The parallel structure is "not ___ but ___". The inclusion or exclusion of adverbs (only, also, etc.) is based purely on context.

Hope it helps!

It does help... Indeed a great explanation by Ron in Manhattan thread...Thank you so much

Hi ArupRS,

You're welcome. I found it helpful to go through the official questions and then read Ron's explanations. They are all great. In case you're done with both free official CAT's, you can download and work on official questions. You can get'em here:

Ecosystem biodiversity loss is now greater than at any time in human history, a phenomenon that is explained not just because of climate change but by changes in land use.

A. a phenomenon that is explained not just because of climate change but by changes in land use
B. a phenomenon that is explained not just by climate change but also by changes in land use
C. a phenomenon that is to occur not just because of climate change but because of changes in land use also
D. which is occurring not just because the climate is changing but land use is also changing as well
E. which is occurring not just because of climate change but because land use is also changing

Should "not only....but also" come in a pair? As per my understanding, this is an idiom and must come together but sometimes I can see separate usage. Please explain.

use of 'which' refers to human history. So, eliminate D and E.
A) not just because .... but by --> not parallel
C) phenomenon that is to occur .... changes in land use also... --> incorrect
B is the way to go
