Hi,

I am looking to apply to some of the top 10 schools but am concerned that I took the GMAT 3 times. How do top 10 programs view retakes? My scores are below:

Attempt 1 Jan. : 610 (Q 47, V 27, IR 7)
Attempt 2 April: 560 cancelled score
Attempt 3 May: 730 (Q 49, V 41, IR 8)

Any insight will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

It doesn't matter. However, they have all excess to check your score as well as AWA(not canceled score). If you think that it is an obstacle to your application, cancel the first score also.

Hi Spandon,

In general, Business Schools do not care if you retake the GMAT. In your case, sending your 2 'live' Scores to a School might actually be beneficial - since it shows that you have the capacity to learn and then perform at a much higher level. Since you're ultimately asking Admissions questions, so you would likely find it beneficial to speak with an Admissions Expert about your overall profile and plans. There's a Forum full of those Experts here:

That's a great improvement in your GMAT score (V27 to V41 is just amazing). Your target programs will look at this positively.

Congratulations, and all the best for the applications process.

Hi Spandon,

You probably will get a variety of answers to your question. That said, since there is nothing you can do to change the two GMAT scores that will show on your official score report, I really would not worry about it. The good news is that 730 with Q49 is a really great score, my friend. So, just focus your time and energy on putting together a killer application and don’t look back :).

Feel free to reach out with further questions.

Would like to point out that the schools will not get to see your attempt 2 on your score card since you cancelled it, not even as a C (Cancel)
So as far as the schools are concerned, you have taken GMAT twice - a 610 in Jan and a 730 in May. Also, every section has seen improvement, especially Verbal in a relatively short span of time. If anything, the comparison is going to tilt the scales in your favour.
Rejoice! Your GMAT is not a matter of concern at all now. It ticks all the right boxes.
Focus on the rest of the application to seal the deal.
