Hi,
Surprisingly, I have relatively high CPA score- 95(99 on auditing etc.). And I wonder if it would help me get into any Accounting masters, and possibly Phd program. Any comment will be greatly appreciated !!!!
So this is my story.
I always considered myself not that smart. I graduated from mediocre state university with overall GPA less than 3 thanks to couple of academic probation. I recall my GPA after 2years of college being exactly 1.8. Obviously I didn't make to any of accounting firm when I graduated and settled for mid-sized company's AR employee.
I quit my job due to family issue after one year. When everything settled and when it was time for me to go back to my job, I realized that I don't want to work in that company because I didn't see future in it. SO I decided to study for CPA test. I studied pretty hard. And I found myself really get into studying for CPA material. I started barely making 40 hrs studying per week (keep in mind I didn't work) but eneded with 75+ hrs per week of NET studying time. I was so focused toward the end that I believe I spent probably less than 5~10 min per day daydreaming while on the desk over 10~12 hrs.
I was really really excited and happy while I was studying for CPA test. Now I don't want to stop here, I would really like to pursue master and phd if I can make it.
I really have no clue if I have any chance with my low GPA ( my Accounting courses are 3.8 or so because I took it after I came to my sense) , weak work experience etc.
As far as GMAT/ GRE score is concerned I think I can get 75+ percentile on MATH right now and "possibly" 85~90 percentile if I devote 2~3 months into it.
So my question is
1. How hard is it to get into masters in accountancy for say top 10 and then top 50~100.
2. I see that accounting masters programs are mostly one year program preparing you for CPA test and does not require you to write research paper. If I want to pursue Phd in accounting should I consider some other masters that focus on developing research skill? Or is there any specific master in accountcy program known for heavy on research instead of CPA prep?
3. I heard best way to get into phd program is 1. attend masters in a school where Phd is provided. 2. ask to enter Phd seminar class, get to know your faculty maybe participate in reserach and get good resume. Am I right?
4. I hear phd requires quant skill. Exactly how good should you be in math/stat? I graduated with finance as well, and I think I can pass CFA lv 1, do not have stat background, did ok with econ.
5. Is GRE GMAT interchangeable? I see GMAT is preferred for Masters, but how about Phd program? and what percentil is considered ok?
6. My CPA score from 2017, would it help me get any scholarship or especially TA position??
Thank you everyone!!!
