Each week, Jesse is paid x dollars per hour for the first 40 hours Each 5x dollars for each additional hour he works that week. How much did he earn last week?

(1) Last week, Jesse worked a total of 48 hours.
(2) Jesse earns $36 more when he works a total of 42 hours in a wo than when he works 40 hours.

Question: Eaning last week = ?

Statement 1: Last week, Jesse worked a total of 48 hours.
Total earning = 40x +8*(5x)
but since x is unknown hence
NOT SUFFICIENT

Statement 2: Jesse earns $36 more when he works a total of 42 hours in a week than when he works 40 hours.
i.e. 36 = 2*(5x)
i.e. x = 3.6
but we don;t know how many hours jesse worked last week hence
NOT SUFFICIENT

Combining the statements
Now we know x = 3.6 and we know his incomes last week = 40x +8*(5x) hence
SUFFICIENT

Answer: Option C

(1) Last week, Jesse worked a total of 48 hours.

In a week, Jesse is paid $x / hr for the first 40 hrs of work.
Then, for each additional work Jesse is paid $5x / hr.

Last week earning ...????

We need to know 1) the hours of work put by Jesse
2) the value of x.

STATEMENT 1:

(1) Last week, Jesse worked a total of 48 hours.

we know the numbers of hours Jesse worked. But not “x”. Hence, NOT SUFFICIENT.

STATEMENT 2:

(2) Jesse earns $36 more when he works a total of 42 hours in a wo than when he works 40 hours.

putting 40 hrs of work = $x is the amount Jesse earned in a week.

With 42 hrs of work = $x + 2*(5x) = $ 11x

given, $ 11x - $ x = 36
X = 3.6

we don’t know Hours. Hence, NOT SUFFICIENT.

COMBINING STATEMENTS 1 and 2 , we can calculate the earnings. X =3.6, hours 48
= $x + 8* ($5x) = 147.6

Hence Option C
