We have had a lot of success with EMBA applicants over time and this year seems to be an especially good year to apply. The EMBA class profile has changed dramatically in recent years, as fewer companies sponsor students, and so many candidates with strong work experience might suddenly find themselves as a viable applicant.
The post was prompted by recent "ding" letters sent out by Columbia that encouraged the rejected applicant to apply to the EMBA program ... even though they aren't executives and are under 30 years of age. It seems pretty clear that CBS is having a hard time filling that program with strong students and will consider anyone with some legit WE under his or her belt.
An EMBA path can be particularly attractive for the following groups of applicants:
- "Older" applicants (ie, will be 30 or older at matriculation)
- Sub-700 GMAT
- Dinged Rd 1, nervous about Rd 2 (or otherwise running out of options)
- Able to stay in current job and get Fridays and occasional weeks off
If you are getting worked by the process this year or are just at a bit of a crossroads, this could be a fantastic option for you. Word to the wise though: don't just slap something together and send it in. An EMBA application requires a totally different approach to career goals and overall positioning. We, of course, can definitely help as we've worked with the Sloan Fellows programs at MIT and Stanford and the EMBA programs at Wharton (both Penn campus and Wharton West), Columbia, Ross, UNC, Kellogg, NYU, Columbia, and quite a few others.
