Hi, I sat for my exam yesterday and scored a 680 (raw scores Q39, V42) and IR 8.
I have 6 years of work experience in Marketing - not the biggest brands but a varied profile - a 5month advertising internship with Ogilvy, Marketing Communications for an Engineering firm, Qualitative Market Research, my own Leadership Training startup (with my father), and currently I work for a media PR agency in Austin (Texas). I graduated from University of Delhi, India with a Bachelors in Business Studies (specialization in Marketing). I am not sure if the GMAT score is good enough for the top rung schools. I will prefer a Master's to an MBA though. Also I already live in the US and am on an L2 visa. Does the visa status add to/ take away anything from the profile?

Thanks for sharing your profile. I am assuming you were born and raised in India and in the US on a work visa. I think the visa piece is a positive because it confirms for the AdComm you're hireability as many US firms are reluctant to sponsor. So this will be seen as a positive not a negative. However if you are not competitive on paper then all of this is a moot point. Your GMAT is below the average score for the top rung which typically range from 705 - 725. With nothing in your profile that seems to stand out I would say you will have a tough time competing for a spot at the top rung of schools.

Thanks a lot for responding. You're right I was born and raised in India. Could I ask what is it that would stand out? I thought entrepreneurial experience counts. Also I have very strong communication skills and will be able to get decent recommendations too. But maybe I am thinking this the wrong way (or maybe I did not bring out my strengths to you in the post earlier). Just want to know what kind of stuff is considered "stand-out", because if I don't have that then I might just think of retaking the GMAT.

Entrepreneurial experience counts particularly if there are strong results or strong lessons learned from the experience. Top bschools are looking for exceptional candidates. So what may come across as good generally just the baseline for consideration particularly coming from a crowded pool. So I think it us to you to identify and share some stand out experiences and qualities. Why should the AdComm admit you over anyone else? What is your unique competitive advantage? Some times you need to think about this that simply, why me?

The devil is in the details so breakthrough experiences via the essay can really showcase this for some candidates. So don't be afraid to open up because every component of the application process is an opportunity to stand out. It's up to identify and execute from there!
