutes. The topics I worked on were mostly mathematics with some applications to network science.

Have also attended 3 research conferences/workshops, one of which was primarily catered only towards PhD students with a few undergrad exceptions(i was lucky to be one of them)

Job Offer:
Have been offered a job in one of the Big4 in financial model risk management via campus placements. But, would prefer eventually working on my startup instead.

Target:
Any of the M7 (deferred)

Work Experience + Extra curriculars:

Founder, CEO of an emotional wellness platform (currently being used in our university and will soon expand to other sister institutes)

Following my father's rehabilitation and the loss of our primary source of income, I found it difficult to cope with life. All the additional pressure of providing a livelihood to my family, doing well with academics, and bringing my family out of generational debt pushed me into a clinical depression. I was on medication for a year and was consulting with a campus psychological counsellor throughout. After a failed self harm attempt, my friends and this counsellor really pushed me into focusing on recovery. I eventually got off meds and was able to thrive again thanks to such a strong support system. Around the same time, I lost a friend of mine to similar reasons. Relapsed back into the negative loop but eventually decided to do something myself about it. Under the guidance of counsellors, professors and a few deans, we developed an emotional support platform for university students. Took a lot of iterations, we are still currently refining it, but we have had heartwarming reception on campus. The product development cycle in itself has been a huge learning experience. At one point, we had to scrap 3 month's worth of effort after an underwhelming student response. Have learnt a lot over this last year and I wish to pursue this further. Also managed to raise funds which have given us a 6 month runway to keep working. The primary feature was motivated by one of my previous year's summer project work.

2) Founder, President of finance club

Upon joining I was in a terrible state in terms of finances due to low crop yields post covid. Had very little money to work with and found it very difficult manage. Got into reading about personal finance, explore career prospects in mathematical finance. Did a summer research internship in a similar topic. Realised that this field wasn't too heavily prioritized in my institute, so after a lengthy back and forth with admin and after convincing a few professors, started the club. Organized many events and the club is still thriving.

3) Delegate for a National Wellbeing Conclave hosted by the Indian Ministry of Education

Was appointed as our institute's delegate to a nation wide event organized for all major government colleges(IITs, NITs, etc) to promote student wellness initiatives and collaborations across universities.

4) Currently on the founding committee comprising campus representatives to start an emotional wellness student club on our campus to host broader events and organize awareness programs

5) Organized the institute's cultural festival(spread out across 4 months) leading a team of more than 50 students.

6) Volunteered with our university's social outreach program for underprivileged kids around campus

7) Was on the sponsorship committee for some other clubs

8) Attended some startup bootcamps

9) Worked as a freelance content writer during the pandemic while preparing for my entrance examinations to pay for my food and living expenses while staying alone since parents had to move back to the village. Managed to pay for myself for the year, also worked with an NGO to develop educational science content for underprivileged children.

10) Working with an NGO for cancer patients.

I HAVE NO FORMAL WORK EXPERIENCE IN COMPANIES as such which has been a big concern for me. Please do let me know if this could be a problem and what I could do about it.

Recommendation:
My supervising professor of more than 2 years. Knows me very well and is aware of my entire background and has also financially supported me through some tough times. Planning to request one of our business mentors as well.

Goals post MBA:
Pursue our startup further. Expand to other institutes and eventually nation wide. Regardless of what channel, I eventually want to work with any social enterprise that can allow me to impact any students/young adults that might be struggling. I was fortunate enough to have a strong support system; not everyone is.
Hi bananachtarski , I hope all is well!

Your profile looks strong, with a lot of personal growth and leadership experiences. Overcoming challenges like family issues and other health struggles while maintaining academic progress shows resilience. Your work with the emotional wellness platform and as president of the finance club highlights your leadership and problem-solving abilities. However, not having formal work experience in companies might be a drawback, especially for top schools. To improve this, consider gaining some formal work experience, like internships or projects, or show how your startup experience is similar to working in a company. A higher GMAT score of 720+ would be important to strengthen your profile. For recommendations, ask your professor and business mentors to highlight your leadership, resilience, and potential. Lastly, focus on how your background and goals align with the MBA program’s resources for social impact and entrepreneurship.

If you’d like, we are happy to discuss more about your leadership skills, impact created, challenges faced, awards and achievements and extracurriculars to assess your chances to top B-schools and strengthen your application with impactful stories.

Shouldn't be a problem.

Might need to understand more about your startups, mind if we shift that conversation to DM?

Hello Businessconquerer,

Deferred MBA is very competitive; a 720 on the GMAT will not be enough, especially, if you are targetting the M7; look at taking this up significantly.

All the best!

Hey bananachtarski , sure! You have a really good profile, you can consider applying to MIT, Wharton, Columbia Deferred MBA. But yes, increasing 10-20 points on GMAT will improve your chances drastically. That said, the MBA admissions process isn’t just about numbers or job titles, it’s about your story. Adcoms want to understand "who you are, why you’ve made the choices you’ve made, and what impact you want to create." How you convey your story, your aspirations, challenges, and personal growth will be very important.

Focus on crafting impactful essays, fine-tune your resume, and prepare for interviews that reflect the unique value you bring to their program.

Please feel free to take a look at this success story of a Deferred MBA candidate.

Hi there. What an inspiring story.
  • Stop thinking about a MBA. Maybe when you are 30, would be the best time for you. But if you do it now, there'd be many schools willing to take you on board. Just remember almost every school as a special seat for someone like you.
  • Go for what you have started. It is brilliant. Your life will take you where you need to be.

Do well, and god bless you.
