i am a female from india. i did my undergrad in cornell universiry in electrical engineering. i graduated with a 2.9 gpa. i got placed on both disciplinary and academic probation at cornell.
i was not serious about school then. i have 6 years of work experience now along with a 740 score on the gmat and good recommendations. i am a team lead and a valuable resource to my company. i also did a Masters in Electrical engineering at the local university (too a top school but a good school). i have a 3.7 gpa in my graduate coursework. i took 5 years to complete it part-time. does this look bad that i took 5 years part-time?
i am worried about my past. does a disciplinary probation during your undergard mean that i can't get into any top 20 mba school?
with a 740, good recos and good work exp, can i overcome my past?
Your undergrad GPA and the disciplinary probation will definitely require explaining, and it would help if there are extenuating circumstances. It shouldn't, however, be an automatic ding given your subsequent performance, though it will take some convincing on your part. Taking 5 years to graduate from a part-time program is not all that unusual, and on the face of it isn't a negative. Your major challenge will be to articulate your goals and how and why an MBA will help you achieve them. That, along with demonstrating your maturity and dedication, should set the tone for your essays.
