Background:
I am an engineer (technical) at a large energy company (think Exxon,Chevron). I have 4.5 years experience in mostly entry level engineering positions. If anyone has worked in energy, they understand that moving quickly through the ranks is very difficult (impossible with < 8-10 years experience). I am looking to pursue an MBA because I am looking for a career change and my career is becoming
too technical- I like focusing on big picture issues and helping to develop solutions to these underlying issues. I am not wanting to focus my career in energy, but would like to broaden my exposure/experience to a various industries (healthcare, consumer products, tech, food and beverage) and apply my technical "problem solving" capabilities in such industries.
Last year, I applied to 3 Bschools in Round 2. I got dinged at all 3 (all top 10 schools). My background (4.5 yrs WE, 750 GMAT, 3.5 GPA) seemed solid. My "Why MBA" essay/reasoning focused on my desire to use my technical problem solving approach to resolve issues within companies/organizations to improve process efficiencies. I ultimately want to get into consulting to get broad industry experience. After some thought and conversation with others, I think this may have resulted in my dings- I believe my reasoning too generic or can be played off as "you can do that without an MBA". Is my reason to pursue an MBA valid and good? Could my "Why MBA?" resulted in dings? Please let me know your thoughts.
