Hi pharaoh451,

I will try to post an additional response later today. But, I wanted to give you some quick good news. I worked with a medical doctor a few years back and he also had a 680. He got into every school he applied to with me - Harvard, Stanford, MIT, Columbia. The good news is that the 680 did not close doors for him - I was not surprised that that was the case, because like you he had great academic credentials and he also had been a practicing doctor for a while. The bad news is that when I worked with him, it was his third time applying, since he had failed to gain admission to those schools the first two times when he applied on his own. The take-away: yes, the 680 is likely sufficient for you to gain admission, but you have to have the whole rest of the application in great shape. That means great essays, great recs. Make sure to position yourself excellently through your essays and recommendations.

I can offer a few more insights later in the day hopefully!

Best wishes,

Interested in getting perspectives from those in the know about EMBA programs.

Full-time plastic surgeon in a group practice with 8 years of post-residency experience, 7 years of post-med school residency.
College and med school at top institutions
Undergrad GPA 3.93 Summa cum laude in electrical engineering/computer sciences
Phi Beta Kappa, Alpha Omega Alpha (Med school honor society)
Harvard surgical residency graduate
Medical director of a wound management center, marketing and management roles with private practice, medical device design entrepreneurial projects initiated with prototypes but no product delivered yet

Just took the GMAT with only about 10-15 hours of practice, underestimated the time crunch aspect of the quantitative section, which is my actual strongsuit, scoring a 680 (92%ile verbal but only 61%ile quant because I ran out of time  ). Pretty disappointed given that I took calculus as a junior in high school and got nearly every math problem correct in my limited practice testing ... there are times I think I would have really nailed this test in rapid speed at age 17, but I'm 40 now.

Extracurricular activities including volunteer surgical care, charity support, musical composition and performance.
Jeopardy! game show champion

Living and practicing in south Florida and looking at EMBA programs vs. PT programs; presently applying to EMBA's for entering class of Fall 2011 vs. waiting to submit for January 2012 start dates.

Looking at Kellogg in Miami, Columbia, UCLA EMBA, Duke (healthcare sector program), Mccombs, Wharton (not likely to be perfect fit for me but still considering). Already applied and dinged by Sloan (which was my original first choice because of prior Boston connections and interest in IT and biotech)

Goals for getting EMBA: entrepreneurship opportunities through networking, positioning myself for future healthcare biotech consulting and possible VC roles, marketing/general management of organizations for health care administration
Questions are these:
1. Any perspective on whether it is better to get my application complete in the next couple of weeks in advance of the deadline for Fall entry or wait to get in early application for January entry?
2. Thoughts on value of retaking GMAT to increase my quant score to something actually representative of my strong math skills? I'm the kind of person who used to compete in math competitions and can't stand getting math problems wrong. Not every program requires the GMAT anyway (e.g., Kellogg in Miami, where I have already interviewed). I took it because some (CBS for example) do require it.
3. Programs I should be considering or any other advice to position myself well to get in to a top program? I'm more interested in EMBA than PT MBA structures, because I like the idea of starting and finishing with a cohort and my work schedule is more suited to EMBA timelines.

Thanks a lot.
