Dissociative Behavioral Disorder (DBD) is caused by malfunctioning neurons that effectively ‘short-circuit’ specific areas of the human brain that control the individual’s awareness of socially-acceptable behaviors, leading to cognitive dysfunction. In a controlled experiment to see whether following a daily routine impacts DBD patients, the National Institute for Mental Health (NIMH) found that such individuals were less likely to suffer from episodes of cognitive dysfunction when they followed a stipulated daily routine.

Which of the following, if true, would it be most important to take into account in assessing the result?

A) The NIMH is renowned for its accomplishments in the field of mental health research.

B) Not all the participants in the study had the same daily routine.

C) A few participants dropped out of the study since it was difficult for them to follow a stipulated routine.

D) The prescribed medication taken by the participants in the experiment was the same as the medication taken by them prior to the experiment.

E) Cognitive dysfunction, unlike a few other symptoms of DBD, is treatable if the right medication is prescribed.

The question stem tells us to find the option that would be most important to take into account in assessing the result.
Ok! The Result is that individuals suffering from DBD were less likely to suffer from episodes of cognitive dysfunction when they followed a stipulated daily routine.
Pre-Thinking: Is it the result depends only on stipulated daily routine?
Only Choice D answer it well as it eliminates the possibility of change in medication before the experiment.
Answer Choice B is irrelevant here as the experiment is not talking about a universal stipulated routine. It is possible that experiment subjects might have a different stipulated routine yet the likelihood of episodes have decreased.

IMO D

Conclusion:following a daily routine impacts DBD patients, the National Institute for Mental Health (NIMH) found that such individuals were less likely to suffer from episodes of cognitive dysfunction when they followed a stipulated daily routine.
Prethink: whether the condition of the patients /environment/medication were the same as compared to before the experiment

A) The NIMH is renowned for its accomplishments in the field of mental health research.--irrelevant

B) Not all the participants in the study had the same daily routine.--weaken

C) A few participants dropped out of the study since it was difficult for them to follow a stipulated routine.-->weaken

D) The prescribed medication taken by the participants in the experiment was the same as the medication taken by them prior to the experiment.---correct

E) Cognitive dysfunction, unlike a few other symptoms of DBD, is treatable if the right medication is prescribed.---irrelevant

I am pretty sure that the answer here should be D. A new element was introduced into the DBD patients’ treatment, that of a stable routine. In order to properly asses the result of introducing this new element, it is important that the old elements be kept consistent. D is the only option that is relevant in this regard.
